I don't understand what's supposed to be so bad, I know in extreme it can cause diabetes etc but in normal amounts of food whats so bad? I've never limited my sugar and I'm fine...

At only 16 and under 120, you shouldn't have to worry about sugar. But when you hit 50, or end up 100 pounds overweight one day, with high blood sugar, or insulin resistant, then you might understand why some of us have to be careful with it.

Enjoy the sugar freedom of your youth while you can!:drinker:

That is really carbs in general though, not just sugar, and only for some people.

Oh come on, don't over analyze it. Just let me be jealous!

But she did do a great job of starting a thread with lots of debate! Not bad for a newbie.

Knowing that animals fed a diet containing 15% added sugar developed cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease & dementia is enough early warning signs to eliminate fructose (either sucrose or fructose from corn syrup) from my diet.
From a health perspective. Eliminate. From a weight loss goal. Probably.
    http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2012/05/how-bad-is-fructose-david-despain.html
    http://evolvinghealthscience.blogspot.com/2013/01/what-journalists-should-know-before.html
    Thanks for those references.
A difficulty with biological science is that you can do one experiment (with randomised experiments) and someone else does another, and the two show different outcomes. Biology is not physics. So while these 2 journalists say the case is overstated, their information is based on a small number of studies, or reading Lustigs book, etc, and their claim that the case is overstated is only their opinion. There are many others who say that the evidence being published now (based on the past 2 to 5 years of work) is only scratching the surface. So they might be right, or might be wrong. My reading of the science articles behind the popular press says they are wrongly down playing the issue.
For example. http://jasn.asnjournals.org/content/21/2/261.full is pretty clear that fructose seriously affects kidney function in rats. (Kidneys are the same biological process as in humans). 1 in 7 hospital admissions in Australia is as an outcome from Chronic Kidney disease. 13-15% of Americans / Aussies have CKD. (Up from a few thousand cases 20 years ago). That's a huge concern,
This pilot research says that lowering fructose had benefit and therefore needs more research.
    http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/759622
So avoid the popular blog writers, and go back to the science.
    [/quote]

Why do you keep going back to rodent studies, when their is plenty of literature on human subjects?

And from the study you posted,

"Here, we fed rats diets containing 60% glucose or fructose for 1 mo beginning 6 wk after 5/6 nephrectomy or sham operation."

How many humans are consuming diets of 60% glucose or fructose? And do you think the higher rate of DNL that occurs in rodents is something that should be taken into consideration when talking about rodents and carb/sugar consumption?

If you're trying to get or keep nice abs then sugar is something that you really have to watch. Most people have nice abs as their goal, so that may be why people talk so much about watching sugar intake. Actually, both sugar and sodium are ab killers, so they'll really watch those two things hard to keep nice abs.

just wow is all I got for this one..

You know what's really annoying? When people respond to something with GIFs instead of actual debate.

I am now waiting for someone who thinks they're hilarious to respond to this with a slew of retarded GIFs.

Please tell me more about ice cream and plateaus. I'm truly curious as to your experience, as I've never had one of these famed plateaus. Sure, I've eaten at maintenance calories for periods of time, but I have never failed to lose weight for any period of time in a calorie deficit, regardless of ice cream or beer.

I find it interesting that in one post you are promising failure, and in another you're saying that you're just different. Which is it? Are there scientific principles that are applicable to the general population or is everyone so different that science is a waste of time?

So i am going to achieve 10% body fat eating ice cream? Is that what you're implying? Gonna buy me some ice cream right now, see you later.
Some have gotten lower than 10% by eating ice cream along with other sugary delights like kids cereal, pancakes slathered in syrup etc

I eat ice cream 4 times a week minimum.

When someone makes a statement that is so clearly incorrect that it is absurd, but seems to actually believe that statement rather than be trolling, it can be difficult to respond with anything but gifs as the original post isn't worthy of a serious response. That sugar and abs comment fits nicely into this category. In addition, responding with humor sometimes allows people to simply move on to more serious points in the discussion.

Then debunk what they've said and move on. GIFs add very little to a discussion. Or better yet, ignore the absurd post.

I wouldn't otherwise care, however posting that you WISHED you had a lot of GIFs to respond with seems pretty pointless. Just get some GIFs and use them and be done with it.

I'm not afraid of "sugar", I'm shocked by how quickly the number climbs in my food diary when I eat healthy food.

Perhaps I'm out of my league in this discussion.

me too! I always thought a fruit salad was great because of all the vitamins etc, until I started on this site and now I see how much my sugar intake goes into the red when I eat it. Should I really cut down? When I lived in Ecuador I ate loads of fruit and was healthy enough and had perfect skin. Can I replace all these vitamins with, for example, salad?

So let's test this genius idea out: i ate an icecream today (75g) + 1 chocolate cake (150g) + 1 coffee eclair (150g) and i'm still in caloric deficit by 500 calories. Bet you guys 500 bucks tomorrow i'm gonna be fat as a burger? :)

I'm sure i'm gonna hear at least one response stating "oh my god it's the sodium dude, not the sugar's fault", i just know it :)

Then why do you care what other people do? There are LOTS of reasons to avoid sugar, but if you are fine, then don't bother. Most of the people who join this site aren't fine, otherwise why would they be here? Except for those who are gifted and share their gift with the rest of us.

If you care, do some web searches and decide on your own. Otherwise, carry on.

I'm STUNNED at the OP's naivety.

It's all over PUB-MED and all medical journals. It's all over nutritional journals, websites, etc. It's all over Youtube -- there must be hundreds of videoed lectures on there by MDs and specialists, dieticians and scientists, all explaining what is wrong with eating sugar. There are dozens of books on the subject as well.

The OP must have her tongue firmly in her cheek, or has just woken up from a 25-year coma!

The MOST important thing to remember about sugar is that YMMV!
    YMMV?
