LESS Alcohol ~ APRIL 2023 ~ One Day at A Time

Yeah big fan of Utah here. I've only been once but it was a great trip. We stayed in Bryce but got out into surrounding areas, Dry Fork, Willis Creek, etc and did a lot of exploring and hiking. I want to hit Death Valley again next time, but I also want to explore more of Utah.
AF so far this morning haha...
-m5 -
Goal: AF - Sunday-Thursday.
Less than 3 drinks per day on Friday & Saturday.
Apr 3 - MON: AF ✅
Apr 4 - TUES: AF ✅7 -
LOL still in the state
The state of WA has to come and inspect and sign off on the new service panel. We found out yesterday they would be here sometime today. If they show up early we will hit the road. If it is afternoon we will leave in the am
Thank you all so much for the Utah suggestions, I have added those to my list of 'must see's'.
So today we will play tetrus and see what will fit in the car and what we have to edit out.
Bonus
we were going to donate our sofa and love seat (excellent condition btw as we rarely used them) but be the oldies we are we determined we could not get them down the flight of stairs......So........ DH will be cutting/slicing them up in the living room then we will load and take to the landfill instead. That is so sad.....
We had already decided we were starting fresh with a new look when we land somewhere. So moving forward. We did go out for lunch and a beer yesterday afternoon. The electrician had to come back yesterday to finish up. He did not leave until 2pm and we were hungry. I am ok with it.
Now the whole logging food --- I got away from it around November when I was doing the 12 week lifting challenge.....well that finished just before Christmas, I did not start logging again and now I am up past the 'danger zone' 1-5lb over goal---caution....5-10lb over --- get your act together...10+ danger zone. So guess this is an eye opener and I need to get back to it. .5lb -from get your act together.
lets see what tomorrow brings5 -
Very interesting trips.
I'm here, in part, because of a planned trip. A few weeks ago, my wife booked an all-inclusive for a few days. Being at a max weight ever and with about 12 weeks until departure, I was triggered to do something about it.
So far, I'm nine days without alcohol. I still haven't committed to going alcohol free the whole twelve weeks. Maybe with Sunday being Easter, I think I might have a couple glasses of chardonnay with the meal.
That won't be too diet friendly of a day. I've got planned Classic Deviled Eggs, Mediterranean Kale Arugula Salad, Moroccan Lamb Meatballs with Harissa, Garlic Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes, Roasted Lemon Pepper Asparagus, and for dessert, a colorful Baklava Cheesecake recipe that I'm going to try.6 -
Ready for April
4/4/2023
[Noted yesterday]I'm already claiming today as AF. Gotta get started and ignore the triggers.
Yeah! That worked....:) AF! Mental mind games. It's funny. Once you put your mind to it, it's fairly easy. When your mind isn't committed, is easy to waiver. I came home and immediately poured my substitute wine (Ocean Spray 5 calorie juice) and proceeded to cook dinner. My husband came in and out of nowhere said, lets have a shot of Maker's Mark. I said no thank you, but go right ahead. He didn't. Then later on in the evening we were watching Jeopardy and the final Jeopardy question comes on and he says...if I get this right, you have to take a shot. It was like the devil incarnate! I said no!
The Month recap to stay accountable4/1My 2023 Stats...
My plan starts/restarts tomorrow.... Mayo Clinic "diet" . Today wasn't so bad. Had 6 ounce filet and asparagus and two glasses of wine for dinner. I have only one bottle of wine left in my house and I don't plan to buy any more this month.....

Well.... the day was actually going well. I had a couple of breakfast sausage for breakfast (not the best choice but I haven't been shopping yet). For lunch, cobb salad and for dinner Chicken with a southwest salad. All meals accompanied by water! I made it until 8:30pm when my husband came home from work. He cracked open a beer and started recapping his negative day... so two glasses appeared .... bottle is almost empty🙂
4/3/2023
I skipped breakfast, considering IF again. if only to kick start some action. Good for lunch (leftover Chicken and Salad) and dinner was an airfried pork chop and broccoli. Husband turned on the NCAA championship game and make Pomegranate Sours. I had one and a half (about 6 ounces).AF = 1

@Missmay"SIGH" you should have seen his face when I turned it down . I told him he was going to have to drink this one tonight. And he did gladly. A save for me 💪
@GaryM_25That won't be too diet friendly of a day. What time is dinner? 🙂
My plans sound similar.
Kale Walnut Feta Salad
Roasted Red Potatoes
Lamb Chops
Crab & Bacon Linguine (New recipe I'm trying)
I didn't even consider dessert as I normally don't prepare....but I will add something.4 -
@forestdweller1
Oh, falafels!! Yummy. I haven't had those in awhile, but I love them. I have never made them from scratch, dried from a box or frozen over here. I grew up in Toronto where there are falafel places everywhere (and Roti shops).
Hindu people do drink alcohol, beer and whiskey. The last time that I actually ate in the Spice Hut restaurant with a friend we brought Proscecco which went quite well with the food.
@globalhiker
Oh my gosh, I am very excited about your fall trip!! It will be here before you know it.4 -
I am Dawn, I live in South Eastern British Columbia.
I joined this thread in November of 2018, a daily drinker at the time
My primary goal with drinking less is weight loss.
My usual goal is 16-20 AF days for the month,
I had 17AF days in March.
I do this diary style, I normally post the next morning.
Saturday April 1st - Drinks. Planned AF for Sunday. I will try to limit drinks to one weekday and weekends.
Sunday April 2nd - AF - Since I had resolved that it would be an AF day it was fairly easy. Just going to take it day by day this week on the A or AF front. If I could wait until the weekend for A that would be great.
Monday April 3rd - AF - I think that it might have been an A day with a light Tuesday, but I got a phone call and have a job interview today (Fenwick and Baker pub) after my Spice Hut job - so AF Monday night.
Tuesday April 4th - 2 drinks between 3:30 and 4:30 after my interview. The shifts that they are looking to cover are basically the same as I already work at Spice Hut, so I don't think that it will work out for me. I need a second job, not to replace the job that I already have. We'll see, they are going to talk about it and get back to me. Planned AF until Friday.
Rolling total: 2AF days out of 4 days.6 -
I didn't even consider dessert as I normally don't prepare....but I will add something.
Similar.
We only really do desserts for the holidays--Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. About the only desserts I care for are creme brûlée, tiramisu, raspberry dark chocolate cake, brownies with vanilla bean ice cream, bread pudding, tapioca pudding, strawberry pie, and pumpkin pie. Even with the weight gain of the last number of years, those desserts are reserved for but a few times per year. Anyhow, my wife likes cheesecake and this gorgeous recipe caught my eye.
Baklava Cheesecake
Alcohol has been my frequent pointless calories.6 -
That cheesecake looks absolutely amazing. I may give it a try as well. It's fun to try new things vs making the same things over and over again. I'm reviewing the recipe ....I've never purchased phyllo pastry or rose water...hopefully not to challenging to find at my local grocery. It says it should refrigerate over night....so I guess this is my Saturday project! Thanks for sharing.
And yes, same here, wine constituted my empty calories and I usually opted for the wine vs dessert.

...hopefully not to challenging to find at my local grocery.
And yes, same here, wine constituted my empty calories and I usually opted for the wine vs dessert.
I ordered next-day Amazon yesterday.
Indeed. I'd pick red wine as my empty calories. This is what I really, really am working to change.4 -
I'm just checking in to say how terrible I have felt all day after my 4 drinks last night. I slept terrible, had a headache since 9 pm last night, and it made parts of work simply miserable. So definitely AF tonight for me.8
-
@MissMay I totally missed the part of your history where you were a baker! How impressive!
@itladyee and @GaryM_25 You guys must be the holiday cooks in your families. I am, too. Also serving lamb chops but mostly because I recently discovered them in my Jenga freezer (looking for something else I lost in there). They're from MacKenzie, ltd. My parents love that place and my dad gave them to me. Seems like the prefect time to put them on the table. I'll start with cauliflower soup with "nests" of pesto with dyed pine nut "eggs" on top. It's kind of a new tradition that's amusing to
my family. Then individual souffles. Then the lamb, potatoes and green beans almondine. My stepdad sent "Easter Petit Fours" also from MacKenzie that I guess I'll serve for dessert. I'm not proud to admit to this group that my favorite part is the resurrection cocktail. I make them every year and really look forward to it.
Bit of LA role reversal in our house this week. Weekend was on the rails food & bev-wise until Sunday night when I opened a 2nd bottle of wine after dinner with stepdad. I own it. It was my bad, but DH drank appreciably more than he intended and mentioned it the next day. Then he went out for drinks with a work contact Monday night and Tuesday commented his anxiety was ramping up. He need look no further than the alcohol consumption, so I think he's motivated to adjust. "April Abstinence"... we were looking for something snappy and alliterative. We won't be abstinent (note aforementioned resurrection cocktail) but I will be a lot more careful for his sake if not for my own.5 -
@ahoy_m8 Yes, I am the primary holiday cook in the family. Weekdays and weekends, my stepdaughter and I do most of the cooking. My wife doesn't cook too much.
@MissMay Thanks for the confidence boost. I used to bake a fair amount when I had young children in the house but not much at all the last handful of years. (Sigh, sigh, sigh... It so much has been alcohol as the source of empty calories for me...)3 -

I so know what this is like. I'm trying to enjoy my clear headedness. And tea.
Hang in there, you're worth it!5 -
@MissMay way to run from the devil mango-Rita drink! How cool you were a baker! I love home baked everything.
@GaryM_25 you are doing great with your challenge and your family will be spoiled with your beautiful holiday meal. I agree having a clear mind with LA is refreshing.
@itladyee you won that Jeopardy game, way to go!
@dawnbgethealthy I'm sure you knocked your job interview out of the park! Hoping they can make some changes to bring you on somehow.
@lmlmrn sorry about the furniture that will not be going with you but a fresh new look is always something to look forward to.
@globalhiker great job on AF! Gotta have our chocolate too.

Hello LA community! I am Amanda, I’m from Michigan and excited for Spring to get here! This thread is my favorite bunch of people! I have been practicing LA since June ‘22.
My April goals are to be 99-100% AF,
continue healing from my cancer diagnosis and all the baggage from that and to work on my weight.
4/1: 1A
4/2-4/4: AF
4/5: AF
It’s hard to catch up on everyone’s posts and reply to them all! You all made me realize Easter is Sunday (I knew it was coming up but not an exact day) and makes me a little wistful that I’m not eating anything special.
I have been diligently weighing and logging this month and my weight has bounced around but I’m down a pound so hoping for more of that!
I am going for a free Reiki massage tonight offered at the cancer center. I have never experienced Reiki before so I’m excited to see what it’s like.
Hope you all have a great Thursday! It’s almost Friday!6 -
Hi All! Since joining this group Nov '22 I no longer drink on a daily basis. I'm drinking less for weight loss and overall health. Since I haven't lost weight, I'm changing my goal to 2 A-days weekly with a 2-drink-any-day limit. I usually post mornings.
Wed 4/5: AF - It's finally warm in eastern Virginia, but it's going to rain. I'm looking forward to a few days off. The next few days are going to be a challenge with food and drinks because we're heading out for a couple nights. My goal is only 2 A days over the next several.

@Womona I am right there with you sister. I start anti-estrogen therapy tomorrow and the side effects listed are horrifying. Weight gain is included. I have to take this to prevent cancer recurrence. Some women opt out of this treatment because the side effects are unbearable. I’m going to give it my all though! Fingers crossed for a smooth transition for you!
How long is the anti- estrogen therapy for? Hopefully it’s just temporary. So does that mean you can’t also eat soy or any other phytoestrogen foods? In the name of remaining cancer free, it’s worth it.
I just wonder, what to women with a family history of estrogen receptor cancer or blood clots do if they are in the throes of peri-menopause? If HRT is not an Option, what’s a girl to do???3 -
@forestdweller1 we moms never stop worrying. So sorry to hear about SIL#2, that’s rough. I hope he can get his meds, and that they work.
Tell ED to lock up her silver! Sounds like the evil stepsister is bad news.4 -
I'm convinced alcohol was a major contributor to weight. Starting from my highest weight ever, the scale told me I lost seven pounds my first week as a result of healthy eating, intense workouts, and no alcohol.
Wow, that’s amazing!!!! So simple, yet so challenging!!! You are a rock star!4 -
Just caught up on everyone’s posts!
@lmlmrn I’m so excited for you! What an adventure. Safe travels when you (hopefully) get to leave today!
2 AF days so far this week…. But I’m slowly easing into it by having a sip or two of whatever my husband and is drinking. I had a dinner to go to Tuesday night and had two huge glasses of wine. I should have just stuck to one. Planned glass tonight but that will be it.
For those who celebrate, I hope you have a joyous Passover!
As for Easter, this is the first time in about 30 years we are NOT either hosting or attending a huge extended family gathering. DS#2 isn’t even coming home for Easter, so me, Hubby and DS#1 are just having bagels and lox after church, and will cook a normal dinner. With (planned) Mimosas. Nothing special or fancy. It’s kind of nice not having the pressure to be somewhere or get the meal prepared or the house in order. Certainly nice to not have to fight traffic!
Spring has sprung in the Philly suburbs, it’s so beautiful. I need to get outside to hike and bike again. I’ve recommitting to going to the gym 3 times a week for strength. Whether I want to or not!
Now that USTA spring season is upon us, I’m on two teams so hopefully will get court time on at least one of them a week. Plus my weekly drill. Oh and I signed up for a weekly in-house tennis league that starts in May and lasts 7 weeks. So I’ll have plenty of exercise.
As for logging, I’m on and off with it. I usually eat the same thing all the time, and get lazy with logging after lunch. It’s the meals out and parties with heavy appetizers that I tend to not log. But, dammit, it works when I stay on top of it!
Looking back at my weight, it’s been creeping up and up for the last 3 years, but only a little. I wonder how much of that is peri menopause, and how much is muscle mass. All I know is that the only time I met my weight goal, I had Covid and could only eat about 3 calories per day. So clearly my weight goal needs to be bumped up a little. So instead of a goal of 128 (up from 125) I’m going to set it to 130. I’m 137 now. Fingers crossed.
Hope everyone has a great day. Know that I’m rooting for you all with your goals, and your struggles. Love this group!!!

@RockinRobyn672 The hormone therapy is 10 years. I’ve been on it for 4 damn days. My cravings for sweets are through the roof. I’m usually a carbs/salt girl. I haven’t given in but chocolate is always on my mind now. I’m aware of the dietary concerns but no one (oncologists) has brought that up. It is not on my prescription paperwork either. I read a little bit about soy on the Mayo Clinic site and it basically said to not worry about it, that new studies show it doesn’t matter. I can get an appointment with a nutritionist, now you’ve got me thinking….
I took birth control pills for 36 years (!) before my hysterectomy. I REALLY did not want children and I stupidly and blindly followed my obgyn’s recommendations. He wouldn’t tie my tubes even though I asked at every annual appointment. I can go down a pretty deep rabbit hole trying to figure out why I got cancer. As far as being high risk, I have a friend who is high risk and she started getting MRI mammograms at age 35 and has done genetic testing. She will likely get a prophylactic double mastectomy at age 40.
Up until about age 35 I never gave hormones a second thought but they drive so much of what goes on in our bodies, especially as we get older. Are you high risk?6 -

I opted out of HRT (afraid of breast cancer and the other side effects), but really felt like I couldn't function with the perio/meno. Especially being a people facing worker with soaking wet hair and clothes and a red face every couple of minutes.
I went into the local health food store just a mess.
What I eventually ended up with was Estroven, and I stayed on it for 2 years, no longer noticing much more than 2 or 3 flashes per day, night sweats were gone.
However, the proprietor gave me many choices, having come out the other end of it herself. Some were even guaranteed or money back. They are all a mixture of natural herbs, so they take 5-7 days to take effect unlike chemicals.
As for weight gain, you really are not that far off from where you want to be.
I gained a great deal of weight during the whole perio/meno long phase of life, as did many of my friends. It does seem to fall off afterward with a bit of work. LA helped immensely, but also hormones normalizing.
So fun that you are gearing up for your tennis season : - )

Wednesday April 5th - AF - Picked up a couple of extra shifts for Wednesday and Thursday dinners, so was home later than usual. Knowing that I have the same schedule for Thursday made it easy to stay AF Wednesday night. Lots of garden centre (temporary) jobs posted, but they pay very little and take place at the same time that I already work where I make tips which really raise my hourly wage. Still looking. Like @joans1976 I am on my own with all of the expenses of home ownership, so I really can't work a minimum wage job without going into deep debt while working 40 hours per week. It hasn't been a week yet since Foster Grant ended. I will find something for sure.
Rolling total: 3AF days out of 5 days.4 -
Last night, I had saved up enough calories to go out for a salad poke bowl with my wife. Like the other few favorite yet affordable places my wife and I would go out to on weekdays, this poke restaurant doesn't serve alcohol. Often during the week, I had no interest in a cocktail or glass of wine with dinner out because I had already drunk some during the day. I often ate a larger portion, often because it "didn't matter."
Now, I found it easier to just enjoy the meal and to be satisfied with less of a portion.5 -
Ready for April
4/5/2023
Weird day....as far as alcohol was concerned. I've been going to a place to get my nails done for over 15 years. My nail tech use to tell me to relax as my hands would be quite rigid while we would attempt to do my manicure. I use to tease that they should sell wine, that would relax me. Yesterday I went to get my eye brows waxed, nails and pedicure done. While getting my eye brows done, the tech says, would you like a glass of wine? I looked at her like she had two heads. She said, we have cabernet or moscato.... I politely declined. She continued that I could sip while getting my pedicure done. I declined again. Then when getting my pedicure done, my regular guy asked again. I just chuckled and said no thanks. I had received message late Monday from my friends son that she was in the hospital (she's 84). I tried calling Tuesday day and evening and left a message. I missed his call again but he didn't leave a message. When I got home, I tried again and got the message that his voice mail box was full. So that left me a bit concerned and put me in a solemn mood. I poured my substitute wine and air fried some catfish for dinner. It just wasn't doing it, so I finished that bottle of wine (not quite two glasses). Now here comes the weekend as I'm off tomorrow for Good Friday.
When all is said and done and I get annoyed for not staying AF, I have to give myself credit that I am continuing to limit alcohol and not drinking nearly as much. And I can see the difference with the reduction. Glad I found this group.

@ahoy_m8 ~ I'm the cook period!🙂 We are empty nesters ... my husband doesn't cook. Every once in a while, after much encouragement from me, he might make something! I tried making lamb chops a year ago. I was afraid of "messing" them up. I used the grill setting on my ninja air fryer and found a great recipe for seasoning them and they were quite tasty!
