How do you find motivation when its cold outside to go Gym?

idk, it's room temp inside the gym so the weather outside doesn't really affect my indoor exercise. and i can put the heat on in my car on the way there... the 30ish second walk from the car to the gym and back isn't really a deal breaker for me. if i didn't feel like going to the gym just because it's cold out then i probably would never go to work, or grocery shopping, or out with my friends, or anything else that involves being outdoors for short periods of time during the winter... i guess i just don't have that issue.
i did c25k in 26-degree weather this afternoon and walked a little longer afterward. i actually broke a sweat. granted, when i continued walking afterward, my ears and nose felt like they would snap off at any moment if i went around the track one more time.
i actually hate exercising in the heat more, takes the p*ss outta me and makes me sluggish. i don't start hiking or any outdoor activities until late Sept at least.0 -
Go straight to the gym. If I go home I'll never make it.0

Umm, I go anyway?
There's always going to be something: being sleepy, having other chores, whatever. But if I want to make progress, I have to work for it. Once I get to the gym, it's all good. But sometimes I do have to force myself to go. I think everyone does.

I don't know how I got the motivation to play tennis outside on Saturday. It was 6C (which is bastid cold to me) and overcast. Had a good session, though. Was just wearing a t-shirt for part of the session as I was that hot!I absolutely HATE the cold, hence why I will never move away from FL lol, but when it is like freezing outside I just think after I am all hot and sweaty it will feel great!!! It usually does, it's like walking into a room with A/C after you've been outside in the hot sun all day!
Yep!0 -
It's warm in the gym Also, once you've had the workout you should be so hot, outside feels like nothing!
I remember one time last year (when I didn't have my car to take me to the gym) it was so so cold outside, I had t-shirt on, sweater and coat. Along with hat and scarf, this was in the evening. I got to the gym, did my workout, and I felt so hot I walked back home (about 15-20 minutes) in my t-shirt, in freezing weather. It was around 8pm then and I got some funny looks!
Not saying you have to do that obviously, but really, the only hard part is getting there. You'll never regret going either, but you might regret staying at home because of the weather! It's going to be cold for another few months as well, you're just going to have to do some things you don't like, for those things you do like.0 -
Well I don't go to the gym, but I do go running outside, and what gets me out there even when it is snowing is knowing that I'll be nice and warm soon, and I need to do the exercise!0

I strap on a pair, put on my big boy pants and go.0

The fact that it's right across the street. Or, I go on my walk home from work. Other than that, I've invested in some cute throw over my gym clothes clothes. Luckily it doesn't get super cold here.0

I look at myself in the mirror....that's motivation enough to go to the gym0
-
Just 'Man Up' and get on with it
^^^ this^^^
for me, I know if I don't go to the gym first thing in the morning, I won't go. So Monday-Friday as soon as my son gets on the bus, I go to the gym.0 -
When it gets cold outside, I pack my gym stuff in the morning and go straight from work to the gym. I know that once I hit the heat in the house I am not going back out. It's a little harder on Saturdays!!!0

I just work out at home.
If you examine your excuses, you'll find that is all they are. You really just didn't work out so you made the excuse of it being too cold.
You didn't say I can't go to work because it's too cold. I can't take a shower because it's too cold.
Just stop with the excuses and do it.
So, I was thinking about going back to the gym... I have been going on and off for a while and I was doing really great, had a wonderful habit built up and everything.... then my sister passed away in a car accident last year and that took everything out of me.
So I have been using her death as a reason for not going.... Then it was "I'm too busy, The kids need me, I'm too tired, The holidays so what's the point?... then it was too cold." Then I missed the way I used to feel when I would go to the gym and how that would help me to get a head start on my day. I am not a morning person by the way... So I looked up motivation to get back to the gym and I read this thread.. and it made me realize all my excuses were just that excuses. Now, I am trying to go to the gym.. made it the last two weeks and I am going to work on going early in the morning. Just works out better for my routine. Now, my husband is willing to support me because I am in a better mood when I go to the gym and I am more energized... the kids seem to like me more too.
Bottom Line: Thank you all for the reality check and the wake up call to just make myself do it. There is no other way around it.

I put my ars in the car and go...and sometimes I don't. If I don't - I do a Leslie Sansone 3 mile walking video, or Fitness Blender workout, and if I really want to sweat, the Fitness Mashall and I do some dancing together.0

I go anyway. When it gets really cold I put on snow pants (if I’m walking to the gym) and all my cold weather wear and do it despite the cold. If you don’t want to go, really any excuse will do.
What are your goals? Work for them.0 -
The cold doesn't really impact me too much, it's cold most of the year where I am so I guess I'm used to it. I try to get exercise at home, like walking up and down stairs and lifting the cat when the roads are not safe enough to go to the gym.0

The weather has put a crimp in my workout routine for sure. I enjoy walking around the local state park near my home. Walking, somehow, gives me more results for losing weight and maintaining than any other exercise.
With the cold... I've had to drive to a gym to get on an elliptical which takes in total time.. three friggin hours out of my day..so I can't do it all the time.
I'm looking at a portable rower on amazon that stores in a closet as my go to for bad weather.0 -
I go to the gym at 5am in the morning several times per week and living in the US Midwest, there are large stretches where it is extremely uncomfortable to leave my nice warm bed and go trecking outside in arctic temperatures. I can honestly say that motivation plays no role in my thought process, any more than I need to be motivated to brush my teeth or go to work. It is simply something I do, a priority which I transformed into a habit and I just don't give myself the option not to do it.
There are a few things you can do to make it more difficult to skip. Have all of your gym stuff packed up the night before and ready to go. Pre-log your workout - it is uncomfortable to face going into MFP later that day and erasing the workout that you skipped because you didn't want to deal with the cold outside (even though the gym is heated )

Work out at home if I can't go out or don't wanna go out. I search for new work out ideas then to do at home and do it 👊0

You've paid money to go to the gym, don't waste it! Remembering how tight the clothes i love are on me, wanting to look better naked! lmao0

I wonder if the people who complain about the cold in the winter also complain about the heat in the summer.
It's just a temperature. There's a great invention called coats and gloves and hats and even more. Put that *kitten* on and go work out.
FYI, this thread is very, very old.0 -

The people who complain the most about the seasonal cold and heat seem to be the ones who live 98% of their life at room temperature. "That weather is so cold! I had to endure a 20second walk from my heated home to my heated car, a 20-second walk to my heated office, worked there at 72 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 hours, then a 20-second walk to my heated car again, followed by a 20-second walk from the parking lot to a heated grocery store, etc. I totally hate the winter!" Unless you work outside, you probably shouldn't complain.1 -
Morning workouts are what work for me. Have you tried that? I get up super early. That way, at the end of a long day, I have license to veg if I need to.
And by veg I guess I mean sit for a minute or two between trips to run kids around to activities.
But if I didn’t have those things I had to do, I’d for sure sit under a blankie.0 -
No motivation, just habit. I get off my Kitten backside and go.lol1

We got a treadmill for workouts in the winter, use it almost every day. When a mild day comes along, we walk outside. Either way, we feel great afterwards.0
