TIPS & OBSERVATIONS FROM OUR USERS:
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
•Getting Started or Starting Over.
•Some people find it easier to set small attainable goals at the beginning to help boost confidence.
•If you have been drinking daily the first days will be some of the hardest and drinking again will feel like a cure but it delays the relief that only time can provide.
•There will always be a reason to delay the start/restart of your journey.
•For those ready to commit to being alcohol-free permanently, the videos on YouTube by Craig Beck will help. He also has a program you can join.
•You may experience mood swings and anxiety during your first two weeks. It is suggested you try and focus on the benefits of your goal.
•Cravings are said to last only 6 minutes, so find something to distract you like arming yourself with alternatives: tea, mock-tails, activities, etc.
•You may find that filling the time you drink with other activities like exercise or hobbies can be a helpful distraction.
•If you find them tempting try and avoid events/outings that will have drinking for a time.
•Don't let pride or shame keep you from asking for the help you need.
•Sometimes talking it out or posting your thoughts/feelings/struggles may help you work things out for yourself.
•It is okay that you don't always have all the answers.
•Some days will be easier than others.
•You may have initial/increased sugar cravings.
•You should never take a day that you have lived up to your goals for granted.
•Celebrate the smaller victories too. Less alcohol is still less alcohol even if your goal was zero at that moment.
•Once you begin sticking to your goals for one day to many days you should believe you are capable of the same and more because you are.
•Failure is not giving in and drinking. Failure is to stop trying to accomplish your goals.
•Annie Grace (This Naked Mind author) has a free program on her website (https://www.alcoholexperiment.com/) called the 30 day experiment which can be joined anonymously.
Life with Less Alcohol:
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
•It can be helpful to educate yourself with books and web research (Some suggested books and links listed below).
•There is no benefit to comparing yourself to others because this is a personal journey.
•You may often feel conflicted. You will know that there are numerous real benefits to sticking to your goal while at the same time think that alcohol is an important part of stress relief, relaxation, celebration, etc.
•You may feel punished by not drinking or drinking less but that feeling usually fades with time.
•Sometimes drinking less or quitting will strain friendships that centered around alcohol.
•Having a list of reasons to stick to your goals handy for yourself can be helpful. Some lists have included remembering how bad it feels to have a hangover, excess/unwanted calories, having a racing heart during the night, sleeplessness, anxiety, and depression.
•It is a good idea to have a plan for how you might deal with various tempting scenarios before engaging in a social situation.
•Self-Reflection is an important part of the journey. Once we figure out why we drink we can hopefully use that information to form new habits and make better and more mindful decisions.
•Sometimes doing something nice for yourself like a little reward for a success makes the journey easier.
•You will see many helpful suggestions and ideas that work for some people. However, finding what tactics work for you may involve some trial and error.
•It is not uncommon for certain activities that were once combined with alcohol to trigger temptation. Many have said that outdoor activities in warmer weather made alcohol very tempting.
•Many that have spent time with no alcohol after drinking again realized that it doesn't enhance experiences like they once believed it did. Some have said they no longer like the taste.
•Don't forget how sticking to your goal has made your life better and remember it to motivate you again if you fall off your path.
•If you begin drinking daily again whether planned like a vacation or unplanned you may once again face a struggle to get it under control.
•For some people it is easier to not drink than it is to moderate drinking. Others have found moderating impossible.
Reported Benefits of Less or No Drinking: (Results may be incremental, and/or they may vary)
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
•Improved sleep after 2,4,7,10,& 60 days
•Improved skin/complexion after 10 days
•Improved ease in weight loss. Not only from the savings of alcohol calories but some report making poor food choices after drinking.
•Increased energy after as few as 2 days
•Increase in other fun activities. Some have found that daily drinking became their main recreational activity and their world was decreased in size.
•Increased productivity
•Reduction of high blood pressure
•Lower resting heart rate
•Less Acid Re-flux
•Significant financial savings
•More creativity
•More productivity
•Better relationships with family
When Alcohol Is Used for Avoidance:
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
•We drink to ease the stress of the working day, to avoid it.
•We drink to avoid anxiety in social situations.
•We drink to avoid making decisions about not drinking.
•The Takeaway on Avoidance, our problems don't go away if we avoid them. We need to learn to face them.
•Having a clear head makes our problems seem much smaller.
•Having a clear head makes problems easier to solve.
How to Be Kind to "Tomorrow You":
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
•Instead of lumbering with guilt, headaches, and poor nutrition hangovers in the morning, Think of think how nice it would be not to feel that way tomorrow.
•Worry about "me" and don't let "tomorrow Me" feel awful.
•Instead of thinking alcohol is something nice to have *now*, think of *NOT drinking* as something nice we can do for the person we are when we awaken in the morning.
•Do you bank calories for a festive occasion? (Handy tactic) We can bank a good mood for when we wake up.
•We need to have sympathy for "Tomorrow You" and be kind to her/him.
•Don't look at a day without alcohol as a punishment for being bad or having no willpower.
•Not drinking is a lovely, sympathetic gesture towards the person we are now, and whom we will wake up as.
•You’d be kind to a stranger. Be kind to "Tomorrow You".

Hey Hey, thank you Miss May!5
-
@MissMay 👏 😻
This is the month that I climb out of my rut, leaving behind the bad habits. Now where did I leave that ladder ??
8 -
Thanks @MissMay for the new thread!
Less is more they say…..I’m ready (I think)!
I have a big vacation coming mid-month so in order to set myself up for success I will be relaxing my total goal ever so slightly.
August goals: 19-21 AF days3 -
I'm in for August and YES, this is the month to get out of the rut
I started yesterday to get a head start. 24+ hours AF.
My goal is to keep going AF as long as I can.
Let's do this!8 -
Thanks @MissMay, as always for starting the new thread!
I think I've been away for 2 whole months but I'm back. I've really missed everyone and am looking forward to catching up. I met my less alcohol goals in June, but not July (a very hard month for many reasons, the biggest being the loss of my dearest mother-in-law).
I am drinking less for overall health and weight loss. I usually post the next morning. My LA goals for August are no more than 4 drinks (5 max) in a week, no more than 2 in a day. The plan is AF tonight.

@RockinRobyn672 so sorry for your loss of
a very special mother in law. I know this group is here to support you.
It was great to read the last posts of July and new initial posts here - such a variety of goals listed for August. Here we go!
I joined this thread in Feb 2023 and try to check in several times a week for my own accountability and to learn from everyone else. I do LA for so many reasons but a healthier lifestyle (sleep, energy) with good habits is #1 and of course weight loss.

DH and I got to sail yesterday, and it was the PERFECT sailing day! Nice brisk wind, it was awesome.
Had a glass of wine with dinner last night at the marina- dining out on the restaurant deck, overlooking the River. Sounds delightful, right? Ugh, they served it in a plastic drink cup! Like what you’d serve soda in. Had I known I would have ordered something else. The glass really does matter! Every dockside marina serves their food in those plastic to go clamshells and plastic cups. Must be a town ordinance or something against glass. Give me a real dish, people!!
I got to speak with DS1 last night. He comes home Saturday from his 8 week-long Army officer training. I cannot wait to see him! Then he moves out a week later. *snif*. I’m happy for him but it isn’t the same without him around.3 -

Oh I am so with you on the plastic cup!!! I hate, hate, hate drinking wine from a plastic cup! I think it does have something to do with outdoor dining. I won't drink wine out of plastic. So bad for the environment as well.3 -
Day one with no booze yesterday.
I was drinking around 300 to 500 calories per day. I put on 15lbs in one year and the spark has been ignited to clean-up my health...
My goal is to loose 30lbs to get back to my normal weight. range.
I feel 100% better today and wish I would have started earlier...8 -
Welcome to August my LESS alcohol friends, I am so happy to see the posts coming in. I know the Summer months can be a challenge with trying to enjoy what the nice weather offers us.
My July accountability went wel
7 drink days
25 non drink days
There were several drama or stress related days that I tackled by NOT drinking. YAY.
Last evening I hosted a birthday bash at my house for my husbands Uncle. The Uncles Son's family was in our state and they were invited to come. What a breath of fresh air this side of my husbands family is. No drama, no relative bashing, no heavy drinkers. it was perfect!
Goals for August. Not to go overboard on my soon upcoming 8 days in Maui. I want to rent a car to get around so my husband will not try to get me to "relax" and drink because we can take taxi's or ubers.
Ok, off to my new job.
August 1st AF
(but had too much cake, LOL)

Hi All! Robyn here in VA Beach. I am drinking less for overall health and weight loss. I usually post the next morning. My goals for August are no more than 4 drinks (5 max) in a week, no more than 2 in a day.
Tue 8/1: AF - The weather has been cooler, in the low 80s this week. The run/walk before dinner wasn't too hot. Had a 0.0 St. Pauli Girl with dinner. These NA beers are slightly too "sweet" for my taste, but they'll do in a pinch. They're all I have in the house right now.
Rolling Total: 1 AF Days out of 17 -
Welcome newcomers! This long established thread is full of caring and supportive people, glad you are here.
August goals=continue summer exercise plan, go on vacation and maintain weight, or lose a pound by Labor Day. Just no gain!
August LESS alcohol goals=wine 2 x a week has been working for me for awhile. So, keep it up and choose lower A content (7-11%) occasionally and keep to 2 glass limit.
Totals:
AF Days - 1 out of 1
A - 03 -
2- AF so far3

AF first 2 days in August. All change takes work and it's not easy and I usually don't sleep great but it is what it is and yes I feel edgy but it will pass.
I accept the fact that motivation is sometimes just not there for me when I need it and I need to be smart enough to seek it. Normally, my motivation comes from running outside but it's too hot and when that happens my battery level drops to very low.
I'm going to in-person Weight Watchers this weekend again for a motivation boost, because it does help my motivation overall since the leader is good. I wish for you all to re-charge where you can and find where to get the boost you need.

Cheers with water everyone!
August
AF = 2 days
A = 1 (one shot with my family to celebrate 34 years of marriage)
This month I have 1 wedding and a 50th B Day party to attend. This will be the real challenge, but I am determined to get through it. Never been to a wedding where I didn't drink. This will be interesting... lol
Even though it's only been 2 days AF I feel more way more energetic and am sleeping much better. I am actually finding it to be not too difficult to be AF.5 -
Hi All! Robyn here in VA Beach. I am drinking less for overall health and weight loss. I usually post the next morning. My LA goals for August are no more than 4 drinks (5 max) in a week, no more than 2 in a day and at least 16 AF Days.
Tue 8/1: AF
Wed 8/2: Drinks (2) - Perfect weather so we rode bikes to the boardwalk after dinner, listened to a great band (where I broke from my plan an ordered an Orange Crush), then hung out on the pier until 11 p.m. watching folks catch fish. It was a late but very fun night out. I had a beer once we were back at home. I stuck to my no-more-than-2-drinks goal but AF was the original plan for the day. Then later, I fell into old habits - stayed up until 1:30 watching TV and late-night snacking. ... Thu 8/3: It was hard to get out of bed his morning! Goals for today are 1 drink, since I had a beer on Monday (7/31), and no late night snacking.
Rolling Total: 1 AF Day out of 24 -
@xbowhunter you have a great attitude thus far. Better sleep and energy are definitely benefits of LA.
I typically post the next morning for the previous night (not a day drinker). Had wine last night after a busy start to the week but didn’t measure the new rose. Saved the other half for the weekend.
Having a barbecue tomorrow evening with adult kids and elderly mom so I bought plenty of NA cold options (Trader Joes has some tasty low cal organic lemonades and sparkling water options). Also have one bottle of white wine available for my mom. In the past I would make sure we had several bottles on hand and I would dig in. Family ya know can do that to us. Those days are behind me as I practice LA and stay mindful and active.
August totals:

@sarah7591 @Womona ....Just a comment on plastic cups for wine on the dockside...I figured that was because patrons in that arena were a bit more relaxed and exuberant, and *kitten* happens when you're cracking crabs. I would smuggle in a well wrapped wine glass and immediately pour my beverage into MY glass. The servers never seemed to notice.
Broken plastic injures fewer patrons than broken glass, so I see the restaurant's POV.4 -
MFP is not helping my quest for tracking "less" calories. My dietary goals are focused on more potassium [heart], more dairy [76 y/o bones], and plenty of protein. After entering my veggies, leafy green stuff, and at least 60 grams of protein...MFP won't accept my daily entry because I'm too far under my 1200 calorie goal. And, no, I'm well into the "good " zone with all those pesky things like vitamin C and iron...Guess I should ignore the MFP Nanny and just watch my scale go down. When 20 pounds disappears, it won't matter anyway.
Day 3 with no 🍷 and not pretending it's a happy thing. It's a healthy thing.

HAPPY FRIDAY LESS alcohol peeps
August, well, in like a lion for sure for me.
Made reservations last night to attend a Maui luau when we are on vacation in 2.5 weeks. I was all good until she mentioned all inclusive, meaning as she put it TOP SHELF booze is free. Oh no, my husband heard that on my speaker phone and I can already see the scenario unfolding in my head. UGH
Luving everyone's goals for August. KEEP STRONG7 -

Thu 8/3: Drinks (2) - The goal originally was one drink, since I had a beer on Monday (7/31). What actually went down ... Two drinks instead of the one but still consider it a win since this was date night and not only did we go out for dinner, but also hung out at a local bar/music venue where a favorite band was playin. I had a glass of wine with dinner, then an IPA later at the bar. The win of the day: I had a Virgin Cape Cod (club soda & cranberry) after the beer. The plan now is AF though the weekend. I'm on my own for the weekend. DH is heading out for an annual "mancation" weekend in the NC mountains with our oldest son and friends.
Rolling Total: 1 AF day out of 3

@RockinRobyn672 Mancation Good on ya for keeping it to 2 with multiple destinations on a date night. I'd put that in the "W" column.
@womona YAAAS on the plastic cups. I've gotten snobby in my old age or something, but I enjoy is so much less in plastic, it's almost not worth the calories to me. So happy you got the perfect sail day. August is the one month my club stops sailing. No wind and HOT. We do race all the way through winter, though, and it can be blustery but it can also be nice.
@xbowhunter Happy anniversary and congrats on 34 years!
@MissMay Lol at the all inclusive dinner. At least it isn't the whole 2.5 weeks! I couldn't tell if your dismay was DH or self oriented (I suspect DH). I have long since resigned myself to the fact that all-you-can-eats/drinks are never "a good deal" for me. Ever. So why try to "get my money's worth"? It won't happen so I let it go and enjoy being the size I am.
AF M-Th so far this week. After toying with the idea of adding Sunday's to weeknight abstinence, but never actually deciding to do it, I have decided to give it a go in August since I won't be shaking up margaritas for DH while we have the smoker going. [ETA DH is doing AF August, which is my impetus]
Aug goal:
Su-Th AF
F&Sa half strength drinks (spritz's, frescas, and LA wine) [not tempting to DH]

Goals for August!Self-care and positive vibes ~ One day at a time
Zig-zag calorie count - Daily Average 1400
Success = No more than two glasses of wine per night.
Current Streak - AF = 0~
So July was a bust.... finished the month with my "glamping" trip which was fun, but actually turned into "camping" as we were without power and water for almost 24 hours after a bad storm came through.
Struggling in the first few days of August. All I want to do is eat and drink...not a good combination, especially with my desired goals.
I'm somewhat of an emotional wreck while processing a lot of information.

The Month recap to stay accountable8/1 ~ 🍷🍷 Husband mad at me because I said that he wasn't taking care of health.
8/2 ~ 🍷🍷Husband went to visit his daughter and mother so I had the evening to myself. I got dinner from Portillo's, got chocolate cake (and I really don't like cake). Watched the Bachelorette, ate my Italian sausage and only had two bites of the cake and threw the rest away.
8/3 ~ 🍷🍷🍷 Had good intentions. Was going to make salmon and a salad, try for 2 glasses of wine and relax. Instead, had a craving for Popeyes, didn't really feel like cooking, so I had Popeyes and 3 glasses of wine. It's kind of ironic that I was talking about my husband and now I'm going down that slippery slope.....

@itladyee ...am currently stuck near top of ladder, but you are welcome to my climbing gear .... 🧗♂️
Oven roasted veggies [zuchinni-onion-tomato-mini sweet peppers] and fish with AF beer.
@MissMay ...went on a memorable cruise with all 3 daughters and now-ex drunk SIL...wine, beer, mixed drinks all included. Four of us kept to one drink a night, and one of us kept to drink all night. He's a happy drunk, hanging off the balcony, singing to the fishes at midnight.
Hoping only the luau is "all-inclusive"3
