WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR APRIL 2021

Margaret - Yes,the training and leadership was a horribly weak point. No excuse. Well done for speaking up. I'm so sorry for all the traumas you went through.
I count myself a lucky woman to have a life purpose. My writing has accompanied me through my whole life. I have fought against it, tried to ignore it, run away from it, but it always comes back to demand my attention. Whatever else is going on in my life it is the one North Star. All is well if I am doing my writing. If I am not, nothing compensates. The only time I was happy not to write was just after the birth of my babies and when my SIL died. Otherwise, it is the sine qua non of my existence. My whole life is organised around that one principle. Discipline is the key. I have learnt over the years that nothing else makes for a happy life for me. The rest would be chasing rather pale rainbows.

Sue--Sorry to hear about your friend. I agree with the others that I would not put myself alone with her. Alcohol and self pity are not a good mix.
Heather--So happy you have a cruise scheduled and so looking forward to hearing about it and seeing pictures. I know it is a year off, but I do miss your trips.
Pip--What fun and you both look so happy and relaxed.
The weather this spring is crazy. 84 degrees on Sunday and yesterday in the low 30's and windy. I have been so cold the last couple days. DH keeps checking for a fever..Not sure what is going on. I have not been sleeping well, just hurt all over. I have an person calling in sick this week. She has given notice and her last day is May 7th, but I have my doubts she will last that long. So I am working extra hours this week to cover and am not happy.
My friend in rehab that I am her POA is finally getting her social security sent to the home and they will take their part and put the rest in an account for her. I am so happy that is being done. In the meantime no one will let me or her know where the money has when the last 26 months has gone. I have made reports and not gotten any answers. It is not right that her family can take the money and not pay any of her bills and not have to account for it. Sorry that is my vent for today.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND NE3 -
Vicki - could that be a police matter? Sounds like fraud or theft.
I'm so lucky that I live my trips a hundred times over before I go and when I get back. Makes them good value.

My poor best friend, who lost her mom and her favorite uncle in quick succession, just lost her cat too. Something larger than him caught up to him, unfortunately. Did I mention that she's a tax preparer? She's right in the middle of her most stressful season of the year, on top of everything else, and 2021 has not been good for her in any way. Wish I could get up there, but it's just not possible.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, it was nice to see friends again.
Not sure if I will ever keep up, always seems to be something happening. Latest thing is that our dog Leah was bitten by a snake (an adder) whilst walking on Strensall Common on Tuesday late afternoon. Of course we did everything wrong, we weren't sure if she'd been bitten so let her carry on with the walk, by the time we got home her muzzle had swollen up so called the vet and took her straight there. (When we googled it, it says to carry your dog to the car to stop the venom spreading around the body) Leah had been running around as if nothing was wrong!
We got her to the vet and was told to take her to the emergency vet about 20 mins away for anti venom treatment because they don't have it at our vets, why we couldn't go straight to the emergency vet I don't know! Poor Leah had to stay overnight on a drip because the anti venom treatment can cause side effects and she needed to be monitored.
We collected her on Wednesday morning and she was still very quiet but restless as if she didn't know what to do with herself. She settled down after we gave her some pain relief and only went out to toilet.
She is looking brighter today and the swelling has gone down a bit too, and I'm sure after a few more days of rest and lots of TLC she will be fine.
Animals are stressful! And you will not believe how much it cost, good job we love her
It's past my bedtime so I'll say goodnight and try to catch up a few pages tomorrow, until then hugs to those that need them
Love to all

Weekly grocery shopping done and dusted (literally 😂). Winter is having a last gasp at the moment. Snow, hail and winds blowing down from the north.
The tulips and daffodils are being blasted. My magnolia and camellias had started bursting forth, but the cold has stalled them, but only temporarily.
We are planning a walk after lunch with DYD and her dogs if the weather allows.
Not sure why, but my weight has dropped a couple of lbs despite having had Easter goodies over the last week. This process is often a mystery. more slowly than we are posting.

Camellias? At this time of year? You're going into spring, aren't you?
Camellias are a mid-winter flower. Ours have fat little buds on them, and we'll likely start seeing flowers when it gets colder around the end of May.

Rebecca I like your meals!
I had a long post including a rant about family and work and it just went poof....Anyway, thanks for listening even though you didn't get to read it! I need to get some more work done before bed.
Kylia pissed off at family in Ohio yet will get over it.....

My yard now has hyacinths, daffodils, and tulips. It is very colorful. My hard work has paid off with something beautiful for us and for our neighbors to see when they walk by.

The shooting was just north of my daughter's neighborhood in an industrial park area. So very sad and scary. Time will reveal what prompted the event. Too close for comfort. We are fine and will spend some time with Ros tomorrow settling her mental and emotional health down.
Thanks for the concern! Much appreciated!

Good evening all, just a quick catch up.
Pat C-good news on bloodwork. Glad you don’t have to start meds.
Tracey-thanks for sharing your experience. With my hip replacements and related experiences I know what I should do-but I often don’t listen to myself! Congrats on the pay bonus-well deserved. Sorry for loss of resident.
Barbara-I have been in touch with my trainer and we are in agreement nothing except normal movement around house for task and moving around at work until back more completely released. It seems to be helping.
Julie-had inflamed bursa in hip and then fell (two things at once). They believe the bursa came from reaction to second vaccine. However, much better than Covid!
Sue in Wa-I don’t blame you for your hesitancy to visit friend. Perhaps she could try calling you when she is sober or do a facetime/zoom.
Rebecca-personally, I believe a mother missing her son should be an emergency for all armed forces.
Viv Uk-glad dog is on the mend. I would have had no idea what to do.
Have been going into office every day this week. Feels good to have something back to some sort of normal, even if there aren't many staff present.
Back and leg showing steady improvement. Sleeping through night now (of course, I don't count the potty trip(s) as part of lack of sleep). I am hopeful this weekend I can do a short walk outside and start getting more movement.
Unusually warm here this week. Storms started to move through today and temps will be returning to normal.
Off to bed-have an early meeting in the office in the morning.
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio

Lisa: Sorry I missed your birthday. Belated best wishes, and I do hope that you find a nice, healthy rhythm to your well-deserved retirement days.
Heather: Add me to the cheering section happy to hear you have your next cruise booked.
Katla: I can almost feel your excitement about getting back to the health club and taking yoga again.
KJ: Not to alarm you, but lapses in hygiene is one of the indicators of onset of dementia. When I met DH, he showered 2x a day, and shaved daily. Now, pfffft! He looks and smells like a scruffy old man, and has no idea of how bad his blond hair looks. It's one of the biggest struggles I, and many others have, have as a caregiver.
Our new floor installation went okay. They hit a couple of snags, and caused a tiny leak on one of the toilets. They will pick up a new part and be here tomorrow to fix it. I have some more reorganizing to do in the master closet, but can only tackle bits and pieces of it between taking care of my two old guys. But overall, I am thrilled with the results. Bedroom still needs paint, window treatments and a bookcase. All in time.
Speaking of caregiving, our dear home care aid, Mary slipped and hurt her back. She hasn't been here this week, and I miss her tremendously. She has a few more weeks with this agency, and then will return to her career as an Occupational Therapist working with special needs children. I dread having to break in a new carer, but don't have any other choice. We would be so lucky to find another gem like her who has such a good way with my DH's advanced dementia quirks. 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
Speaking of quirks...I have to corral him from the kitchen where he is trying to wash dishes but making a bigger mess.
Stay well friends. Cherish your health and that of your loved ones. We can do this.

LisaInArkansas wrote: »Heather - still writing, but the subjects I was willing to tackle have slowed down. Picking and choosing more these days - if I have to do three hours of research, then another hour to write a 600-word article that pays $23, then it's not worth it. For a 1,000-word article that pays $67, it makes sense, but with the longer writing time, if the research is more than a couple hours, it's still getting past the point of being worth it. I try to keep my pay in the $20 an hour range if possible.
The biggest part is always the research time. For instance, the last four I wrote were about the mythology around the March birthstone, what a social work master's degree entails, the synergy between technology and social work (same client) and what's available in the area around Irving, Texas. All of these were reasonably easily researched pieces.
However, a quick sample of the ones that are available right now are requests for: How to deal with ransomware, whether businesses should use Exchange servers, the data centricity of artificial intelligence, and electronic healthcare records interoperability. I know that I could write any of those four, but I have zero interest in learning technology at those levels anymore.
There are moments, honestly, when I feel like a petulant child. I just don't WANT to do that! I've done a couple of the high-tech ones on special request from the company--but didn't like it. The best part of being retired is supposed to be doing what you want... And at the moment, there aren't many that I want to write. There's an ebb and flow, and more will come around again later.
Thanks for asking.
Lisa
Have you thought about doing freelance editing? My brother does that and seems to enjoy it. I think he has acquired work through Upwork, but I could be mistaken.

Here they bloom all winter, and there's a brief overlap with spring when the daffodils come out and the camellias are in their last week or two.0 -
Worked today so no formal exercise. Did get in over 10,000 steps. The plan for tomorrow is to do Cathe Drill Max DVD. Then I go to the church to pick up donations for the Corner Table from them then the soup kitchen.
At work today there is a sign now that the water they have is for all the employees and that you should only have 1 or 2 bottles each so there is enough for everyone. Well, ever since we’ve had to wear these masks, many many times my throat feels like it’s going to close up. I just take a drink of water and I’m fine. I do bring my 40oz bubba mug to work with me and fill it with water. Honestly, I can usually go thru 4 bottles of water any one day. I have gotten to the point where I bring water with me because many times there isn’t any water and I need it. When I saw that sign, the first thing I thought of was “how petty can you get, now we’re rationing water?” I don’t know. I guess some people do take advantage of it, but really I need it for my heath (well, that’s probably a pretty strong word). Sometimes I’ll take a bottle with me because I don’t know if I’ll need more than 4 bottles. Then I usually take it home with me because for one thing I don’t want to leave my stuff for someone else to clean up (I many times have to clean up after the night crew) and because even tho I live like only ½ mile from the store, I need to drink as soon as I take that mask off. I feel like the sign is targeting me, but I need this and I even bring my own.
Heather – so happy for you getting that trip and look forward to living vicariously thru you
Viv UK – tell me how stressful animals can be! See below about Bonnie (one of the cats)
katla – yea for working furnaces!
Shana – I had a hard time with Easter, fell off the wagon, too. But getting right back up, and you will too
Hope it doesn’t rain in the afternoon tomorrow, I want to finish washing the windows
Rori – (((HUG)))) I’m so sad to read about Mary. You deserve someone as great as she is.
Vince took Bonnie to the vet because she appeared to be favoring her right rear leg. As it turns out, she has a mass, so the vet recommended we take her to Carolina Veterinary Services for a CT scan. As it turns out, she has 3 masses. We figure that once our vet found the first one, he stopped looking. Anyway, it looks from the CT scan that it’s cancer, probably carcinoma but they aspirated it today and we’ll know definitely tomorrow or Monday. There’s something on her liver and lungs, it looks like it’s spreading. We have some prednisalone to give her. This is a steriod. Lexi gets it to calm her digestive tract. Bonnie is going to be getting it to shrink the tumor enough so that she can eat. The vet did see it starting to eat away at her skull. Vince is really upset. I’m upset, but not like Vince is. So, Viv, I totally get where you are coming from. Of course, Jess wants copies of all the records, which we don’t have a problem with. This vet said that it’s a good learning experience for her, especially since she’s so close to the situation. We can give her radiation etc. But even Vince agreed that the quality of life is important. He didn’t feel that way when Sassy was diagnosed with cancer. I felt “let Mother Nature take its course, just let him be happy”. He wasn’t happy being sick from the chemo. But Vince wouldn’t give up. In the end we had to have Sassy put down. Well, now Vince feels like he held on too much. I actually (and he listened) suggested that if she were to get real bad, we might want to consider putting her down to put her out of her misery. What if she tried going down the stairs or something and fell and hurt herself? As it is now, one of the tumors is affecting her ear which in turn is affecting her balance. So we shall see how things go. The vet gives her 2 to 3 months.

The visit to the Dr which triggered my husband to start showering a bit more regularly included a discussion about dementia. He is likely to start deteriorating soon and as you say, forgetting personal hygiene is one of the indicators. When he heard that, he started showering a bit more regularly.
I'm sorry to hear your gem Mary will be moving on. It is hard to transition to someone new. We had Kaz who was fantastic. I could just about have moved her in here full time. But eventually she had to go to be with her mother and we had new people who weren't as good. I hope you can find someone as good!!

I have low energy and wish for more. I’ve been too sedentary. I t is time to walk regularly & call my friend at the stable.
I’ve been watching a real trial on TV. It is in Minnesota. I hope to see the end and justice served.
