It baffles me how...

No amount of exercise will fix a bad diet. It is impossible to burn off excess calories if you are eating crap all day. If you want to exercise for health benefits, you need to pair it with a healthy diet. There is no substitute for good nutrition.
I eat a "bad" diet.0 -
For some reason, something Matthew McConaughey said in an interview stuck with me--perhaps because he looks so ridiculously awesome. Now he clearly works out, but he said that he's realized as he's getting older that it's really about diet more than exercise. I totally think this is true. I was working out and eating what I considered to be healthy for years, but I certainly wasn't losing any weight. Now, I'm exercising lightly/barely and being really careful about what I eat, and it's been easy so far. (Well, as easy as it is to skip the most delicious pizza buffet ever for the past month or so!)0

If you are somehow able to do nothing but eat one large piece of chocolate cake every day, you will lose weight. And hair. And skin tone. And, if you do it for long enough, vital signs.
No one is saying it's a good idea, just that it's possible.0 -
You are 18. Enjoy it while you can. Yes there are some people who think they are doing everything right but are really eating way too much, but there is also a real slowdown in metabolism as you age. Some medical conditions and medications can also make it make it harder.0
-
Its metabolism. My hubby can get a stomach bug and lose 10+ lbs in a week or less. I lose weight every time i have a week where i dont work out or eat at least 2500 calories.
My dad, on the other hand, can work out for hours a day and eat just below his TDEE for weeks and only lose a pound.

I'm pretty sure I screwed up my metabolism during my active years of an ED.0

I think 23lbs is actually pretty good. o:
See, I didn't know metabolisms could adjust to constantly having different things thrown at them.
Your metabolic rate slows a little when you're in calorie deficit. In fact, if you look at another thread on this site, there seems to be a lot of studies that even when you reach goal weight, your TDEE will be 10-15% lower than someone who was naturally that weight to start with.
The thing is that everyone is different. With me I've simply found 2 big things seem to stall weight loss in me:
1. Bad sleep. I've been an insomniac all my life and in weeks where I've had really poor sleep I don't lose weight.
2. If I keep doing the same things - eating the same number of calories every day, doing the same exercises - then my body seems to get used to it and weight loss becomes incredibly slow. Shake things up a little; different calorie limits a day (but still in a deficit weekly) and/or different exercise then I start losing again.0 -
some people work so hard to lose the weight. They might exercise 6-7 days a week and be doing everything right and STILL not losing.
Then, there are people like me, who don't exercise at all, eyeball all their portions, go over calories nearly every day... And lose like it's nothing.
What's the deal there?
You're bragging? That's what it seems like to me. Oh did you mean about the situation or just in your post?0 -
People have different metabolic rates. You've heard of high metabolism and slow metabolism, right? It's not just a figure of speech, it really exists.0

M guess is you are very young- age is a great way to determine how fast you will lose weight - I always check the age of the folks who lose a lot of weight fast - it is either young women or men.
The first time you lose those 20 pounds it will come off a lot easier than the third time you lose them after having 4 kids and being over 40. And when I say it will be a lot harder- you have no idea how much harder. Do yourself a favor, be grateful and be courteous to those who struggle- it might be you one day.0 -

Original Poster, I know EXACTLY what you mean. I don't understand why it is so hard for people - as soon as I started tracking my intake and making better choices, the weight literally couldn't come off fast enough.
I exercised while I lost weight, but this time I around I didn't do it for weight loss. I did it because it felt good and because now I could finally see the muscles I built!0 -
BTW I'm 38 - not exactly a spring chicken.0

-OP's 3rd or 4th time on MFP trying to lose weight.
-Makes post about easy it is to lose weight and wonders why everyone else is having problems with it.
:drinker:0 -
Watch "Secret Eaters" out of Britain and it will explain it all.
You can watch the episodes on youtube.
Someone on MFP mentioned it last month and I have seen all 15 episodes.
Oh thank you for sharing. It is very interesting0 -

HAAHHAHHAHHAAHAHHAAH0 -
I'm not baffled.
Obviously those that aren't losing aren't working out as much as they think or are not watching calories as close as they assume.0 -
Probably because the process has enough variables that any one of them could throw it out of whack without being noticed.0
-
Or maybe they have some type of medical condition preventing the weight lose. Why must we all judge?
There's no medical condition that prevents weight loss. There are medical factors that need to be taken into consideration when calculating how much your body needs and how much it uses, but if you provide less energy than the body needs to sustain your weight, you will lose weight. It's really that simple.0 -
There really are so many different factors. I was quiet a bit underweight and and never had to diet (also ate crap and drank crap) until I was 34 or 35. Then little by little things changed and the weight started to creep on. Probably a little bit of everything. Not as much time to work out, hormones, age etc. I just joined MFP again this week and I am hopeful that I can get rid of the 20-25lbs that would make me feel comfortable but I just dont know yet if its going to work for me. OP your post really isnt very encouraging.0

Some of us aspire to be strong and have muscle tone.
If you don't, so be it. And count yourself lucky that your genetics allow you to lose weight easily. Not everyone is so blessed.0
