Less Alcohol - JUNE 2020 - One Day at a Time

hey everyone, hope you all had a nice weekend. Mine was fairly uneventful. More struggles of trying to entertain my kids in the absence of any structured external activities! We have some families we are socializing with- but one was out of town and the other is in quarantine as they were exposed to the virus. Our little community is having a really crazy COVID outbreak now, the worst in our state. Restaurants have closed again and everyone is feeling sad and frustrated.
Anyway, we laid low at home but I did get out Sunday to ride my horse on the beach. Saturday night we got takeout Mexican food (I had crab enchiladas- YUM) and my husband picked up a bottle of tequila because we both had a strong desire for margaritas. I had two. And then a beer. But it was okay, we were having a nice time chatting and I was doing a puzzle, it felt like a vacation. Yesterday I was back to being alcohol free.
If you don't mind me asking, what state are you in? Sounds like you had a very enjoyable weekend!

Late getting in here today.
Been working 7 days a week, guess it caught up with me this morning because all I wanted to do was sit in my rocker and drink my coffee. My regular routine is to get on here and check in while rocking and sipping.
By the afternoon after work, I got my energy back and was able to kick it in gear and get things done around here. Thank goodness I did not come home and grab a drink. I would have crashed and burned.
Day 15 of June / 14 days AF

@shorepine
Sorry to hear about the COVID resurgence in your area : - (
There are a few places in Canada that opened way too soon, that are also having outbreaks.
We are really not wanting any tourists in our area after working so hard to get to zero. Some Provinces actually closed their borders on each side, or in the case of the Yukon closed to anyone coming in from the Southern regions. Haha, yes, Canada does have a South : - )4 -
I am Dawn. Turning 60 in September.
I live in SE BC, Canada.
I started on this thread November 28.18 - at that time I was having drinks every day. That first AF day was very hard! I vowed to have 1AF day per week to start, then progressed to 2AF days per week etc.
My goal now (that is working for me) is 16-20 AF days per month. I have been keeping within that since last October. I am comfortable and happy with that goal.
I have never ever been able to exceed 3 drinks or I throw up. There is moderation for you : - P
I log in here every day with a running calendar/journal of the month at a glance. It helps me.Monday June 01.20 - AFMonday June 15 - AF - My Tuesday jobs have now been cancelled for the remainder of June and July, I only will need to contend with working for that company on Thursdays now, still layed off from my other companies. Intending to work out lots, play in my garden lots. Perhaps I will have drinks Thursday night, we'll see. No plans to have drinks before that.
Tuesday June 02.20 - AF - Very long, very stupid day, my first back working for a company that I loathe. This is why i always designated Tuesdays as my drinks days in the past. However, I am coming toward the end of a 100 day weight challenge thread, and that is my motivation to stay "dry" for at least the next 5 days. In the previous round of it I lost 1.7 pounds in 100 days. Hoping to lose 2 pounds this time. (I know, painfully slow, but better than gaining, and it really does get more difficult to lose weight with aging.)
Wednesday June 03.20 - AF - Really wanted drinks after working hard in my yard. Didn't.
Thursday June 04.20 - AF - Ditto to yesterday, really really wanted a couple of drinks. I hate being back to work, and thought a couple of drinks tonight would relax me. Hanging tough to hopefully lose another 0.02 pounds over the next few days.
Friday June 05.20 - Having a couple of drinks. My last half hour digging and planting seeds was raining. I decided there and then that I would have a few drinks tonight. My weight was up 2 pounds today for no reason, so sacrificing having drinks really didn't appeal to me today. I have had my half a drink from my freezer lol, and have just poured a second. It is nice for me. Watching "Caribbean Life" on HGTV where they are always having yummy looking cocktails, and I am happy to not be white knuckling it resisting having some drinks today. All good : - )
Saturday June 06.20 - Hadn't planned on a drinks day, started out at a friend's place (who is a wine drinker) with water, and then caved. First time to have 2 drinks days in a row since the beginning of the pandemic. I will get back on track.
Sunday June 07.20 - AF - Feeling back on track, I think that I just wanted to be self-indulgent for a couple of days. Next planned drinks day is Wednesday or Thursday.
Monday June 08.20 - AF - Browsing holiday trips for my 60th, could be a pipe dream, who knows if travel will be possible in September. Watching too much HGTV (Caribbean Life, Bahamas Life, Mexico Life, Mediterranean Life, Beach Hunters etc.) and getting wanderlust.
Tuesday June 09.20 - AF - Had a horrible workday, as in every Tuesday now that I am working again for that one company (still layed off from the others at this point). This is why Tuesday were always my designated drinks day. Toughing it out, I will have drinks on a happier day...this week.
Wednesday June 10.20 - AF - Had an N/A beer on the porch, really did not do the trick. Had a good scale victory this morning though, so I am abstaining...today. Half way to my 16. No Mojito girl parties at my place just yet.
Thursday June 11.20 - 3 drinks - Started out on my porch. Very nice. Now to string together some more AF days.
Friday June 12.20 - AF - Got the lawn cut and more work done in the yard before the forecasted couple of days of rain. The sky was getting pretty dark by 6pm. Felt like having a drink after working hard, just didn't.
Saturday June 13.20 - 3 drinks. Not a planned drinks day. Brilliantly sunny with the threat of thunderstorms for 2 days in this region. At about 3pm the sun disappeared and the winds kicked up like crazy. I felt like having drinks on my covered front porch to watch it, but got dressed and went out in my car instead to do some shopping since it was no longer bathing suit weather. I delayed another 5 times after getting back home, but finally caved. I did not accomplish my 2 days in a row AF which I like to keep as my rule. Can't say that I didn't love having a Brandy on my porch with the wind howling and the skies swirling. That was hours ago. I should drink some water so that I feel okay tomorrow. Nothing important happening tomorrow except for some of my favourite shows on the radio and more forecasted storms. I am going to savour my morning coffee in my jammies : - ) (If the neighbours don't like seeing me on the porch in my jammies they can look away)
Sunday June 14 - AF - I had company this afternoon, coffee drinkers. Nice to know at least a few people who don't drink!
11AF days out of 15 days so far.4 -
Another beautiful morning, perfect clear blue sky as I look out on my lovely flower gardens.
I have friends in that live in Canada that can not get to their Summer home in my U.S.A. town this year. Sad but we all understand.
Although I am able to get to a few places(the patio pub for open mic) to try and have some normalcy once a week in my life, I certainly do not want another lock down and rise in c19 cases. Out of state license plates make me cringe. Right next to us (less than half a mile) is one of the states largest attractions and every year brings in people from every country in the world....
Being able to get out in this fresh air, enjoy gardening and take in some sunshine on the deck is pleasure enough for right now. It is the cooler weather, Fall and Winter that I have in the back of my mind. And that is why I am working now 7 days a week to prepare for that.
Think positive, enjoy the now.
Half way through the month, pushing for a strong finish.

Aye, think how we feel here in Vegas @MissMay it's like yes we depend(and welcome) people from allover the world yet right now it's scary and I'm shocked really that people are traveling that far, cases are going up and I don't want to shut down again, think AZ and FL have shut some things back down already 😔 6:14 am in Vegas another 24 💖 have a fab day peeps!6

@looneycatblue I am in a rural part of Oregon. We did everything right according to epidemiologists, closed fast before we had a lot of cases, case numbers have been pretty low statewide throughout the last few months. We reopened slow, in phases, and are still in phase 1. Gatherings are limited to 25 or less people in my area. Restaurants and bars are open but with very strict guidelines. But pretty much 2 weeks after the lockdown was eased a bit, cases have began to skyrocket despite everyone trying to be careful. In my town we went from a handful of cases to over 200 in one weekend, and people are starting to be hospitalized. 200 may not seem like a lot, but my town only has 9000 people so at this point everyone knows someone affected or in mandatory quarantine from exposure.
@whitpauly and @MissMay I live in a touristy area too (on the coast) so right now it is a love-hate relationship with tourists! We need them but it feels scary seeing people with out of state plates.5 -
And now, my less alcohol report! Things are going well for me. I have managed to keep a good attitude. I'm trying to consider my health first and foremost right now, and out of the entire last week I've only had one drinking day. Struggling a bit with parenting at the moment, my oldest son who is 7 is really bored and lonely and frankly I have run out of ideas of things we can do.

@shorepine here’s a quirky idea for your kid to make and use. I’ve used it outside AND inside for entertainment. Hang in there!!

The colored egg carton inside and out...although the magnifying glass could also be cool indoors 😁4

8 drinks/15 days...blew it yesterday after going to the docs -everything set the stage for a downfall - I showed up fasted, of course she ran late and I spent over an hour waiting in a room full of masked people with I myself trying to breathe. She tells me I need to have a hysterectomy rather quickly. Now is just not a great time! Then I had to get blood drawn after. Needless to say, on my way home my task was to pick up milk and still being fasted at 2pm with low blood sugar led me to wine and M&Ms....ugh*#!7

In AZ, they tell us hospitals are close to reaching capacity limits. Ugh. So far only seeing gyms and some restaurants shut down but only short term, for a day or two, for deep cleaning if an employee tests positive for Covid. We're in trouble because mask use is not mandatory in many places and just yesterday I think I was the only shopper with a mask on in the supermarket.5 -

Tuesday June 16 - AF - Begrudgingly. I made up a litre of Crystal lite "mojito" and drank the whole thing in frosted glasses, that only made me want "real" cocktails more. I ended the night with an NA beer. Really would have rathered to have drinks.

A few garden shots @MissMay It is a bit early in the season for a bunch of it, more photos at the end of July of my Peppers and tomatoes : - )
My Strawberry bed, and some silly ones growing out the bottom of it:
My Mint Tub just crying out for me to make some "real" Mojitos. Planning that for Friday.
My Potato Garden (some of my whirlygigs got pretty destroyed from the weekend storms)
My Hot Peppers at an early stage still. I will update when there are actual peppers on them, not hot enough at night yet here this year:
My Garlic bed with chives on one end, some dill and oregano at the other:
2 curls of the scapes and then they get trimmed. I do cook with the scapes. There is a booth at the Farmer's Market from a commune called Big Sky that sells jars of them in all different ways, like East Indian. Better than how I try to make them!
My Siberian and Music varieties seem to be doing the best.
Sort of an overview of part of what I have going on, it will look pretty different in a month or so:

@dawnbgethealthy those are incredible photos of your back yard grocery store. I am so impressed. All you have to do is walk out and pick your dinner. Labor of love and so much satisfaction and reward. And your glassware is lovely too.
@globalhiker I am very sorry to hear you have to have surgery. I would have done the same thing at the end of the day. Thinking of you.
There she is, @looneycatblue. How have you been?
Oh yeah @whitpauly you guys have the ultimate draw of world travelers in Vegas. I am hoping to be one of them when things get safer.
Well since @dawnbgethealthy put up garden pics , I will to.
Although mine are not of vegetables. Only flowers.

I am still here... been quiet lately, but still lurking I actually got 3 days AF in a row... that is a big deal for me right now. I poured a tall one last night, which was planned... and I didn't go back for more. Drank water after that. Feeling good this morning and proud of my control over the drink.
Got some very sad news last night, my 2nd Mom, Eileen, (she was my Mom's best friend), passed away yesterday. She would have been 98 in July. I have known her all of my life, she was part of the village that raised all of the children on our block. Now there is only one of the block's parents left, and she had to be put into a nursing home this past week. She has Alzheimer and due to the Covid situation, her children cannot visit her. They also can't tell her about Eileen, she wouldn't understand why she can't go to the funeral. I don't know yet how or if they will able to have a funeral with all that is going on.
So with this news, I would normally keep the drinks coming until I crawled into bed, and pass out. But I am trying my best to be more present, and let the feelings and thoughts come.
Your gardens are beautiful to look at, thank you for sharing these, it put a smile on my face.7 -
@Samand303 thanks for the idea! I like it! That could occupy us for a bit. We have done egg carton treasure boxes before but never tried painting the insides and trying to find colorful things. They might keep them busy for a bit.
@dawnbgethealthy your veggie garden is truly amazing. I am loving your mint bed! Looks delicious! I have some mojito mint plants but they are small and scraggly. I think I need to move them to a better spot. Thanks for the inspiration. Maybe I'll even do that today?
@MissMay now I want to post garden pictures too. I love your flowers! I focus on flowers myself in my garden. Trying to branch out this year to more veggies.
@globalhiker I am sorry about the news about needing surgery. Not a great time for that, that is for sure. I had to take my daughter in for an appointment yesterday and was not enjoying the sitting in the waiting room experience either.
I'm in a nice stretch of not drinking very much and feeling so good about that. I'm annoyed however that my body generally feels rundown and tired, though. I think it's because I am overweight. I haven't been doing well with losing weight, and I seem to be chowing down in the evening to make up for the lack of alcohol calories. I need to get a grip on that!

@looneycatblue I'm sorry for the bad news about your family friend. This time is so hard for older people, especially those in care facilities. I've been volunteering at a memory care facility here, bringing my horses. I walk around the building and let the residents look at the horses through the windows. It is so heartbreaking seeing them all inside, unable to receive visitors. They are so happy to see the horses though.
This experience has led my heart to just ache overall for all the people in care facilities who cannot see family.5 -
@globalhiker thank you for the wishes... I will need them tonight, and some inner strength not to dive into the bottle. I would be exhausted too if I did your workout! I took an hour walk this morning before heading off to work, this always helps my mental state. Hubby will be out tonight, so being alone, I think I should try and get another walk in when I get home to take my mind off the bottle. This usually does the trick.
@shorepine it is so wonderful of you to bring your horses out for them to see. I am sure they are so happy to see you and the horses, something to fill them with joy.5 -

You are right about wearing a mask, when in close proximity to another person these days is essential, and indoors a must. I still have one client that will not let anyone in their home...not even their own relatives that live in the same town. They will meet with them in their drive way at a distance. Sorry your husband is being that way, must make it difficult to be on the same healthy page. And still you checkmin with another 24 AF in Vegas. Your amazing.

Thursday already, how is that possible? All I know is I plan to stick to my June goal of much fewer drinks than May and April.
13 more days/nights to accomplish that.
Day 17 of June / 16AF8 -
@MissMay thank you for your kindness... I took a long walk in the morning and evening yesterday, I needed this time to think about the ones we have lost. As we get older (turning 62 this Oct), the losses seem to be adding up so much more quickly. I truly wish that I had recorded some of their stories, there were so many tales to tell.
I stayed true to myself, and let the feeling and thoughts flow without any spirits to soften them. I am doing fine now, just feeling a bit melancholy.6 -
Hello everyone. I feel as if once again, I didn't get enough sleep last night. I've been staying up way too late the last few months. I've just been reading or writing, and unwinding after putting my kids to bed.
I think I need to focus on getting to bed earlier, and seeing if that helps my general energy levels!

It helps me.Monday June 01.20 - AFWednesday June 17 - AF - Delayed and delayed, had an NA beer on the porch.
Monday June 15 - AF - My Tuesday jobs have now been cancelled for the remainder of June and July, I only will need to contend with working for that company on Thursdays now, still layed off from my other companies. Intending to work out lots, play in my garden lots. Perhaps I will have drinks Thursday night, we'll see. No plans to have drinks before that.
Tuesday June 16 - AF - Begrudgingly. I made up a litre of Crystal lite "mojito" and drank the whole thing in frosted glasses, that only made me want "real" cocktails more. I ended the night with an NA beer. Really would have rathered to have drinks.
Thursday June 18 - AF - Planning on drinks tomorrow, so as much as I felt like having a couple tonight after a long gruelling day, I didn't. I can wait a day.
14AF days out of 18 days so far.5 -
What a beautiful flower garden @MissMay Very zen like. Great job!
Btw, my favourite YouTube fitness that I do pretty much every day is Fitness Marshall. They are current pop songs, most of which I was unfamiliar with until doing the dances (I had heard the names of the people, just hadn't heard any of their music). Great workout. Some days if I am in a hurry I will do just a few songs to wake me up, lubricate the joints, and get some oxygen to my brain before work. On days off I do many more. I like that it is individual songs, 3 1/2 to 4 minutes, and then on to the next one, so it is always fun for me.
I stopped doing Beach Body once I understood that my Blu-Ray player gave me YouTube, and that I didn't need my hundreds of DVDs and VHS tapes. I really used to like Hip-Hop Abs, one of the Beach Body series. I have not put a DVD in for almost a year.5
