I thought you could scan items on this app.

I do often. But I also check the weight of said food, as prepackaged items are not always exact.1

You can scan the barcode. Foods without barcodes (fresh produce not sold prepackaged) can’t be scanned, obviously!
When entering foods in your diary, look to the right of the search box - you’ll see a little barcode icon. Hit that and your phone camera should activate. Line up the barcode within the marked field and once the barcode is recognised the item *should* come up.
Be aware that sometimes barcodes have been reassigned to a totally different product so it pays to sanity check the results!2 -
You can... usually. Aside from the problems mentioned above, sometimes it just flat-out doesn't work at all. Sometimes you can just input the barcode number, but that doesn't always work either.0
