    Sugar causes so much damage to metabolism , is the culprit in the rise of diabetes 2, especially among the kids.

    I AM THE ONE IN THE GYM LIFTING THE WEIGHTS, I CHOOSE TO ERROR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION AND KEEP THE SUGAR OUT.

    I have removed large portion of the sugar from my diet, I like the taste of sweet and slip up once in a while, What I have focused on fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruits do not spike the insulin levels
    I ate a healthy diet before , not too much fat . The culprit was the sugar.

    Guess what, with the sugar gone, and out of my system, the weight is coming down very nicely.

    I wont use artificial sweetners, just way too many unresolved issues around them. Since I am taking sugar out of my diet , and kick the sugar habit why stimulate my taste buds with questionable substitutes.

    Oh those European Journals, darn, next they will be telling us Oxycodone is Addictive!

    Sugar interferes with the metabolism. Oh dear , wish I had paid more attention to my biochemistry lectures, time for a re fresh course.
    So Much for the advice on this board from those who tell me not to pay attention to sugar intake. Meanwhile out with the sugar and back to weight training.

    Doing our part to help “promote” the healthy sponsors of the Olympics starting this weekend, we bring you the results of an interesting study published by the European Journal of Nutrition. Researchers supplemented the diet of healthy, active men and women with a daily serving of sugary soft drinks. The results were nothing less than shocking:

    Soft drinks changed the way muscles use food as fuel, making them prefer to burn sugars over fats.

    The changes occurred rapidly, within just 4 weeks of consumption!

    According to the lead researcher, Dr. Hans-Peter Kubis of Bangor University in England:

    [...]

    Ummm...Bangor University is in Wales, not England.

    Oh those damn alarmist websites. Next they'll be writing misleading articles with only partial facts on less than reliable studies.

    Yeah, if they can't even check their facts first to state correctly that Bangor University is in Wales not England, it rather skews their credibility.

    [btw...I'm an American and even I know that Bangor is in Wales, not England.]

    I have lost 312 lbs. never once tracking a single gram of sugar........... ever............ and I am Type 2 diabetic with A1c averaging 5.3 over the past 2 1/2 years..... You lost weight because you ate in a caloric deficit, and fresh fruits will most definitely spike insulin levels.

    ^^^^^^^ Definitely don't listen to this guy either!!!!! LOL. CONGRATS again :)

    You said Less Carbs in my diet, I have doubled the amount of fresh fruit, now even eat bananas and doublied the amount the veggies I eat daily.

    But with the sugar gone my weight is going down and down.

    I eat oatmeal for breakfast, whole wheat pasta and breads, Yes there is some sugar in these products, but I have cut all other sources out.

    And what just because a German philosopher made a quote 150 years ago, it does not mean that the quote is valid.

    If you are a personal trainer then you would be aware of high benefits of water and fresh fruit smoothies. Why not promote those?

    Probably because just like the rest of us, we have done our homework and have looked through all the peer reviewed studies and have seen that there is no harm in consuming said drinks, as long as you aren't drinking say 30+ cans a day everyday.....

    and no one here is saying not to drink water, it has it benefits too heck I drink over 100 ounces a day but there is nothing wrong with a few diet sodas everyday and it most certainly isn't going to regress anyone's weight loss or muscle building...

    Actually based on the Candian Diabetes association the leading cause of type 2 diabetes in Children is obesity...
    http://www.diabetes.ca/diabetes-and-you/youth/type2/

    a quote from their site (and I trust their research)

    The development of type 2 diabetes is closely related to obesity; about 95 per cent of children with type 2 diabetes are overweight at diagnosis. Given that the proportion of Canadian children who are overweight has tripled in the last 30 years, it is not surprising that incidence of type 2 diabetes among youth is rising.

    In addition to obesity, factors that increase a child’s risk for developing type 2 diabetes include:

    ■being a member of a high-risk ethnic group;
    ■having a family history of the disease (especially being born to a mother whose pregnancy was complicated by diabetes);
    ■having dark, velvety patches in skin folds (a skin condition known as acanthosis nigricans);
    ■having high levels of fat in the blood (dyslipidemia);
    ■having high blood pressure (hypertension); and,
    ■having polycystic ovarian syndrome (a disorder in females that is marked by lack of menstrual periods, unusual hair growth and excess weight).
    About half of all children with type 2 diabetes do not have any symptoms and are diagnosed only when screened for other disorders related to obesity. The Canadian Diabetes Association recommends screening for type 2 diabetes in obese children 10 years of age and older (or when puberty starts, if earlier than age 10) who have at least two of the risk factors noted above.

    Prevention
    note the only mention of sugar says to switch to diet soda or water....rest says eat less fat, eat healthy and exercise
    A healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In fact, studies in adults suggest that moderate weight loss and regular physical activity can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by more than 50 per cent.

    Try these simple lifestyle changes that can make a big difference in the health of your family:

    ■switch from regular pop to sugar-free pop or water;
    ■switch to lower-fat dairy products, such as 1% or skim milk;
    ■offer children healthy snack choices, such as fresh fruits and cut-up veggies;
    ■model healthy eating and activity habits for your children;
    ■leave the car at home; walk or bike whenever possible;
    ■gradually reduce screen time (television computers, etc.) and replace it with active play time. try a family walk after dinner; and
    ■follow Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide and Canada’s Physical Activity Guides for Children and Youth.

    Because it's not my place to. People aren't stupid. They know the benefits of water and fruit. Trying to force someone to comply doesn't work. It has to be on their terms. But I don't stand by while someone tries to use "bad" science to try convince people that they are going to get flabby muscles from drinking a can of soda. On a public forum you should be prepared to defend your stance with some legitimate sources from peer reviewed clinical studies (several purporting the same results help) that can be scrutinized and questioned.
    Answer this: If someone drank on can of soda a day, do you think their muscle would get flabby if they were consistent with exercise and ate the correct macro/micro nutrients their body needs daily?

    Thank you!

    Off topic: You could get someone to comply with a particular behavior if they believe that everyone else is doing it. Peer pressure is extremely influential in behavior modification. If you can drop a sentence or two along the line of, "Hmmmm, strange...all the rest of my clients are drinking a lot more water and eat at least 3-4 servings of fresh fruit a day. But good job on getting lots of protein!"

    The subtlety of the peer pressure will work on their subconscious. They will begin to wonder if "all the rest of your clients" know something they don't and the person will change behavior without even being consciously aware they are doing it.

    I study behavioral economics for fun. It's amazing how ofter marketers use peer pressure to influence buying decisions.
