Maintaining and building muscle

Hi,

Im completely new to fitness. I've set myself a target to try and get fitter and to tone up. Im skinny build so i dont need to lose weight. Everything article online seems to contradict the next.

Is there anyone who can offer any adice on where to begin?

Follow a well programmed weight lifting routine (although if you are a beginner just about any old training will work for a while).
Eat at or around maintenance calories.
A higher than average protein intake is helpful.

That's really all there is to it and gyms are full of people getting stronger and getting in better shape without any great nurturing or fuss, just a bit of perseverance.

You must be looking at remarkably poor sources of information, not necessarily your fault as the fitness industry does thrive on maximising complexity to keep clients paying!

There's a long running "Recomp" (short for recomposition) thread in the maintaining weight forum and you will find plenty of useful information there.

This link will take you to the latest page in the thread and there's a couple of good videos linked there which are worth watching as well as a scan through the rest of the thread.

If you feel too thin, and want to gain weight (such as muscle gain), you might like some things in the "Weight Gain and Body Building" part of the Community, and find some like-minded people there. Direct link here:

That's where most of the "build muscle" focused folks hang out, whether trying to gain weight or not. You might find some helpful things in the "Most Helpful Posts" subsection of that topic area.

Wishing you success with your goals!

Your user ID sounds masculine but on the off chance you’re a lady:
