Link my Apple Watch ?

Will MFP automatically pull satay from my watch ? Or if I do any exercises do I have to enter it manually. It looks like it’s counting my steps but nothing else

If I remember correctly, I had to link my Health app from my phone to this site and then it pulled my workouts I logged on my watch into this site.0

I'm trying to remember. I did it at Christmas (when Santa brought my watch).
In the Health app, go to your initials in the top right corner. Click on that. Under "Privacy", there's an "Apps" option. Open that. I think I added MFP in there, but I don't remember how and I can't now because it's already linked...

You do not want to link it directly. There is a known bug. Link it through an app called Pacer. The free app version works just fine.1

You will not get credit for any Moving calories, that level of activity above sedentary.
Have goal for 20K steps a day outside of exercise - you won't get credit for it.
Obviously your body will burn the calories and you'll start getting some negative effects if decent enough numbers.
Your exercise calories won't really increase with MFP what you burned in the day to calculate with.
you'll get no credit for them.
So the more you do daily and in exercise, the bigger the deficit becomes.
Which is exactly *kitten*-backwards to doing this healthy.2 -

Then you really need to know the correct amount of exercise calories you earn. If you are earning a pretty small amount like 100 calories per day it should not be a big deal to ignore them. If you allowed MFP to set your goal without exercise in mind and you earn much more it will likely wreck your energy and/or compel you to eat everything in sight. From my personal experience it won't happen day 1 but it will eventually catch up with you.2 -

I’ll have to keep a close eye on it. Maybe it’s something they can fix. I’m not working out a lot right now. Working on my eating habits first. And doing small work outs here and there. Today was my first one logging with MFP and it’s correct so far.1 -

Yes I know you are new to it. Hence the explanations and trying to keep it simple since you haven't used the system before, and would not understand the details I could get in to.

We do know what we are talking about.
You don't understand how it all works - but you claim it's working fine for now or they'll fix it if really an issue.

I was hoping they would fix it too. So far a year has gone by.
My experience of having it synced directly was that it brought over the correct number of steps but that is all it did correctly. The calorie amounts were off by a LARGE percentage.
My wife also synced directly and experiences the same,
It is not actually a bug. A bug happens sometimes. This is a fundamental flaw that happens across the board.
Be careful. A lot of people when they begin are worried about losing too slow. They should be worried about misery. Misery is a weight loss killer. It is not how fast you lose the next pound but how easily that really matters.1 -

It was a simple question. I hear what your all saying there’s an issue. Wut I’m saying is so far I haven’t seen one. And when then is then I’ll figure it out. It wasn’t that serious.

I understand what your saying like I said before. Of course people can disagree but when you say it in a manner that seems snippy that’s not right. Wether I’m new or not. “If I choose to do it wrong” that’s why I was asking. The response could have come off more supportive then stand offish and brass. I was going to ask another question and decided not too cause god forbid a new person try to understand to make changes for the better for them selves. So here's a tool (MFP) that you are trusting for whatever reason to give an eating goal.
That tool then is synced with another tool (a tracker), and proceeds to change your eating goal.
Now you don't trust it for some reason.
MFP is trying to teach a life lesson about weight control.
You do more, you eat more.
You do less, you eat less. That's normally the kicker.
In a diet, a reasonable amount less in EITHER case.
Now maybe your workouts aren't much right now anyway so not missing out on much, but it sounded like a philosophy of eating that would continue even if workouts were substantial (you hadn't mentioned they were small at that point) - That would increase your deficit, and in a sustained manner that almost always ends up causing negative effects.
As many of us have seen, was your base activity level correct in the first place?
Many select sedentary when their whole weekly life actually isn't, only a desk job is. Therefore they have bigger deficit than perhaps reasonable already.
Many select the fastest weight loss goal even when it's not reasonable - not realizing the negatives.
When you pile on purposely increasing your deficit by not accounting for the fact you burned more in exercise - many of us see the negatives immediately.
And then finally - the way Apple screwed up with what they send to MFP (no one said they don't sync BTW, we always said they don't send the correct info, the fact you got something doesn't mean it's correct)
causes a worse effect because workouts may be listed - but they are also subtracted in a way that causes them to not actually count.
And your daily Move calories above sedentary (your steps) also don't account for anything because it's not sent.
So what is supposed to be MFP correcting itself to better estimate doesn't happen.
If you enjoy math and want to learn what Apple screws up, and want to take some screen shots of your Exercise diary and details - then that can happen.
But you dismissed the info as if you knew - and we knew full well you could not possibly know. Shoot, people using it for awhile don't even pickup on the mistake until they look fully and wonder.2 -

Well thank you for explaining it better. I un synced my watch. What was confusing was that it was right when I did my 30 mins the other day.

Apple sends to MFP though a figure equal to a sedentary burn rate, includes no Moving or Exercise calories it logs.
Totally sets MFP for doing wrong math.
And then proceeds to send workouts though.
For MFP to not double-count workouts it already knows about that should already be in the TDEE figure - it subtracts them from the synced TDEE figure.
Except in the case of Apple - they aren't actually there.
So now you can avoid that whole mess.1 -

Apple to Pacer to MFP will pull your correct Calories expended.
This allows MFP to adjust your eating goal based on what your watch estimates as your burn as opposed to the arbitrary amount you initially told MFP you were going to burn (i.e. actual as opposed to sedentary calories).
Apply to Pacer to MFP will NOT pull the actual workouts to show on your MFP feed.
Unfortunately any non manual method that pulls the actual workouts over will result in the wrong calculation.
And any manual method that will pull the actual workouts over is non trivial and not worth the hassle as it would involve playing with workout times and Calories just in order to display the workout in your feed.0 -

Hi please could anyone help, I too had linked my apple watch directly to MFP after reading above followed instructions linking Pacer to Apple Health and MFP - all seemed to link fine. However, it looks like MFP is still linking the exercise calories directly from my apple watch not Pacer, how do I unsync my apple watch - it isn't showing in MFP's apps and devices. Hope that makes sense. Thanks0
