Soft Drinks lead to Flabby muscles

Oh those European Journals, darn, next they will be telling us Oxycodone is Addictive!

Sugar interferes with the metabolism. Oh dear , wish I had paid more attention to my biochemistry lectures, time for a re fresh course.
So Much for the advice on this board from those who tell me not to pay attention to sugar intake. Meanwhile out with the sugar and back to weight training.

http://blog.fooducate.com/2012/07/25/new-study-soft-drink-consumption-leads-to-flabby-muscles/

Doing our part to help “promote” the healthy sponsors of the Olympics starting this weekend, we bring you the results of an interesting study published by the European Journal of Nutrition. Researchers supplemented the diet of healthy, active men and women with a daily serving of sugary soft drinks. The results were nothing less than shocking:

Soft drinks changed the way muscles use food as fuel, making them prefer to burn sugars over fats.

The changes occurred rapidly, within just 4 weeks of consumption!

According to the lead researcher, Dr. Hans-Peter Kubis of Bangor University in England:

“This study proved our concerns over sugary drinks have been correct. Not only can regular sugar intake acutely change our body metabolism; in fact it seems that our muscles are able to sense the sugars and make our metabolism more inefficient, not only in the present but in the future as well.” Read more…

What regularly drinking soft drinks means: a metabolism change in your body that decreases its ability to burn fat!
Add this to a long list of reasons why soft drinks should not be a regular part of your diet, happy polar bears or not.

OP.... did you read the actual study with only 11 subjects?

    from the abstract
    Lightly active, healthy, lean subjects (n = 11) with sporadic soft drink consumption underwent a 4-week SSB supplementation (140 ± 15 g/day, ~2 g glucose/kg body weight/day, glucose syrup).

Please note the bold word. That's an extra 4/5 cans of coke a day.

Also as pointed out it is only on 11 people

Alarmist misleading blog post is alarmist. :noway:

Given all the research on sugar and Diabetes 2, now becoming a kids disease. I choose to error on the side of caution. My time/hours in the gym has to benefit me.

I am not taking any chances.

If it works for you, great, but you are posting non-credible articles incessantly.

My time in the gym benefits me, and I don't limit sugar.

Sugar causes so much damage to metabolism , is the culprit in the rise of diabetes 2, especially among the kids.

I AM THE ONE IN THE GYM LIFTING THE WEIGHTS, I CHOOSE TO ERROR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION AND KEEP THE SUGAR OUT.

I have removed large portion of the sugar from my diet, I like the taste of sweet and slip up once in a while, What I have focused on fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruits do not spike the insulin levels
I ate a healthy diet before , not too much fat . The culprit was the sugar.

Guess what, with the sugar gone, and out of my system, the weight is coming down very nicely.

I wont use artificial sweetners, just way too many unresolved issues around them. Since I am taking sugar out of my diet , and kick the sugar habit why stimulate my taste buds with questionable substitutes.

You reduced sugar, therefore reducing carbs and presumably calories and you lost weight...mind = blown.

Fruit will spike insulin. Fructose is sugar.

You're losing weight because you got your calories in line.

I have Pepsi Max, and 3 or 4 teas with 2 sugars every single day.

My weight is dropping, and with added protein intake, my muscles are doing wonderfully. In fact, I've never had muscles like this in my arm in all my life. My forearm is actually defined without me even flexing. Totally new for me.

Oh, and I tend to have a cookie or chocolate bar daily.

My sugar is hidden because I was sick of seeing the red numbers. But I can bet I'm probably 10s of points over a day, and I'm fine with that. I've cut down my sugar take by well over half. Used to have 4 sugars in tea, and up to 3 sweets a day, and full fat Coke / Irn Bru.

This is the first I've seen of that kind of article regarding sugar on here, and I don't like it. Its like reading a Daily Mail health blog. A load of b*llocks.

I thought there were far more studies that prove that a lack of exercise was the main cause of Diabetes. Go figure.

I have lost 312 lbs. never once tracking a single gram of sugar........... ever............ and I am Type 2 diabetic with A1c averaging 5.3 over the past 2 1/2 years..... You lost weight because you ate in a caloric deficit, and fresh fruits will most definitely spike insulin levels.
