@tarun_yadavA I honestly don't remember 😉 so I'm going to say it was pretty much normal. After a run I am never hungry...I have to force myself to eat a little something. But several hours later I am back to myself... needing to eat every few hours.
It's interesting to me but exercise DOES indeed depress my appetite. I now that I need to refuel after a longer run but sometimes it takes a couple days before the RUNGRY hits me and then I am all confused as to why I want to empty out the entire contents of the kitchen into my body. 😏😱 I do try to eat a steady cal rate every day because of these time lag type things but that's also hard to judge because I tend to not have a set plan each day for my runs either. I do love that most runners think of food as fuel and not some reward for exercise. It definitely turns things around in one's head. And it sort of drives me crazy when someone starts down the path of "exercise for more calories" like I had to go for a walk before bed because I was 200 over or something.
Edited to post my update. today felt colder to me at almost 50 than yesterday's 30's. But I think I was underdressed. It was also unexpectedly harder to do 4 as my legs were sore from the 8 yesterday. I can tell I haven't been putting in the miles as normally that would not happen. But it is supposed to warm up this week and looking forward to 80 again for tennis tomorrow. 😎6 -

@tarun_yadavA I also get reeeeeeaaaaalllllly hungry after a long run, sometimes with a major time lapse.
Immediately after I finish, I pretty much always eat something quite healthy with some protein in it- and I agree, food after a run always tastes especially delicious . But later on in the day or even the next day or two after longer runs, I find myself wanting to “refuel” all of the expended calories. I always find this to be a shame, because I wouldn’t mind losing another 5-10 pounds. But hey, it is what it is . I try to always bring a bunch of healthy snacks and lunch with me to work, so I am not tempted to grab anything in a wild rungry frenzy. I do usually keep some dark chocolate in my desk drawer for emergencies though .
After two days off, I was back at it today, with 10.3k incl. 8x 1min intervals. In between intervals, I did 3 minutes at recovery pace. I do worry about my form when I really pick up the pace, so I think I’m going to be integrating some form drills into my routine a couple times a week.
So far for February, I am 148.8/200km.5 -
I finished week three of this 16 week 5K training plan.
In March 2020 (peak covid reactivity) I developed a stress fracture in my right tibia. Being fit I thought: work from home? I am going to run five miles every day for lunch. I jumped right into those increased miles and about three weeks later I had to quit running.
My recovery plan was simple, sit, and eat until 2023.
After about a year I told my doctor this (on a zoom appointment) The doctor prescribed an X-ray, which showed thickening at the site of the initial pain. The doctor said "yes, you had a stress fracture last year that has healed up.)
This stress fracture was my first major running injury. I think about this as I've decided to start running again. Anyone else deal with a stress fracture?3 -
@tarun_yadavA - I have not run a marathon but many HM's (I know it's not nearly the same). The person who got me started and signed up for my 1st HM was a very experienced runner/marathoner. She told me after that 1st one to expect to need to 'refuel' for as many days as the miles in my race, so 13 days for a HM and 26 for a full. She also said to make sure to eat enough protein because it fuels the recovery of the damaged muscle fibers. I don't know that I paid that much attention to it but it did seem like my runger typically lasted about 2 weeks after a race.
I am also one who is rarely hungry after a run but had it hammered into me by a nutritionist, that I must eat something (good mix of protein and carbs) after a run. I usually have a smoothie or a protein shake and some carbs on the side.
@chris_in_cal - I don't use Garmin so no GarminConnect for me but there is a MFP group in Strava if you upload from Garmin there.
I had a metatarsal stress fracture in 2018. It took me mostly out of running for about 4.5-5mos before I could start ramping back up to my normal mileage. I was in a boot for ~2 months of that. The ortho doc told me to increase very slowly and if I felt any discomfort to back off. It took time but has no longer been an issue for me.
@Laurz9191 - love this expression 'in a wild rungry frenzy'! For whatever reason I visualize the Tasmanian Devil cartoon character spinning and eating everything in sight 😂
We took off to Anza-Borrego Desert state park on Thursday looking to hike a little and look for wildflowers. It was gorgeous weather, if a bit cool. We even hit snow and ice, surprisingly, on the drive there. There were cyclists on this crazy narrow steep highway and we couldn't figure out why they were weaving all over the road until we got closer and realized they were dodging the ice on the road. I took Hobbes for a short hike looking for wildflowers and then we drove out to some more remote, off-road areas. There were flowers but not the superbloom we thought we might see. We were a bit early and there may be more later in March. Hobbes was especially interested in the teddybear and barrel cacti and I couldn't get a picture of them without worrying he was going to stick his nose on them. None had blooms yet but had many buds that looked like they could open any day. I promised @SummerSkier some pictures and they are under the split below.
I was exhausted yesterday so didn't get out but today felt better and the weather was perfect. Right about 60F with a cool breeze so Hobbes and I walked a bit over 4.5 miles. Apparently feeling tired and having joint and muscle pain is common with shingles but I hope it goes away soon. I am already tired of it and want to get back to running!

Slot canyons - the perspective of the pictures doesn't really give a sense of how high I was above the canyons and how steep it was. I was getting dizzy and worried about slipping off the edge.8 -

@chris_in_cal I have not had a stress fracture, but I know a high schooler who did in both legs. Her mom and doctor think it was because she took off doing too much after having some time off from being sick. I would guess if you continue to build up slowly, not 5 miles a day right off, that you shouldn't have the same issue. Did you ask your doctor about your running plan? I hope you don't have any other issues.
@shanaber Looks like a great trip. I hope you can go back and catch some more flowers in bloom. I also hope you get to feeling better soon!
I did my normal Sunday Rest Day walk on the treadmill between church and lunch today. I walked 2.00 miles at 3.7 mph.

I ran 10 miles this morning. The temperature was ok, but it was windy and cloudy. I wore shorts and a t-shirt with sleeves for the first 2.5 miles. It was an uneventful run, but it is always nice to get a long run on Sunday.

@Laurz9191 @shanaber laughing at 'Rungry'. In my head, I'm picturing it as Scooby Doo saying it, muffling up words, then proceeding to stuff his face with food. Lol. Tasmanian Devil works too! My youngest said I was like Slimer from the Ghostbusters shoving trays of food down my mouth!
@shanaber think your friend might be onto something, with that number of days thing...
Typically, I walk at a weight of around 175-180 lbs ("Light Heavyweight" for those into Boxing/MMA). I consume 2500-3000 cals gross, and then there's the 700-900 I burn from exercise. Week before Marathon, I made it a point to run less that week, and up intake to around 3000-3500. We're now a week on (8 days to be precise), I haven't really done anything I'd count as 'long' (7 miles yesterday is the most), but body just seems to want 3000-3500 ALL the time regardless.
The other day - Did make the mistake of skimping on dinner, thinking 'no', 'I have eaten. This is enough', while still being peckish.... Should have eaten more, but nstead of eating the nutritionally-dense calories from dinner, I passed... By 11pm, couldn't sleep, ravenously hungry, then decided something sweet would be nice... And lo and behold, ate 3 snickers ice-cream bars 🤦🤦🤦.
So since, asked wife to get Dark Chocolate Lindt. That way, if I want more I know I will stop if I eat a square or two of that after. Not a massive fan, it's okay. But acts like a "stopper". Once you've gone Dark, and that too mint, can't eat say, white chocolate or caramel after that. Would taste too weird.6 -
@shanaber I think the Tasmanian devil describes it well. As I mentioned, I do my best to avoid being in this state . I really liked the pictures you posted. The desert landscape looks really beautiful. I imagine it's probably the best time of the year to visit.
Today I went on a 45 minute 7.3Km base run on the treadmill and did a mini strength training session afterwards. It was quite uneventful , but I was listening to a very captivating audio book, which made the treadmilling somewhat enjoyable. Tomorrow is long run day!

Partly cloudy, mid 40s F, with just a little breeze from the north and west. Right on the borderline between warm clothes and cool clothes, so I opted for shorts and short sleeves. FINALLY got my pace up to sleasy (between slow and easy), but I have to keep reminding myself that my pace times were calculated from race times when I was still racing. Saw a pair of mallards; heard a song sparrow, and thought I might have heard a bluebird, although it's early for bluebirds.6 -
@shanaber Deserts are so beautiful! I love it when you can find flowers blooming in a desert, like these little unexpected pops of color.
@tarun_yadavA It's hard for me to even wrap my mind around eating that much every day! I hit 2500ish maybe one day a week, even at the height of marathon training. Obviously I'm just a smaller person than you are, both in height and weight, but thinking about eating that much every day is tiring!
@chris_in_cal I have never had a stress fracture. I feel like I should knock on wood or something. The only running injury I have ever had was my recent Achilles tendinitis. Overall, I've been really fortunate so far.4 -

I use a garmin but have it automatically synced with strava, which is what I really use to track. Aside from my husband, you will be my first connection on garmin!2 -
I have been finding rail trails here for a while now in many places we have traveled to. So I was pretty excited to see an article about a project to link the rail trails together to create the Great American Trail! For those who haven't heard of the rail trails here, they are taking railway paths that are no longer used and converting them to biking, running, walking trails. This Great American Trail project links them so you 'could' run from Washington DC to the Olympic coast in Washington State! It is 3700 miles in total but how fun would it be to eventually run all of it even in pieces?

I did 8 miles this morning. Holy crap! This was the 1st early morning, before work run in many months, and it SUUUUUUCKED!!! First mile I thought I was going too fast, so looked at my watch to see what I was doing, and it said 10:45 pace! I slowed down anyway thinking that just couldn't be right, then the next mile was still almost 10:00. All the rest were 9:40 - 9:50, but I felt like I was pushing at least sub 9:00.
IDK, Temp was nice at 61, so not that. Maybe it was what I ate (never had avocado toast and egg before a run before), or maybe the shoes (it has been a very long time since I ran outside in the New Balance 1080v12's). Oh well, just add it to the list of bad runs and move on I guess.

@scott255 I swear there is something wrong with the GPS satellites in Tx early in the am. My runs in the morning are always sooooo much slower than if I run at lunch. I can even see a difference when we change the clocks.3

I used to live next to the Lancaster-Lebanon Rail Trail.
Best thing ever. Shady, smooth, 20 miles with almost zero intersections.
That is the only thing I miss about central Pennsylvania.

Jumping in to say the rail to trail things are super cool, we have a lot of the here in Spain and they're one of my favourite places for long easy runs that don't involve mountains or technical stuff. I actually ran a HM on one last May and loved it.5

@shanaber – that’s a gorgeous desert dweller you found out there. I love lupine. Some of the gardens in Ireland last year had beautiful varieties in bloom. Exploring the slot canyons in Utah was my favorite part of my trip out there last year. I love the idea of the Great American Trail project!
@chris_in_cal – I’ve yet to experience a stress fracture. Continuing to follow your 16-week 5K training plan sounds like a sensible approach to get back into running without an injury. I use Garmin to track my runs but am clueless about the connects.
@Tarun_yadavA – I could totally see Scooby getting rungry!

Today's plan called for intervals. I chose a treadmill workout. I walked a total of 1 mile for warm up and cool down. The run was 5 min at 4.2 mph, 8 x (1.5/2.5 min at 5.5/3.8 mph), 11:12 min at 4.2 mph. That resulted in 3.50 miles in 48:12 min for a 13:46 min/mile avg pace. Surprisingly, it didn't feel too bad. Avg HR was 127 with a max of 145 bpm.
