When will I see results?

I know there is some number of weeks before being able to see anything. I’m a 5’9” 293lb female. I’ve been going to the gym and eating healthy/calorie deficit for 10 days now. I started at 300lbs. But worried that it’s just water weight right now? When will I be able to see the changes?
I would also love to add friends so we can help each other out! Please add me!

Visual results are slow and very incremental. It's going to be awhile. This is particularly true the more weight you have to lose vs say 10 Lbs up or down on someone who is already very lean. Also, "problem" areas where we tend to want to see the most change are most often primary fat stores and a first on, last off kind of thing. Most people tend to lose from their extremities first which isn't really particularly visibly noticeable.
I lost a total of 40 Lbs from 220 to 180 and there really wasn't any noticeable visible difference in my appearance until I got into the 190s and my face started slimming. My mid section was the last to go with my last 5-10 Lbs.
Strap in, it's a long ride.18 -
Have someone take progress photos of yourself. I didn’t and I wish I had.
Your brain may fool you and make you unable to “see” change as it happens. Progress photos will help with this Body Dysmorphia, too.
You may not see change with your eyes, but look for change like waistbands getting looser, zippers not fighting back, blouses looser around neck and shoulders.
And my very very favorite thread of all:

An NSV is a non scale victory and there are hundreds of them that sneak up on you.10 -
If you've dropped 7 pounds on the scale in 10 days, and you've been accurately hitting a sensible calorie goal during that time, the overwhelming likelihood is that some of that weight loss is fat. How much of it? No way to know. Fat loss is gradual, shows up in our average weight change over time (multi weeks, at minimum a whole menstrual cycle if you're the right age/stage for that to apply).
Example: If Susie averaged 195-202 pounds the first week of July (up and down, not necessarily 195 on day 1 and 202 day 7), and she's up and down between 190 and 195 pounds in the first week of August, it's reasonable to think she's lost something around a pound and a quarter to maybe 2ish pounds of fat a week on average. That's good, right?
Yes, some of what you've lost so far is water weight. That's normal. And water weight will keep bouncing up and down in a confusing way, all through the process. The multi-week changes in weight range tell a story, though.
You're doing fine. Hang in there! Real-life loss of any material amount of weight is a long-term process, weeks to months and maybe even years . . . and then comes maintaining the loss, a forever kind of endeavor. That puts a premium on understanding how it works, and patiently yet persistently sticking with the process. Making it (relatively) easy is more crucial to success, IMO, than trying to make it fast.2 -
I would take monthly pictures. It’s a bit different for everyone but tends to start to be noticeable once you’ve lost at least 10% of your body weight. Patience and perseverance are key. You’ve also gotta be ready for scale fluctuations…. they happen and that doesn’t mean you aren’t still losing weight. Water weight can change pretty dramatically from one day to another.
To me it really is science. Use MFP over a period of time of at least six months and compare the calories eaten to the weight lost. This will help you determine how many calories you need to eat to maintain weight and you can adjust your calories from there to continue desired weight loss. Weight loss and maintenance is a long game, and technically something you gotta keep working at.
Good luck, you got this!!!

You're a smart cookie.
Don't be alarmed but I've never given a second thought to water weight. I don't care what it is. If it shows up on the scale, I take it for what it is. Oooo, don't worry, it's only water weight. Well, maybe it's the real deal. Lard.
Only the Shadow and hydrostat pool knows for sure. I don't worry about it.1 -
Thanks all! I am taking progress pictures and trying so hard to keep the scale check to one day a week (but it’s so hard not to look). I’ve been battling this weight-loss thing for what feels like years now, but was fighting an undiagnosed eating disorder so I was constantly binging and was very addicted to food. I’m battling that right now and I am confident that I will finally be making moves now.10

I lost 40 lbs before visibly noticing a change. Keep going. Take pics to help. And don't forget to add one here.1

For me, it usually starts with the no scale victories like my clothes being not so tight, fitting better, stuff like that. I am really bad about taking photos, but as others have said that's one way to do it. Also tracking measurements.1
-
Be patient. Avoid the scale if lack of progress bothers you. I'm around the same stats (5'7 and 280) and have gone from the same weight down to 145. It will take a 10-30 lbs to see a clothes size difference which should take 3-6 months. You don't want to lose too fast as it can result in lots of loose skin and/or muscle loss.3

Think of it as peeling an onion. Taking one layer off a large onion, you don't notice much difference. But when you've already stripped off a number of layers, removing one layer makes more of an impact visually
- take progress pictures: you may not see a difference yourself when you take them, but you might when you're further in your journey (our minds can play tricks on us)
- take measurements and/or use non stretchy clothes to judge your progress
- trust and focus on the process: set goals that aren't linked to the scale e.g. logging everything you eat, increasing your step count,... Whatever goal you feel will help you reach your goal, but isn't linked to seeing progress on the scale or in the mirror5 -
I take a monthly photo of me wearing a shirt which is currently too small. Today's photo is roughly 1.5 kg different from last month's photo and the difference is certainly noticeable. I also take measurements in a lot of locations. These really show how quickly (or slowly) I'm losing fat. Measurements have the advantage of not being affected by salt intake. Check out my posts on the Give Me 10 Days challenge if you want to see how it's going.1

It's different for everyone. I started at 230 lbs (I'm 5'4) and I was so afraid of it messing with my head if I did not see any progress on the scale that I did not weigh myself for the first time until 5 weeks after my start date. When I finally did I had lost 8 lbs. At that point I could not see a difference in the mirror but there was a difference in how I felt (less knee and hip pain) and my pants were not quite as tight. After 12 lbs I could see a difference. It wasn't apparent to me in the mirror but I could see it looking at before and after pics.
In the April 2021 pic I was around 230 lbs. The March 2022 pic was at 218. The July pic was at 187 lbs. I'm almost half way there.

I started around 210 pounds and didn’t see a real difference in the mirror until I hit the 170’s. Other people started noticing around the high 160’s. Usually commenting on how “ flattering” my outfit was. The first “ oh my goodness you’ve lost so much weight” comment was in the 150’s. And then about every 12 pounds down after that brought comments.3

So checking in, I’m down to 290 right now, I’m on day 25 currently, so things are going well so far! Took a small hit, did get down to 288 but then just started working from home and my workout schedule was thrown off. But going to keep on keeping on!16

That’s super good progress for less than a month!!!! Yay, you!!!!
I used to do crazy stuff like hold a ten pound bag of potatoes, or cradle a couple large chuck roasts in grocery store, and silently tell myself,”Girl! You’ve lost this much!” and then think how awkward it would be to carry that around, 24/7.
I know it sounds whacko, but it really helped me continue.
It was awesome when I got to Kitty Litter size, lol.11 -

On top of things like that for thinking of how the weight feels, I like this picture to visualize the volume:

I too suggest focusing on non-scale victories, like in the thread someone mentioned earlier. My weight hasn't changed much yet (220lb in May, 210lb now) but after LOTS of lap swimming I can tell the legs of my jeans are now mostly filled by thigh muscles front and back instead of saddle bags to the sides. What NSV would help you feel good about progress???4
-
How are you getting on now @pinkpop249 ?
I find that fitness is a good way of having NSVs. Maybe walking the same route quicker, planking for longer.
I noticed during my cool down stretches that my pigeon pose is really good and has really improved and I’m taking that as a win.3 -
Hi all! Slight update, I’m 287lbs. NSV’s include:
•PR: 30 minutes on stairs (started at max 5 mins)
•I can feel some muscle build up in my calves and forearms
•I don’t feel as hungry as I used to, definitely curing my eating disorder one day at a time (used to binge eat a lot)
•Not consuming as much sugar
•Arms are starting to loosen up in my clothing. Doesn’t feel as tight.
Finally got an appt with a trainer in October, so excited to see what he will plan with me. For now just keeping on with what I’m doing. In a caloric deficit of 1300 cal a day and trying to work out atleast 4-5 times a week.5 -
Also just recently started working on my core a little more, and I am able to see a little bit of progress

I’m so happy you’re updating!2

I was 320lbs start of this year. I’ve been battling my weight my whole life! Previously I’ve lost a couple of stone but couldn’t tell a difference, gave up and put it back on.
I’ve recently lost just under 7 stone so far. I still can’t tell a difference really when I look in a mirror (I can tell when I look at photos, so strange) I am in smaller size clothes though.
People started commenting around the 5 stone mark, now when I loose weight people notice a lot faster now I’m smaller. Last weekend I had 4 people in one day mention how much weight I’ve lost and that I look amazing, it just took a long time for it to show.
Hang in there and trust it will happen!4 -

Body Dysmorphia is a thing. I went through the same thing. It took ages to go away for me, and even now still flares it’s ugly head.
You know how the kids talk about “food babies” ? If I eat or drink a lot, and see my food baby in the mirror or shower, it can take me back. I have to take calming breaths and remind myself this too shall pass.
Literally, lol.
Have people take more photos. I’ve had to ask my husband to randomly take more of me so I can see myself as “others” see me. He forgets though. 🤦🏻♀️
