The landscaper arrived at 8 AM with two truckloads of beautiful black fine bark mulch. They spread more than half of it on the area between our house and the rock boundary of the house next door. The rest of it (about four cubic yard)s is in two piles so I can spread it around the rest of the yard as I pull the weeds. i am ecstatic.

Allie: You have been busy! :flowerforyou:
Pip: I like your Meerkat and your pup!
Margaret: I agree with you that rioting is a bad thing. I think of you and your son often. His treatment by the police back then was appalling. I’ve been watching the proceedings on TV. A forensic doctor/coroner has testified and given good information. His work seems to be primarily on people who have died. I believe that more is to come next week. I hope that justice can be achieved with better training for police and strict rules on caring for human beings. I also hope the brutal officers are charged with their the killing of an unarmed citizen & set for trial. We can’t fix the past, but perhaps we can learn and improve things now and into the future. This is my wish and prayer.
Heather: Since Prince Phillip has passed away, who will be the new royal in charge? Is Charles next in line? Might he remain a prince or become the king? :flowerforyou:
A friend has recommended buckwheat flour. Have any of you used it? What do you think of it?
Katla in NW Oregon
The queen is in charge and was when Phillip was alive. When the queen dies then prince Charles will b king1 -
Love this photo of The Queen and Prince Phillip. He had dressed up as a guard to trick her, saying "Good Morning, Ma'am" as she passed by. Apparently he had quite a sense of humour ... and I love the look on her face.

The tv channels here spend hours and hours and days showing details for any event they consider news worthy....deaths, government announcements, etc..
Carol in GA
Here as well. Sports also take priority. Last night there was a movie I hoped to watch and it was even being shown on 2 related channels according to the guide. But 2 different unannounced sports events took priority. That's just the way it goes sometimes. I watched a Phryne Fisher DVD instead and probably enjoyed that more than the movie.
That's why I have a growing collection of DVDS. You can't count on what might be shown on TV.

Quiet day today. Reading newspaper. Languages, Exercises.
The cleaner came. She has given herself a pay rise, which I don't object to, but it was rather a large hike all at once! I discussed it with my DDIL, as we share her, and she was OK with it, so I'm going along with it. It was a bit of a shock though, to put it up by nearly a third!
Well, I definitely don't want to do it.
I think it's right that they should receive good renumeration for a hard job, but I'm glad I only need her once a fortnight!
Sauerkraut, cabbage, onion, bacon and kielbasa for dinner, with Brittany cider. Wholegrain mustard.
Going to watch Young Montalbano tonight. Need to brush up my Italian for next year - Italy, Sicily, Sardinia. I'm reluctant to really go for it though as I'm worried it will affect my Spanish. I do get them horribly mixed up.

@kjlamoreHave any of you had to re-think or re-do your bathrooms due to advancing age and declining physical ability?
my sister had to have a couple of bars put in after a long ailment a couple of years ago. she was a renter in public housing so it was free.i'm sure my mom had to use a shower stool at some point.
today i've had 2 sorts of veggies so far! LOL (carrot juice and leeks!)Good Tuesday!
Catching up on work paperwork for past 4 hours. Taking short break.
Julie I understand the ritual. My husband's morning ritual is set in concrete! I really need to get into rituals or routines, but somehow life keeps me on my toes! I do have to have things organized a certain way to work on them though. Papers must be sorted before my brain can comprehend what I am suppose to do. I can leave dishes in sink, but can't concentrate with clutter around the house. I am weird.🤪
Back to the grinding wheel. I dont even go to work for another 2 hours!
❤
Kylia in Ohio where folks are wanting to cut grass but mowers not starting.
@Kymarai i need things to be sorted to think too. it's been a disaster (or relative disaster) for a while. Of late i've really been getting more on top of things.1 -
five different veggies I buy frozen mixed vegetables (corn, green beans, carrots, peas) and add some limas and steam them in a saucepan on the stove and voila---five veggies every day.
Sleep, I learned a long time ago that I can't make myself sleep when my body has different ideas, so I just go with the flow. There's a lot to do while lying awake--some of it is productive and some of it results in falling asleep again.

Exactly for the veggies! Easy peas-y! (pun half-intended)
SLEEP APPROACH:
New approach:
-going to bed at 10 or 11.
-put on "pink noise", as background sound
-setting screen to go dimmer and yellower at night
-no coffee after 2pm, no green tea after 4pm.
-no alcohol, (so far anyway)
-in bed for 7 to 9 hours
-not a lot of starch late in day

Sue in WA, i would also definitely not go to CO. if she's sober maybe a zoom, but not for 3 hours.
I have never found it useful to anyone to listen to people going off the end at length. i used to listen to people going on and on sometimes, and then it felt like i wasn't really being a friend -that way- cause inside i was feeling really disconnected from them in their endless blah-blah-blah, whereas they were probably imagining they were being heard. So now i try to interject at some point and make the convesation more reciprocal or just jump in and give some info about me. i think i started learning that with some guys some years ago. some - even charming- will just go on and on about themselves but they don't mind if i make a point to interject...
in french they call that "emptying one's bag" when people just go on and on and on without really any concern about listening.1 -
@Machka9 i love the pic of the queen and prince Philip making her laugh!
SPORTS
not a priority for me. that's the one area of the newspaper i will without exception skip. sometimes i do a news quiz and when there are sports questions that is absolutely a blind spot for me.
i've been working on a job application that requires a 5 page written document (about my approach) and another document.
my concentration is relatively poor at the moment. i was rewriting and gluing and pasting various documents together.
too much- and .....'arrg"

A big thanks to all of you ladies who chimed in on my best friend problem. Your input made me do some thinking about our entire 50-year friendship and her expectations throughout. This however is the first time the alcohol has gotten to be such a huge problem. I blame that on the Covid lockdown. I did send her an e-mail and tell her I would not go to CO.
Rebecca - I know first hand this does not really help but my DD when she was incommunicado told me once that if I did not hear anything it meant she was OK. If she was not she would have called. I don't get that reasoning but so it is.
Pip - Sounds like you guys had an enjoyable maiden trip to Morro Bay.
Welcome to those who are new.
Wanted to spray one of the pastures today but it is much too windy. The spray would end up everywhere but where I need it I think.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA5 -
Reading without a lot to add. Love the photos, of course.
Pip ... the MeerKat looks like it was a success. Certainly Yogi thought so.
Rori ... prayers for you in these days that seem as they have no end ...
Kay ... hope your husband is doing better now ...
Margaret ... I can only imagine how difficult the trial is for you. Bravo for focusing on the things that maintain your equilibrium. The news isn't good for anyone.
Modifications to Homes ... As my son was dependent on a wheelchair, we had all the bells and whistles that we could afford and insurance would provide. Not completely up to ADA specifications, but what made sense for him. Roll in shower/rolling shower chair, ceiling lift equipment, toilet supports, ramps, etc. Watching my parents try to age in place, they have had grab bars installed that are anchored into actual studs, shower chairs in both the tub and shower stall, raised toilet seats, water faucets that are paddle type (not knobs). My dad has moved from a regular bed to an height/position adjusting bed and they both use lift recliners. They were nearly scammed by a chair-lift for stairs installer ... so beware about that. There are all kinds of products that can help make life easier if your loved one is willing to use them.
Speaking of equipment, we have donated everything but the wheelchair van. I was surprised by the fact that our vendor (also a friend) wanted everything including outdated and heavily used equipment like shower chairs. He told us the demand is huge and insurance is covering less and less. I find that reprehensible. We are looking for a buyer for the van, but to the right person will offer it far below market value.
Barbara ... Cecil ... is now 19 weeks. He loves my husband's chair! Edited: Spoiler not working again!
We are trying to get the yard cleaned up. The property boundaries have old/scrubby type trees that lost multiple limbs or came down completely. Picking that stuff up before the yard needs mowed.
Kylia ... I took your advice and had my husband take care of our lawn equipment early! We are seeing evidence of parts/equipment shortages in NY too. Our garage door spring broke and when the repairman arrived he also told us that things are not looking good. We deal with a large company in the area and got the last spring for our model door that they had. He told us that parts are on backorder everywhere.
My eating patterns are all over the place. Some days I do really well and others are just a bust. I really do want to rein things in a little bit as I'm scheduled for a PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injection in my knee in early May. I want the best outcome possible with the injection and I'm guessing loads of starch and sugar is not going to help my situation. Grocery shopping has become one of my grief triggers. I can barely get through the store without thinking about my son ... the things he liked to eat ... the modifications we made because of his egg allergy. As a result, I just buy whatever I see and get out as quick as possible. I will have to get back to lists and meal planning again, because cheap honey buns and crumb cakes are not good for anyone's diet!
One day at a time ...

Nowadays I eat eggs for breakfast at nine, then hot cocoa with fiber stirred into it. Then oatmeal for lunch at noon with protein powder stirred into that. Then boiled chicken at three. And maybe 200 calories of filler. I have spinach to make a salad but I keep reaching for the baking chocolate! I am largely sedentary, hoping that as I lose weight my knee will be happier and I can move more. Hope I can stick to this program! I am allergic to dairy, so no milk, cheese or butter.4
-
I wanted to rethink things because my sister lost four pounds. It shouldn't matter, but it does.😉 But my routine is pretty well optimized when I stick to it. My mom cooks a lot of fried food and red meat. I do better eating my boiled chicken at three and using IF as an excuse to skip supper. Then I can concentrate on helping her prepare supper for her and my dad.
I have a stretch and dumbbells and calisthenics routine that I do Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. So that works. I haven't had a cookie in three days. So that's going well. I think I am on the right track as long as I stay away from the cookies and other random treats my mom brings home.2 -

Beth I understand how grocery store is a trigger, Son and I grocery shopped together,. I see certain foods and is a trigger for mr too. I still have a salted nut bar and mentoes sitting in his candy dish. I always made sure he had fresh blueberries and raspberries. Hugs!!!3

Exercise - I enjoy walking, swimming ( pools are closed though) and I enjoyed Zumba when I did it. I truly don’t like anything that costs me money though, I don’t see the sense.
I also don’t like anything that makes me sweat.
Title of my life book - Decisions, Decisions. I feel overwhelmed with all of the decisions that need to be made continuously and every decision can set your whole life on a different path.
Heather - when our youngest was a little girl still learning to talk, DH drove truck. He drove to the Deep South in the states to Newfoundland and he picked up accents quickly like you. Our daughter started sounding like a drunken southerner. Everywhere we went, people would ask where she got her accent.
I never wanted pets because when the girls were little it was something else for me to care for on my own when hubby was away. We thought seriously about a dog this past Fall, but the vet bills put us off. I was scared I would have a suffering animal and not be able to have it cared for properly.
I also, say something and wait for it to be soak in and be his idea. For 4 years I’ve been saying I want a door with a window, cost has been prohibitive, but yesterday he found one on Marketplace! We will paint it before we hang it.
One of my functions at work is paying the invoices, prices have gone crazy since the pandemic started. For a not for profit it’s been hard. As a human with no pay increases to match the costs it’s quite worrisome.
Carol - my husband stores stuff in the shed and I leave it alone. I figure if I don’t have to look at it, I don’t need to worry. I’m sure someday, I’ll be in there shaking my head and cursing, but he at least keeps it mostly organized. My cousin’s husband hoards clothes and memorabilia, she takes two or three things at a time, hides it and if after 6 months he hasn’t looked for it or mentioned it, she disposes of it. 😂. It’s a slow process but she is always hiding something so it’s an ongoing project.
Allie - You mentioned doing laundry and I took a break from reading to go start ours. I have to work tomorrow so today is my only free day this week.
“Well i slept off and on all night ,woke up and have to keep clearing my throat... darn congestive heart failure” I didn’t know this was a thing, I’m curious does it make you cough when you are lying down?
Lisa - I agree with you about women and the financial aspects. I do absolutely everything except building stuff. Someone asked me recently why I felt the need to do that, I think it was a combination of things. My role models growing up were mostly stay at home women so I thought that’s what all women did. When we were still newly married my husband started driving truck and I had to handle it all. If I waited the 2-3 weeks for him it would have been a disaster. The last was I was a teen in the 80’s all tv women worked and managed the house and they all made it look so easy. Annie on One Day at a Time, Claire Huxtable, the Dynasty and Dallas women. I just grew up thinking it was all my responsibility. I look at young families today and think they are more partners than my friends and I.
We moved backwards in Covid restrictions yesterday, restaurants are closed to dining in again, a bunch more, but I can’t remember it all as it doesn’t affect me. Working in LTC I have stuck with the original restrictions for most of it anyway. However, I had promised our Granddaughter a sleepover last night and her brother next week. Rather than break the promise and knowing they have not really left their house I kept the promise. Since she hasn’t been here by herself, we went to Walmart this morning and she convinced me she needed a new dress to match her mask and shoes.
Later we went to the dollar store for some craft paint and she had to wear her whole ensemble. As we were leaving and I took this picture to send to her Mom she says, “I hope no one ignores me, because I’m so pretty”.
We will be leaving shortly to take her home.

She is left handed and needed help writing some words and wanted me to hold her hand. Her grandfather is left handed so I told her to ask him for help. I had to sneak a picture.

Flea: I’m planning to go looking for buckwheat flour later today. One of our local stores does an excellent job with varieties of flour for cooking and I hope I’ll find it there. They carry many Bob’s Redmill products & I hope they have buckwheat, too. I appreciate your comment that a little goes a long way.
Machka: Thank you for Caring is universal. :flowerforyou:
(((Lisa)))
I got the buckwheat flour this afternoon. I’m looking forward to giving it a try. Unfortunately, they were out of several other items I wanted to buy. :grumble:
