So here I am about 8 days away from TOM - and my weight spikes up by 3 lbs.
Why does it have to do this... lol
My norm seems to be stay the same all month, go up right before TOM and then drop during after TOM by a couple pounds...
It makes the rest of the month UNBEARABLE
I hate being a woman.
That is all

Menopause is AWESOME!

If it helps, the fluctuations you're seeing around your period are almost definitely 100% water. You're not trying to lose water, you're trying to lose fat.7

Right!
I get that it's annoying, and I am annoyed by these fluctuations myself sometimes, but it does make my heart break a little bit to hear women say they hate themselves for having normal, functioning female bodies. I know it's mostly a joke, but it's one of those cultural norms that just drives me batty. There's nothing wrong or bad about having a body that functions differently than a man's. Your body is doing its thing and while it might not seem like much, I feel like there's a lot more peace about it when you accept it rather than fight it. Maybe trying to adjust how you think about it will make it seem more bearable. Because you're not broken!7 -

contraceptive pill in long-term cycle is brilliant!

I understand that our bodies are doing their thing. But I hate these things (not talking about bloat), and I hate medicine being ignorant about 'female' problems most of the time because it's just a bit of pain and discomfort, and now stop complaining and accept it. No, I don't and I won't. Fortunately there are ways around it, even if it means taking hormones. But this way I'm in control. Take this, body! Take this, medicine.
Phew, now I feel better.6 -

When I lived in the UK doctors didn't even offer any solution. Every single doctor was shocked I took the pill in long-term cycle (without any side effects, I hasten to add) and told me to stop immediately. I'd lived in quite a few other countries before, and it was never seen as a problem. Those UK docs could not offer me ANY solution. Just stop complaining and don't come back. That was all.5 -

My feelings are kind of all over the map about this. I've been on the receiving end of the "throw the Pill at it" treatment (simply was young, single, and female, no health complaints to speak of) and also the "women are hysterical and make up everything, be tougher" treatment. I do generally think gynecology as a field is a mess. It seems like women have, in some ways, broadly absorbed the prevalent mindset that we must be defective men and are in need of fixing to be more like them so we just stop bothering everybody with our problems.
(That said, absolutely women's health should be treated seriously and hormones can frequently play a part of that. I tend to think we're very poorly educated on our own bodies. I tend to spread the blame around for that to a lot of different corners.)
Anyway, OP, sorry for the diversion! My only point is to say that some of these cyclical changes are perfectly normal and fine and a sign that things are going well, not badly. Learning to roll with the punches (I almost said "go with the flow" but that seemed a little too on the nose) can be helpful sometimes.9 -
I kinda get the feeling the OP was just venting and knows it's just temporary.
But, to throw my hat into the pill ring, when I was 18 I was diagnosed with polycistic ovaries and was put on the pill because I was only getting my period maybe 4 times a year and they said the build up would be toxic or something. I assume it helped because I got my period regularly and haven't died or anything from the prior toxicity.
I also assume the only side effects were weight gain because I lost the requisite 10 lbs once I went off it but didn't realize it had made me gain weight at first because I was already so overweight.5 -
Hugs, OP. I hear ya! Most of the time, I'm grateful for my strong body. But on those days when I wake up and can't fit into something that fit as recently as last week, simply because of hormonal fluctuations or water retention, I want to scream and cry. My poor husband has faced the wrath of this injustice more than once. I try to take those days and just not look in the mirror, wear something comfy that makes me feel good, and continue with the plan. There are also good days when I put on a favorite dress or trousers and feel like a super model.
The female body isn't a mystery to science, but to many of us who were raised with shame in an environment of "don't talk about it," it's hard to accept it all as normal. It would be lovely if society could normalize what bodies with a uterus go through
P.S. FWIW, one thing I try to remember is that I am the only one who knows about those 3-5 pounds. Nobody else can tell. Nobody else cares. It still sucks, but it helps to remember this. Hugs to you.6 -

This happens to me as well! I only lose weight once a month after my period so I have to wait another 5 weeks before the scale goes down. At this point the only way I can help is to tell you you’re not the only one. Sometimes I even wonder if the scale is broken…4 -
So here I am now a couple days AFTER TOM - and I dropped 2 extra pounds...
Let the cycle continue!
And thank you everyone who commented... yes I was being facetious, and poking some fun...
I just wanted to rant a little4 -

I'm sort of happy to hear this. I'm with the VA and not happy with the GYN care I've received, but am taking some comfort in the fact that it is not just the VA or the US.1 -
I'm sitting here all crampy and commiserating.5

yes. being a woman sucks.
i will agree with that statement.
except for the fact that i dont have to work and my husband does. though, i guess some men have that deal too, its just not as common. we also have the whole pregnancy and childbirth thing and stretch mark thing. that doesnt seem fair, either.
cellulite. definitely not fair.
we dont have balls hanging between our legs though, so, theres that. but peeing standing up would be useful at times. yeah i know, there are devices for that, but not very discreet or easy to use, yanno? lol3 -
I gain during TOM and during ovulation...it sux...but I gotta keep on with my good eating habits and my moving1
