Do you feel shame when buying junk food?

I notice whenever I put junk food in my cart I'll try to like cover it up with a pack of whole wheat wraps. And when I use the self-checkout I look both ways and then scan it very quickly.
Although one time it didn't scan right and I started freaking out like "oh *kitten* someone's gonna see me buying this bazooka of cookie dough"
I don't know why I care so much.
On Sunday mornings I like to go to Whole Foods and get 2 donuts and last week the clerk goes "Wow! Who are you sharing with!" I just laughed it off. I know they're trying to be nice but it's also like, why can't I have 2 donuts? This is a Whole Foods. They're healthier donuts. You don't have to scream into the intercom about my breakfast of choice.
Even the girl behind me in line, with her coconut water and basket of cherries, was giving me a look like "Seriously??? 2 donuts?"

I don't cover it up, but sometimes feel like a crazy person b/c I'll put (whatever) in my cart, walk around the store a bit stressing about it, then go put it back on the shelf.
Or I just go to the cracker or chips section and look at all of them, like pace back and forth, read the nutrition values on the package and shamefully reshelf them (...not today Vikka, not today)
Truth - I have cheese crackers in my car trunk (bet you want to know why!)4 -
I feel the shame but not enough to hide it. I usually just make an announcement about loving being fat even though that's a lie.6

Nope. I see so many people from my gym in the grocery store and they know me...............I don't demonize any food. Chips, cookies, diet soda, etc. all go into my cart with no shame.

@Vikka_V It's part of your emergency survival plan...just in case and I don't really want to go there but it's understood and appreciated. Really.2

No. Kinda wish I did. Maybe I wouldn’t buy as much.3

Never!!! I eat whatever I want. But this one time my credit card company made me feel very very guilty... I had helped a friend move, so spent all day lifting/loading furniture and packing/unpacking boxes, etc. At the end of the day I was soooo hungry and just felt like buying a ton of Jack in the Box food
I had normally been eating more salads at that time and just wanted to treat myself to some greasy salty “junk” food after all that hard work! So I spent like $30+ buying everything I wanted from the menu (even if I wasn’t going to finish it all at that time) and drove home to eat it. When I got home I saw a text on my phone from my credit card company asking me to verify that I had spent $30+ at Jack in the Box or if it was a fraudulent transaction... BUSTED!!!
I had to answer back that yes indeed I had made that purchase and felt embarrassed for about half a second then ate all the food I wanted anyway because I had earned it through all the physical activity of the day and it was something I don’t do often
I’ve been in maintenance for 7+ years, so no regrets!

Only the Ding Dongs.
..... or any other food with “Dong” in its name.

Last time I bought a box of 10,000 tampons at Costco, the cashier said, “Wow how many holes you gonna stick those in?!” and I was like “YOU SCOUNDREL!” and then I tore a leg off my rotisserie chicken and threw it at him.
My history of hiding junk food and binge eating could fill a novel. Hey, you ever been to TWO drive-thrus for yourself and hidden the food from the first from the second cashier? Ha, ha. Good times. It’s been awhile since I did that but I still have related habits and tons of shame.8 -
I eat way too much sugar. Yes, I'm aware of it...at the mercy of my Sweet-tooth. I have to do some mental gymastics to be content eating...IE glucose for my brain...glucose for my exercise. I burn most of it but its not really something you should do as an adult lol.
Its okay to have a treat now and then. Have to live a little but yeah, I eat candy and clif bars on daily basis.3 -
I always hit the produce and dairy departments before the sugary stuff so it looks like my cart is full of nothing but poptarts and zebra cakes. Never dawned on me anyone would judge me for it.
Most of that stuff is for my husband - we're trying to keep his weight up and I'll buy anything he'll eat. No one needs to know he doesn't really like chocolate covered cherries, right?5 -
^^Good point. I don’t feel the shame shopping anymore because I’m buying for both of us, not just me. I feel the shame eating, though, or getting junk from the drive-thru if it’s only for me. It amazes me that people can eat in their cars openly without shame. That is impossible for me.
Thanks for starting this thread. It’s getting me thinking about some stuff I don’t like to think about but ought to.5 -
Nope. Food is food. And looking at what I buy won't even give you a 10% glimpse into my life.5
-
Wow, I actually feel a little weird when it's only "healthy" food during a shopping trip. I once had a checkout guy comment on how well I eat and I told him that my cookie and chocolate inventory was backed up.
I also remember the days my Walmart cart was full of those 100 calorie hostess mini cupcakes (1 point per package...3 to a package). No shame there either.2 -
Now I wanna go get some donuts2
-
I just think to myself... These are for the kids. Usually that is true.
Except in a moment of weakness. Haha1 -

No but I also rarely buy it. I do believe in moderation so on the rare occasion when hot Cheetos get in my cart, I don’t feel guilty.1

YES Oh I cannot tell you how many times I played games indulging in my ice cream habit. But it only happened(s) when I'm not at a good weight.
Now that I'm climbing back up there, food trips are planned(how many things can I get at that store, then at the next store without people passing judgement or giving me that eye, that type of idiotic thinking
) When I was thin, it never bothered me what was in my cart. I could've unloaded the whole ice cream aisle onto the check-out belt and I wouldn't have batted an eye.
I'd like to think nobody gives a Cr@p what's in my cart but I sure AF judge myself.
ATM just trying to slide past this week then I'm jumping back on track and dragging my butt back onto the treadmill and throwing away leftover crap. If dh wants it, he better hide it.4 -

Omg so I'm not the only one1 -
Nope. I eat in a deficit and I can eat what I want when I want as long as it fits into my calorie goals. And some days it doesn’t fit but I eat it anyway.
Feeling any emotions about food is part of what got me into this mess and I have 0 interest in continuing down that path.

How fun! I've never even thought about it. I'm just trying to get through checkout as fast as possible. How do they know how many people you're buying food for? It seems to me that this is all in your head. I couldn't give two hoots what the cashier, or anyone else thinks. Maybe they're jealous, maybe they're having a bad day,....
Buy what you want. I'd plan on how I'm going to budget it into my calories as I'm standing in line. A question. Do you look at other people's carts?5 -

I agree... such an odd way to judge someone's life. I shop for a family of 7. From the ages of 4 to 41. All types of stuff is in my cart.
Side note, I now look in other people's carts while in Costco to see if paper towels are in stock and should I grab that first before shopping. 🤷♀️🤣😂3 -
No shame at all here. I very rarely buy store-bought junk foods - but on occasion will bake myself a half batch of chocolate chip cookies or a pineapple upside-down cake. I enjoy it without guilt and realize that I won't be losing any weight that week. After it's gone, I go back to deficit eating.
For me, it's important that indulging in food once in a while DOES NOT give me an excuse to skip my work-outs or not drink enough water or 'forget' to log the extra calories.3 -

Back when— tips for finding a good man. Go to the grocery store. Hang around the frozen dinners. Look for single men and check out their carts. Nothing but TV dinners? Probably single and available. Mostly twinkies and ding dongs? Probably hanging on to the last relationship, leave him alone. Mostly healthy produce? Grab him fast! Not only is he single, but he cooks!
Lol.
I met lots of gay guys that way.7 -
No. But sometimes I do get a kick out of what people are probably thinking when they see my cart filled with goodies, probably thinking it's for a party or my whole family when it is all for me.3

I actually do! 😀 Either because something looks good (I tend to comment how I'll just be following that person home. NON CREEPILY!) or they have a bunch of random things and I'm trying to figure out how they go together.2 -

Well, if I end up buying it I don't feel shame. That said, the idea that "I really shouldn't" does stop me from buying quite a few things. Like, I have an internal debate "this would taste nice. - Yeah, but if has high calories. You ok with that?" - And sometimes I think I am not and so dont buy it, but at other times I am fine with it and end up buying the stuff.
The main thing I sometimes feel shame about when buying food is spending (too much, but is it?) money. - And the feeling is the same no matter if the food is some nice fresh cherries, avocados, beyond burgers, or ice cream.1 -
