Less Alcohol - JULY 2020 - One Day at a Time

Sorry about your lillies @MissMay
So much work and love put into the garden.
The food portion of my garden (my backyard) is fenced now. The one exception is a long planter that I keep on my my front porch railing with hot peppers in it. I had it in the same spot for 14 years and the Deer never touched it, but last year they tried them, then came back repeatedly and ate them all!! I hope that they had painful poops the *kitten*.
Ours are Town Deer born and raised.

"Less Alcohol - MORE PETS"
Love the pet photos. Oh my gosh, I have super cat allergies. So that is why I am a canine owner. BUT everyones cats are so darn adorable. That side photo of Denver is precious with the front paws sticking out below, like a kitty yoga move!
Thanks for the tips on how to keep the deer from destroying my gardens. There, as we know, is only one way to get rid of them. That will come this Fall with bow hunting from a group of friends that hunt. If I could put out deer contraceptives I would, or perhaps give them some of that wine that pairs well with venison as @forestdweller1 mentioned and then while they are passed out have them relocated to another state. It was cute at fisrt four years ago when I had my first sighting in 12 years since owning this property. Then, each year it has doubled or tripled many of them having twins or even three fawns. I have close to 5 acres, so fences are not an option.
July 7th AF4 -
0 drinks/7 days.....I used to have a nice forested lot without any fencing and experienced the elk herds in my yard. I think they slept there at night. They used to keep the property nicely manicured since they ate most everything but the pine trees and one rosemary bush. The downside was the endless POOP....I don't miss that!2

@FeelinFooFoo ....Catpuccino is a butterfly tabby, colored like black coffee with some cream swirled in, and a dusting of cinnamon on top...hence, the name. Agree with those who say cats are continually plotting our demise, all the while charming us. Beware the stairs before coffee.
REALLY, @MissMay ?? Marinating the deer BEFORE harvesting ?? Interesting concept.
Fencing to deter deer ?? Not likely. They have cleared my 5 foot wooden front gate from a dead stop. They can levitate.
Finished the second half of the wine last night, so I'm done for the week. For July at least, I've got a handle on this moderation stuff. Feels great, DECIDING whether to drink or not.5 -
Hello! I'm enjoying the kitty pictures! We have some cats too. One housecat and two barn cats. The housecat definitely has stolen a piece of my heart. She's just a kitten, 8 months of age. Technically she is my 5 year old daughter's cat but she sleeps next to me and my husband often. I love purring lap cats. Even if they are plotting my demise while purring.
I've been waking up feeling pretty good lately. One major change is that I've been committed to daily yoga or stretching. It makes such a difference in how my physical body feels! I like to do it first thing in the AM. After coffee (I'm not THAT much of a gogetter).
We just found out that we may have been exposed to covid on Saturday. We went to dinner at a friends' house- the one family that we have been still seeing for the sake of sanity, and their son just tested presumptive positive. No one has any symptoms, he went to get an outpatient procedure this week and so had to get a test. As a result, we now have been instructed to self-isolate. I'm trying not to panic. the son is getting another test today, since the first one wasn't 100% a sure positive. I have fingers, toes, everything crossed that it comes back negative. Deep breaths. We have to self isolate until we hear for sure how his second test went. If it comes back positive, my family will all be getting tested.

This has been a really stressful couple of weeks, but y'all are cracking me up big time! THANK YOU!!! (And sending positive vibes your way, @shorepine! Seems the tests are sure iffy--hope it's a false one)
@Pogostickers That's awesome and must have made a world of difference in your relationship/life.
@feelinfoofoo Denver is an apropos name for a cat that plots from ahigh...
@shorepine The Plotting Purrer--doesn't that sound like a purrrrfect name for a band?
@dawnbgethealthy Maybe this herd jumped over the great Wall from Mexico?

So I'm prepping for a sigmoidoscopy tomorrow morning. When I had my colonoscopy a few years ago, I used "drink only clear liquids" as an excuse for a bottle of wine. Maybe it was even more than a bottle. After all, this is not fun stuff and I wanted something to make it a little more pleasant. Still not fun stuff, but for all I know, all that wine is what has made my colon not so happy in the first place, so I'm drinking my Squirt soft drink and just going to watch some true crime and read Mrs. D is going Without for fun (in between bathroom breaks, lol).
Oh, and after rereading this post, I realize I unintentionally made a gross pun with my beverage choice--sorry--but it's really true!
10 -
@shorepine i hope your test is negative! Fingers crossed and prayers sent.
@mainelylisa good luck tomorrow! The prep is the worst!
Another AF day! 5/8 so far but I’m still making up for how many drinks I had on July 4!8 -
As you could guess from my handle, I have a thing with wine. I felt totally in control until Covid, and went off the rails. I bought some wine glasses that I got today, they have hash marks for 2, 4, 6 and 8 ozs and a calories count for each. 4oz is 100 cals. For the first night in months, I stopped at that. The glass was a simple pattern interrupt from my normal favorite glass.8

Cat and plants. And my apologies ahead of time if they post sideways2

Never mind plants2

@shorepine Stupid COVID. So ready for it to be gone. Learned this week my mom, step-dad, sister, bro-n-law and 2 nieces are positive and they are now experiencing symptoms. Wish I could help them somehow, especially my folks who are 81 and 93 y.o. Sure hope your family tests negative. 🙏please keep us posted.8
-
@shorepine yes our fingers are definitely crossed for good news.
@mainelylisa love your sense of humor with the soda can. Lol.
Good luck for your procedure.
@Tesha231 that is horrible news to have that many of your family members infected. Stay healthy.6 -
Yes @forestdweller1 basting them from the inside.....outward. Extra tender that way. Give kitty a pat on head from me.
Sorry @Samand303 your pics did not attach. This site can be tricky some days. No problem if they load sideways, we can still see them.
@globalhiker Holy smokes ELK!! If their poopie is like a moose then I know what you mean, I have been around alot of moose and certainly don't want them wandering through my yard to graze.
@womona, sorry your still having a hard time getting back to normal from July 4th. ❤
Welcome @nowine4me, I love that your new wine glasses are marked and that kept you accountable so you did not over pour. GREAT JOB!
Ohhhhh and @mainelylisa that deer cartoon is "dead" on. Love it. (How ya like that pun?) If you could, send that cartoon to my phone I can not copy the image off here.
July 8th AF
Have a wonderful day all.5 -
0 drinks/8 days....prayers and wishes for good outcomes, @Tesha231 and @shorepine.......!
Seriously difficult times. We can choose to stay strong, look out for our loved ones, be vigilant and keep ourselves as healthy as possible....I hang onto this thought and it helps me

We really can't get complacent with the Covid.6

Hi. I am Dawn. Turning 60 in September.
I live in SE BC, Canada.
I started on this thread November 28.18 - at that time I was having drinks every day. That first AF day was very hard! I vowed to have 1AF day per week to start, then progressed to 2AF days per week etc.
My goal now (that is working for me) is 16-20 AF days per month. I have been keeping within that since last October. I am comfortable and happy with that goal. If I exceed that, then great.
I have never ever been able to exceed 3 drinks or I throw up. Moderation is thrust upon me.
Wednesday July 01 - AF - Happy Canada Day.
Thursday July 02 - AF - Super long day at work. I kept thinking about having drinks tonight if I could ever get through the day. I used the delay tactic when I finally did arrive home so hungry and tired. I'm sure tomorrow will be better for having abstained.
Friday July 03 - AF - Scheduled Mojitos with a gf tomorrow after garage Sale-ing and the farmer's market. Would have liked to have a couple today after being up a ladder painting in the hot sun, but saving it up.
Saturday July 04 - Mojitos and stuff.
Sunday July 05 - AF - Felt like having drinks though.
Monday July 06 - AF - I might have drinks at band practice tomorrow, we'll see.
Tuesday July 07 - AF - I was going to have drinks if the guys were drinking beer at practice, but they drank water today, my super water : - )
Wednesday July 08 - 3 drinks. I have been trying to not have drinks unless I am happy and celebrating, or on a nice sunny day when I have spent many hours working in my yard. Now that I am back to working long stupid days my will power just went out the window. I didn't get home until 10pm and hadn't eaten since the morning. I was hungry, tired, stressed. The first sip of a drink felt really nice.
Rolling total: 6AF days out of 8 days.6 -
@Doxmum
I can't find that link to the doctor in Texas telling it like it is. Could you repost it please?
I did read it all of the way through, I would like to share it.1 -
Hey everyone! Good news, our friends' second test came back negative. Whew. But yeah, @dawnbgethealthy you are right, we can't get complacent. I think the mental exercise in preparation for quarantine again I went through yesterday was good for me- a reminder to continue to be vigilant. We have been pretty careful and I think our risk is low right now. We are only seeing one other family socially and our lives are home-based at this point, but we have just began branching out more. Monday's night out in a restaurant was our first. I keep thinking about that meal when I was stressed yesterday, wondering if it was worth the risk.
@Tesha231 I am so sorry about your family's positive tests. I hope they recover quickly and don't have too severe of a case. I often worry about my dad and my inlaws, too, they are all in their 70s and vulnerable.
Anyway- I didn't drink yesterday despite being a little worried, so I'm proud of myself for that.

@shorepine I am so relieved the test came back negative! Woot!
So far nausea, dizziness and fatigue for most of my fams. Grateful no respiratory issues at this point as I would not expect a good outcome for my folks who have vulnerability in that respect. Thanks all for all the warm words and wishes.
@dawnbgethealthy It only took one surprise visitor from out of state to infect 3 households. Unintentional, of course, but a good reminder for us all to be intentional in our actions in the COVID arena as well as other actions we take on the daily. Be careful out there!5 -

Thursday July 09 - Another late night getting home, I didn't finish dinner until 11:30. I worked for Foster Grant today, and they require us to wear masks and gloves when servicing stores. Not comfortable. I peeled the mask and gloves off outside the store into a garbage bin, really thinking about having a drink when I got home. I could too easily slip back into daily drinks after work, I will have to work at not doing that.

And did those 3 households unintentionally infect others? That is the sneakiness of this virus, no symptoms for up to 2 weeks. Such a super spreader.
I am close to the border and most of my friends live in North Idaho. Although I miss them so much (and the kayaking trips we take out of Bonner's Ferry especially), I am really glad that the US/Canada border is closed. It is just rampant in the USA and seems like every day gets worse. Terrifying.4 -
0 drinks/9 days....our AZ governor told us now is the time to stay home and watch Netflix. Situation here is deteriorating, now hearing patients are being moved to San Diego and Vegas hospital from southern AZ because the hospitals are out of room. Our situation is particularly challenging because the governor is not shutting our borders (ugh) so all American tourists with their RVs can come right in - and - we have a large elderly retiree population -and- we have a large Mexican undocumented worker population - and - we have a serious diabetes pandemic with our American Indian tribes-and renegade freedom fighters still stuck on not wearing masks.
Wish I was in Canada!12 -

@dawnbgethealthy Fortunately, not. The carrier displayed symptoms the day after the visit and got tested. They have all been quarantined since that day. Otherwise, I'd likely be in quarantine too. Actually, I still have 3 days left of my self-prescribed quarantine after flying back from Florida 11 days ago.7 -
Good morning ! Tonight is my birthday dinner with friends. Last year at this dinner, I got so drunk. I ended the evening crying so hard, making a spectacle of myself AND telling two of my friends exactly what I think of them.
This year, I will be abstaining. I want to start my 51st year of life, happy, clear headed and have no hangover. It seems that even two glasses of wine can cause nausea and fatigue the next day. I am promising myself a bike ride along a river tomorrow morning as a reward.10 -

I'm so sorry for your family. That is terrible.3 -
Happy Birthday @RubyRed427 !! I'll be singing to YOU as I wash my hands today.
So sad that the virus is affecting so many of our [not so little] community here. May the best outcomes happen for all.5 -
Middle Daughter has been remote working since this "kitten" started, but now it's back to the germ pool for all. Face masks are mandatory [NOT DONE] and "social distancing" is [SO NOT] followed. Plus the random surrounding of the government building where she works by screaming protesters. She now knows 6 different ways to get out of the building, including a little known and supposedly closed underground tunnel to another building. Ssshhhh !! Her DH is immune compromised [no, not AIDs] but she has lost her pleas to keep working from home. She goes to work each day, and literally hides in unused rooms to do her job. It's all on line anyway. She has been "caught" a few times by upper level management who pop into the rooms she's hiding in....but they just laugh and shake their heads. She's a long time employee, and already has a rep as eccentric, so....
115 more days til Our Feckless Leader is hopefully ousted. If not, my count will be reset back to 1460. Patience. I can wait til 78. Less alcohol while I wait.10 -
Hello, and happy birthday @RubyRed427 ! Your last year's birthday dinner sounds painful, I'm sorry, but now here is a new chance to make a new birthday memory that will be much better! The promise of a bike ride tomorrow is a good one, and starting a new year with a clear head. You can do it!
@globalhiker I wish I lived in Canada too. This crisis has just highlighted in extreme ways all of the major issues we have in our country. The situation in AZ does sound dire. I have family in AZ and they have been reporting the same thing. Do you think schools will open there? My brother told me the plan is still for them to start in August. Seems crazy. We have the renegade non-mask wearing people too in Oregon. Our governor declared a statewide mask requirement last week and so far it seems most people are adhering to it, only our borders are open too and tourists flooding in as if nothing is happening. There are always a few idiot dudes in every store wearing their masks blatantly around their necks swaggering around, waiting for someone to tell them to put their masks over their mouth/nose so they can start hollering about their freedoms. I hate to say it but I hope that they get the coronavirus. There I said it.
My week is going well so far. I have been exercising and avoiding alcohol.
