“ Sean Gibbons, a microbiome specialist and assistant professor at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, said the new study was striking because it indicates that people could lose weight and body fat simply by switching to a diet that targets their gut microbiomes, even without exercising more or cutting back on calories.”

This is something that's been known for a while, fiber "traps" a certain number if calories as it goes through your intestines, and then you poop those calories out. It's part of what makes fiber beneficial.0 -
Click bait.
Another science writer, this time from the Washington Post that takes liberties and confuses people with basic science that is well know. Yes the PhD's in this study and their finding do add to the total body of work (data) on the microbiome, but then our science writer sensationalizing it by starting out saying things like "For weight loss, whether you feed your gut microbiome high- or low-quality calories makes a difference, a new study suggests" and "For years scientists have believed that when it comes to weight gain, all calories are created equal." This will definitely confuse people believing somehow if we eat certain foods the microbiome will reward us with special powers of weight loss.

I wouldn't necessarily call not absorbing all the nutrients in a particular food a benefit. Context is important.0 -

Very true. If you need those calories, not so great. Good point.0
