Going to the gym

So, I'm going to start trying to utilize the gym for more then just the classes. Does anyone use an app that tells them what machines and excercises to do on what day and gives them like instructions and a routine that lets them fully utilize the gym?

I don't use any apps, but there are tons of beginner lifting programs out there. The vast majority of beginner programs are full body programs or close to full body and they are typically done 2-3x per week. There are many other more advanced programs that follow this kind of split as well and I am partial to them as they are an efficient way to hit everything you need to hit at least 2x per week which is what you ideally want to do. Keep in mind that you don't want to hit the same muscle groups on consecutive workouts as it impedes recovery and progress...so for a full body split, it is typically done 2-3x per week on non-consecutive days.

Other types of typical splits are:

    Push/Pull - Typically 4x per week
    Upper/Lower - Typically 4x per week
Body Part Splits - Typically 5-6x per week

Here is a good rundown of various programs.

I haven't really seen any apps like you're talking about except for paid apps that some of these programs have. Most apps just provide a laundry list of exercises and you just pick and choose which isn't a particularly good way of going about it. Having a structured program is best.
