Avocado on toast

On my days off I LOVE a breakfast of avocado on toast with feta at tomatoes.
Today I decided to log it and it’s 600 calories?!
I never have sausages or bacon or anything stereotypically ‘fatty’
Is this breakfast really that bad?!

It's not bad, but yes it does sound like a lot of calories. Avocados are very high in fat, so yes they'll be high in calories, but it's also what gives them their culinary versatility. They just have gotten a "health halo" in recent years because they were promoted as a healthier fat than some other sources like butter.
So you can see if you can reduce portions of avocado to cut the calories, or substitute other ingredients like the feta cheese. That's the beauty of weighing and logging, you can see where your calories are coming from and then make adjustments.13 -
Well, I often have avocado on toast with hummus and cucumber and it's 150ish calories.
If you aren't weighing that avocado, maybe you're entering a larger portion than you're eating? I use about 20-25 grams of avo for one slice of toast ( and then 15g hummus ) and that gives a reasonable amount of topping.
Do you use a food scale?5 -
Weigh the avocado on food scale WITHOUT the skin and pit. I eat a whole one and it is usually less than 100 grams for the entire avocado, which equals around 140-160 calories. On whole grain toast, total calories is around 300.6

It's time to do away with definitions like "good" and "bad" and "stereotypically fatty". They won't serve you well.
Avocado is a high calorie food. Depending on how much you use, it can pack on hundreds of calories to a meal. It is also nutritious and has a lot of healthy fats. But those calories are still calories and count the same as all the other ones.
It's impossible to know if your meal was 600 calories without knowing exactly the quantaties of everything in it. But a big price of bread, a hefty spread of avocado, and some feta? It certainly could be.15 -

Oh the poor, tiny, Haas avocado. Where I live our avocados can be 3 to 4 times the size of them.8 -
You logged 225g of avocado. That is a lot of avocado. Was that just the portion you ate, or did you weigh the whole thing including the skin and the pit?
If it was all edible avocado, and all that avocado fills you up and at the end of the day you hit your calorie goal and got enough protein too, it's fine. It's up to you whether using all those calories on avocado toast is good or bad. For me personally it wouldn't fill me up enough to be worth the calories and I'd probably struggle to stay under goal for the rest of the day, but everybody's different.5 -

Ya, I love avocado, but have never had 225 g as one serving. Also wondering if you logged the skin and pit.
I don't eat a whole avocado at one time. Yes, the remainder browns, but you can minimize this in various ways, and it's just the very top part that browns, and can be scraped off.4 -
Avocado freezes very well. I mash up a Haas avocado with some lemon juice and put half in a zip sandwich or snack bag, flatten it out to get air bubbles out, and seal. Can stack them in the freezer. Bring out about 20 minutes before you want to eat it and it will thaw fine at room temperature. You also can freeze larger amounts in any bag you want. I don't know how long it takes to thaw in the fridge, never tried it.
I can eat a whole Haas avocado by itself as a small meal, but I also like just half of one and have never been able to preserve the other half in the fridge successfully. The frozen avocado technique works great, I can eat the other half a week or two later if I want. They keep in the freezer for quite a while, weeks or months. If I find good avocados for a good price, I can stock up.
Recommendations are to not mix the avocado with anything but citrus juice before freezing, add other things after thawing.10 -
It's not bad, it's calorie-dense and high in fat but at least for me I feel more satisfied on days I eat avocado or other high fat foods like nuts and eggs! (i.e. same number of calories but I feel less hungry with higher fat, lower carb days.) So I think they're great for weight loss if they help you stay in your deficit!! Also so yummy! I weigh it without the pit and skin, the large hass avocado I ate this morning was 122 grams.1

I think the problem is that you are eating a green snotty substance on your toast7

Well there are the Florida or Carribean avocados and then there are Haas. Also there is a lot of other types of avocados. But most of us only see the Haas.
Dang I wish I lived in a place I could get those big of avocados, I hate spending $2 for a tiny Haas 😋😞0 -

I get 4 large Hass for $3.00 at my local store. they are cheap right now.1 -

Hass are perfect for single serving. I don't need a 3 lb avocado.5 -
Avacodos are 1.6 cals a gram vs butter at 9 cals.3

We have the Florida Avacodo here . Though to me, the Hass has more flavor.3 -
I'm eating avocado every day right now (because it's in season and we get them for free! from the family garden ) As long as I stay within my calorie count, it works for me. I mostly put it in my salads.3

Yup. We get avocados here (Panama) that are larger than your hand.
I'm always at a loss at how to log them though. The Florida Avocados are known as the "slimcado" because they have about 25% less calories than the Hass version. I am never sure which category my avocados fall under.

Sure, but no one is going to put 225 g of butter on toast, right?6 -

I'm not saying avocados that weigh 225 g don't exist; I'm saying 225 g would be an excessive serving size for toast for me.4 -
Avocado doesn't fill me for the calorie punch it gives. Feta typically has pretty high calorie..not as high as melting cheeses but still. So yes it could be really high in calories depending on how much you used. Healthy yes but also calories and fat are high with these items.0

That's two sticks, I can't imagine anyone doing that except maybe Paula Deen.10 -

Nope... but is a nice exchange for someone who might like a slightly buttery taste on toast.... get some fiber too. Monounsaturated Fats as well..kshama2001 wrote: »psychod787 wrote: »Avacodos are 1.6 cals a gram vs butter at 9 cals.

Hass are perfect for single serving. I don't need a 3 lb avocado.
Half a Hass is perfect for a single serving, IME.
Also, my understanding is that the giant Florida ones aren't as tasty.3 -
What is important is that you weigh what is actually going on the toast. The simplest way to do that is to weigh the toast without the avocado, then with. Then add the Feta and weigh again. But, geez find something worthwhile to spend the massive calories on.2

Yeah avocados and cheese can be high calorie, if it makes you feel satisfied you should enjoy it0

Your bread could be packing on a bunch of calories, too. Maybe find a lower calorie bread that you like so you don't have to skimp on the toppings.2

Florida avocado is delicious, imo. Not inferior in any way. And you can cut a slice, and double saran- wrap the rest to keep it from browning. It lasts for a few days in the fridge when ripe.0
