Becoming more by becoming less

Hi to you. I'm here for professional help in losing weight. I'm 6'0 and now 208 and recovering from a small stroke 2 years ago. I'm able to work and generally doing great. I was always healthy till this but now seem to be back, YEAH! Let's see how this goes. Tell me about you and your journey.

    Hello, and welcome!

Mostly, you won't find professionals here in the MFP Community, just regular people like yourself. (MFP's blogs do have advice from experts/professionals, and of course professionals were involved in developing the app in the first place.) But regular people may be more help than you'd expect.

My journey? Gotta admit, I don't usually think of it as a journey. It's just life, and life is made out of time . . . the question is how we spend that time.

I was very sedentary and in a high-stress job until I got cancer (shortly after becoming a cancer widow) in my mid-40s. As part of recovery, I became much more active: I realized I needed to work on my physical condition if I ever wanted to feel strong, energetic, even happy again, after going through diagnosis, surgery, 6 months of chemo, 6 weeks of radiation. Luckily for me, I eventually stumbled over something I love so much I'd do it even if it weren't good for me. I gradually started training pretty hard regularly, even competing as an athlete (not always unsuccessfully, in age group terms).

But I stayed fat, class 1 obese much of the time, for another dozen years. Finally, at age 59, I realized I was lying to myself that being active/athletic was enough to be healthy. I wasn't healthy (though probably healthier than if I'd been inactive and fat). I had high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, and more. Luckily, I found MFP, and was able to lose down to a healthy weight in just under a year, and have been at a healthy weight since for 7+ years, now age 67. The MFP tools, and perhaps more importantly the information and support I found in the MFP Community here, have been hugely valuable to me. Reaching a healthy weight not only turned around all those health problems I mentioned, it had numerous other quality of life benefits, including some I never could've imagined. So worthwhile!

I'm cheering for you to achieve all your health goals, too!
