Now I'm stuck with an ingredient. I have Brazilian black turtle beans, dried. Considering they're hard and probably contain very little water I'd think they should be around 350 calories/100gr yet everything I find points towards about 140 calories. Basically I find no database entries for any type of beans that appear to be dry even with the added 'dry' bit. Any idea?

I have one package of black beans, it says 56g dry=130 cal and another brand of the same small black beans that says 35g=80 calories
I have a package of small red beans, it says 35g dry=120
Pinto (small beige speckled) 35g=120
Small northern (same size bean, white) 35g=90

Thanks a lot. So it's around 300something indeed. I think the database is acting up on me again.0

Yep I checked the Italian language data base and there are lots of entries. They go from 286 cal to 322cal for 100g dry. Around 300--you should be good. Those beans are great, lots of flavor. My family loves them. I either use them in a taco salad or with basmatic rice. I cook them up in a tomato sauce.

Thanks a lot. I found a bag that I bought in Brazil ages ago. Do they need a long time to soak up water/cook or could it be mine are a bit too old? Soaked them for 24hrs and am now cooking for over an hour, and they slowly become edible. Maybe not the best cooking ingredient to use. Sigh.0 -
I tend to find that using the word ‘raw’ rather than ‘dry’ brings up more accurate entries where beans and lentils are concerned.
The Black Bean entry I use is 347 cals per 100g. It looks to me, from it’s syntax, as if it’s one of the original entries sourced from the USDA.
It’s definitely the case that the older your dried beans are they longer they’ll take to cook, even after extended soaking times. Occasionally, old beans will never soften enough to become mealy as most people choose to eat them.0 -
I'd use "dry" as well but the USDA database and corresponding MFP entry use "raw":
Beans, black turtle, mature seeds, raw

Thanks a lot guys. Oddly I still could not find an entry that fits for me so I only logged the macros separately. It's crazy.
I now managed to get edible beans, btw. Soaking them 24hrs and cooking for over 1h. These are tiny beans, btw. The things you get in Brazil served with rice. They are delicious, but it's too much work cooking them.0 -

Probably because they are old.
I don't presoak black beans. They are done in 8-10 hours in the slow cooker (on Low, after bringing them to simmer on High.)
Mom soaks them overnight and then simmers them on the stove for 45 minutes.0 -

Thanks a lot. no slow cooker here: tiny kitchen, and heck, my home insurance doesn't allow appliances to run unsupervised. yeah, those beans are likely old. I was in Brazil in ... must have been 5 years ago, really. But anyway, I still got a delicious dinner out of it, if slightly chewy.0
