I have an underactive thyroid and lost weight fine just by counting calories and eating a balanced, well-rounded diet. I didn't pay any attention to gluten at all, but know I ate some along the way during weight loss, and certainly have in 4+ years of maintaining a healthy weight since.

Do you get negative symptoms when you eat gluten? (It's certainly possible to be both hypothyroid and gluten intolerant. It's also possible to be hypothyroid and have zero problems with gluten.)

Is your thyroid condition properly treated with medication?

    Have you read this thread?

    Best wishes!

IMU, not directly. Some thyroid conditions are autoimmune related. IMU, gluten intolerance may occur at higher incidence in people with autoimmune conditions. There's also a lot of weirdness, spread by advocacy web sites, that all hypothyroid people need to avoid certain foods, or that we can reverse our thyroid conditions by eating a special diet. That's mostly baseless.

    Why?

do you also have coeliac disease or gluten intolerance?
has a doctor or dietician advised you to do this?
Do you have a reason to think gluten is impacting on your health?

I am on thyroxine - eating gluten has never been a problem for me so I have not tried a gluten free diet.

No doctor or specialist has ever suggested I do so.

  • My doctor did recently suggest, according to latest research, but Tbh apart from the normal bloating that I’d get with simple carbs can’t say that iv noticed much difference In my thyoid condition. On thyroxin,,,good days bad days

that reminds me of this one guy, supposedly some sort of doctor, that was brought in to give a talk as part of the healthy living program at my job. He insisted that if I would just follow his plan, he could get me completely off my thryoid meds - even though I no longer have a thyroid...... :unamused:

    oh dear. :s

Good luck getting off thyroxine if you have no thyroid of your own. :D

I have half a thyroid (hemithyroidectomy in 2016) and could theoretically trial not taking thyroxine - but the specialist told me after my surgery it was better to take a small dose as thyroid is not like kidneys - where you can remove one and , the other one just takes over the job.

Your remaining thyroid would try to do so but ineffectively and you would get uneven spikes as it crashed and burned in the attempt (obviously that is a simplified layman's terms explanation)

Having maintained nicely on 75mcg day with minor adjustments depending on blood test results - have no intention of doing such a trial.

Oh gosh, that's worse than the doctor that my employer had hired. He only insisted that I should not get my heartrate up to more than 110 to promote weight loss. When I said my maxHR is 210 and my slow running and singing along to music HR is about 165-170 he told me I'll die if I continue doing that. He also decided I'm overweight based on the failed heating at the office and me wearing thick layers of clothing. Then decided I have 41% bodyfat based on such impedance thingy you hold in your hands. I'm fairly muscular, mind, but my breasts are indeed not muscle. Idiot!

edit: oops, found something that the profanity filter doesn't recognize and chose another word.
