Fellow machinists using MFP, what operations do you perform in your shops and how do you translate those actions to exercise? I'm trying to come up with an honest, accurate estimate of calories burned doing different activities such as running a lathe, a mill, loading, and unloading heavy materials. There are some online resources that provide approximations, but the work that tradespeople do is very diverse and hard to pin down from a fitness perspective. Any leads on information or tips from personal experience would be greatly appreciated. I hope this discussion helps other folks better understand their fitness.
As an example, I run a Haas TL2 for about 8hrs. daily. Depending on my workload I may tighten and loosen the chuck 50 times in one day. Then there's loading bar stock and changing tools on the post occasionally. It's a complex combination of motions and I'm unsure how to quantify the calories burned, generally, from putting in a day's work.
