I get annoyed when different facets of life ask for 100% effort. My family is more important than my diet, and I will likely go to my Aunt's and overeat for Easter. But I can minimize the damage.
I am more of an eat and forget type than an all diet all the time type. Like Gretchen Rubin and others have said, habits are the key ( for me).

When I lost weight in 2015, it was a 100% effort. For 15 weeks, I never went over my calories and I lost 15 kg.
The great thing was that when I figured out what I could eat and how much exercise I needed to get, I just simply continued to eat and exercise ... and I could put it out of my mind. It was under control. Even on holidays and celebrations, I stuck to my calorie limit.
I went on to focus on my job and university.
But it is definitely harder when there's something emotional we need to focus on.
M in Oz
Further on the barrier that emotions present ... prior to my husband's accident it was much, much easier to exercise.
We met while exercising, on a long, long distance bicycle ride. We got to know each other while exercising. Cycling together is what we do. We have cycled individually occasionally, but mostly together.
After my husband's accident, he couldn't cycle for a while and since he has started cycling again but not nearly the distances or speeds or over the terrains we used to cycle. I could have gone out on my own and continued to cycle, but I didn't. And now I'm as out of shape with my cycling as he is. Only, I want to cycle, and he's kind of iffy about it, so we don't. I could cycle on my own ... but the whole thing is fraught with emotion. If I say I'm going for a ride whether he accompanies me or not ... emotions, all kinds of emotions. So I don't bother.
I do walk at lunch or when he is napping because I can do that on my own and it doesn't present the same emotional response in my husband. But if I want to go for a walk after work, he feels like he should come with me, but doesn't really want to and so ... emotions. So I don't bother.
It's been difficult, it makes me sad, and I haven't been sure what to do about it. I'm just happy whenever I or we do get out and exercise.
Machka in Oz
All that said ...
I got out for a beach walk this afternoon while my husband was napping.
And then we went for a 16.3 km bicycle ride!!! That is our 4th bicycle ride this year, and the longest one we've done this year.
Celebrating and thankful for that!

mfp community has been acting weird this evening. Something called "vanilla" is reporting server timeouts, but able to get right back in. Hmm.
Later, lighter, lovelies!

Good morning ladies!
It's a bit early, but I'm awake. Mostly. I'm trying to read my phone in the dark without waking Teddy.
Yes functional fitness is very important. I need to be able to stand all day to go back to work. So I need to pump up my walking. But I have at least six months to get ready while I study.
Lisa you might try a habit tracker calendar. There's a sense of achievement seeing all the green days.
Machka so sorry the long distance cycling had to end. But you are doing so well at the stair climbing, you must be in great shape.
Rita twenty bucks a month is a lot for me right now, and I get plenty of info from the free version. I use the free version of Duolingo and solitaire, too.
And I just discovered the free version of I heart radio, which has lots of ads, but that's the deal. I prefer my music radio style, where someone else does the choosing, instead of making me
assemble and rotate playlists. I was using the free version of Amazon Music but I kept hearing the beginning of each playlist over and over. So I heart radio is much better.
The only subscription I pay for right now is my dating app, and that's kind of a bust. The interesting guys don't live around here. So I won't renew, if I can catch it.
Dad has a doctor's appointment today. We should find out if his thyroid dosage is right. The doctor is leaving the practice, so we might switch. If I remember correctly, the new guy has an accent that was hard for me to understand.
Have a lovely day, my friends!

Yes the forum software is wonky today. Save early, save often!

Just bought an easel from Amazon. I've not painted on an easel before, but I can learn. It takes up to A3 paper. I usually use A4, but I do stray into A3 territory sometimes. It arrives on Thursday, so I will have to improvise today.

Thank you ... but unfortunately, I'm not even back up to 25 flights a day yet after the COVID situation. I managed 18 flights 2 days last week, so hopefully I'll be doing 25 flights 4-5 days a week by the end of this month. I need to be doing that in order to lose weight.
Meanwhile, I'm also focusing on walking more at lunch rather than just browsing the shops. Probably better for me and my budget.
And we're working on another plan.
Life is a series of plans often involving thinking outside the box.
And regarding functional exercise, I have been walking (and sometimes cycling) to run errands for most of my life. I'm not keen on using a car if I can help it ... I'd much rather travel by human power.

Vicki, Barbara, abd Rita Happy Belated Birthdays!
Stoves- I had Gas ones until met current DH. His was electric. We finally switched to gas and I am happier cooking! Mine is a Maytag. I rarely use the center griddle and normally only use one burner. My only complaint is the oven temp seems off. One of these days will get a thermometer and figure out how much off it is. I love the fast preheat feature.
It has been a rough mental month so far. I will catch you all up later. Must get ready for work.
Much love and thankfulness for all of you!

Good morning all:
Sitting here catching up on reading while everyone is sleeping. Family arrived safely Saturday afternoon. Got beds arranged when back to house. DS and DIL in larger room with GS on mattress in there. GD in my room on mattress between my bed and dresser. It all works out. Had dinner with other son, DIL and GD on Saturday evening. Yesterday was surprised lunch for DS. Step son and family came so I had all of the grandchildren together.
Afterwards, Step son and family came back to my house. Even though it was pretty cold they all romped around outside. None of the kids really dressed for it but they had fun. My small living room became a a wrestling mat-all good fun.
Need to get stretches in before they all get up. We are off to the Air Force museum today. My DS loves it and the kids are now getting old enough to appreciate it.
I am logging some food to keep in practice but perhaps overlooked the wonderful birthday treats yesterday!
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio

Kylia - We're here for you. Don't feel you have to catch up with every single post, dear heart. Just keep breathing, we're always glad to see you when you pop up.
Annie - Thanks for the suggestion. Oddly enough, I had dragged out the highlighters and have been using them in my planner. I've started coloring in each of these habits I'm starting to accomplish to give me some sense of what I've done. There's another space in my planner where I could set up that tracking, as well. It's a great thought.
Heather - Like anything else, healing your body takes time! You'll get there, you just have to be gentle with yourself to correct ingrained ways of standing and walking and working. I have no choice but to work on an easel or something upright, whether standing or sitting - I never could figure out how you painted on a flat table. Never worked out how you wrote in bed, either. Do you sit and bend over your tablet, or do you lay back, or lay flat? Any length of time in bed, and all my muscles are tied in a knot and aching.
Ginny - That's a LOT of grandkids! Lots of family resemblances there, too... Looks like a houseful to me. Glad you're enjoying them.
Machka, Barbara, Heather, and more I'm sure: When it comes to what I no longer do because of Corey, I try to remember what he stopped doing because of me, and particularly since I got ill. He loves the long drives in the country that Barbara mentioned, but I haven't been able to do that in years, due to my body's demands on me, and he won't go without me. He quit smoking because I did, and then quit vaping because I did. He enjoyed them both, and had I not stopped, he certainly wouldn't have.
For me - it's just not possible for me to do the solo things I enjoy when he's here, like crafts and writing. It's always more fun to be where he is. We're both beginning to get better at letting the other one go and do, like grocery shopping. I try to make sure he gets that solo walk out to the orchard and around the yard when he gets home from work. It's part of his disconnect from the day's work, and truly enjoy the time while he's at work and I do what I choose. I guess I'm saying it's a balance.

Good morning from the beautiful Arkansas River Valley, where the sun hasn't risen yet. I'll get used to the time change soon, I'm sure.
Regarding my previous discussions of husbands--mine called in sick this morning. Scared me when I woke and he was still beside me at nearly 6 a.m. It began last night, when I handed him his phone at about 4 p.m. yesterday and said he should call his sister in Alaska. He hadn't talked to her in a year, and from a few things that popped up on Facebook, I knew it was a good time to call. And then he had to call his brother in Arizona, and then his other sister in Oregon, then his other brother also in Arizona, and then his other sister in California... and while they were still talking at 9:30, I headed for bed. He's 9th of 12 kids, and it's a good thing that long-distance no longer costs extra, and that there are some he's not as close to!
Anyway, between the phone calls and not much dinner and drinking beer while he was talking to each of them and the late evening, he over-indulged more than he had in a long time. Doesn't bother me - I'd rather him stay home, since it's statistically a high-accident day, with lots of people not getting enough sleep due to the time change. Couldn't have SAID that of course, and did not, but things work out like they're supposed to. I think this is the third or fourth time in the 15 years I've known him that he's called in sick.
I am in my usual sound cocoon on a Monday morning, washer and dryer and dishwasher going, and the sky just starting to lighten outside, so I'm happy. Lots of the usual Monday chores to get done plus a few other things. I was able to get back to my refrigerator mural yesterday for the first time in a while. I was not happy with the previous layer of paint I added on, so I had to wait a little while and decide on what I wanted to do. Happier with it now.
Egg's laying on the back of my chair, purring, so she's happy.
And I lost a pound this week, which is making me happy, too.
Hope it's a good week for all,
Love,
Lisa in AR

Rita In the vitality summit I watched they interviewed doctors who are practicing functional medicine. In functional medicine they are trying to get to the why you are sick. With chronic illnesses looking at the total environment, food choices, lifestyle choices is one of the first steps. Are there better choices for the patient other than a pill to help the patient.
Sounds like you got an excellent nurse. I am as you know a firm believer that diet can make a big difference for your health. I think she has given you great suggestions. I agree about the fiber. I do eat plenty of fiber. I eat at least 20 different fruits, veggies, herbs, spices in a week. The salad I had for lunch yesterday had 8. I also try to eat as many organic food items as I can. Meat is a condiment not the main course for me.
I agree if you are not used to a high fiber diet to add it in slowly. The standard American processed diet has little fiber because food can spoil faster with fiber. Food manufacturers cater to our bliss point not our health.
Even with imperfect sleep (still up at least once a night-leg cramps or bathroom) I feel great and little to none aches and pains.
Yesterday the talk was on attention. In order for our intention to bear fruit we need to give it our attention. We live in an age where there are too many distractions. I liked what he said about figuring out what nurtures my garden (self) and to filter out the negatives like too much negative news or giving into others to meet their needs at the expense of my own.
What you pay attention to can thrive given the right nutrients, time, and knowledge. It is figuring out the priorities and sticking to that. My health, my son, my volunteering, singing, friends, gardening, art. Health does come first for me because without that the other things in my life become harder if not impossible to do.

Unfortunately there is not much balance in our situation.
He hasn't stopped doing anything because of me. That was one of the things I enjoyed about us ... we were both into getting out there and doing stuff! Neither one of us wanted to stop the other from doing something, we'd be in there doing it together.
However, he has stopped doing a lot because of his brain injury. The brain injury took his job, his memory, his ability to cycle long distances, his ability to walk distances and different terrains, his energy, much of his motivation, his ability to see projects through, a portion of his cognition, the ability to deal with things, control over emotions and so much more.
Because of his brain injury we have cut way back on doing many things WE enjoyed doing together like travelling, being active, attending events and all sorts.
And I have stopped doing a lot of things out of deference to him.
I don't blame him ... the brain injury is not his fault. It's one of those horrible things in life you never expect.
It's possible he misses doing all the things we used to do too, but it's hard to tell.
But, I am very thankful for days like today when he wanted to ride his bicycle with me ... and hopefully our plan (because he is part of it too) will work to allow us both to be more active. I hope to update you all by the end of the month.

Yesterday I listened to a podcast about how people are influenced by social media to feel that they are not enough. I don't do social media and I long ago learned how to sidestep comparing myself with others. Each of us here has her own special talents and accomplishments. I may be a champ for my years of walking more than 10,000 steps a day and riding my exercise bike for hours but I can't also be a crafting whiz, home decorating expert, world's greatest grandma, gourmet chef, world traveler, vegetable gardener, full time employee, university student, accomplished writer, landscaper, caregiver and all the things the rest of you excel in. I have chosen what's important to me and that's where my energy goes. I admire all of you for your accomplishments. Could each of us accomplish more? Of course we could, but we can't do it all.
Barbie in NW WA7 -
Machka, sorry to read about your struggles and hope your plan works out for the both of you.
For myself, hubby and I do pretty much everything together from grocery shopping to doctor appointment, visiting family and friends, etc. The only thing he is does not do is travel so I go solo. I would like to go more often and can afford it but I feel guilty leaving him alone so limit myself to one trip per year and I'm happy with that. I know he would prefer I don't go at all but I love seeing new places and the experiences that go with it. I feel I need that for my own mental health.
I'm struggling to get used to this time change. Wish they would stop doing it.

Today is: Celebrate your plumbing and tools! We celebrated both a day early. DH replaced our water heater on Friday. On Saturday, one of the pipes attached to the heater ‘blew’ off putting water everywhere!! His tools (he ‘worships’ tools!) all got wet as the water seeped down into the storage hold below the heater. ALL GOOD NOW! Don’t forget to ‘wash out’ your nose!! I use Neli Med (generic) often now that it is allergy season here!
PS.. planted some Snow Peas yesterday, watered my green onions and garlic bucket, and the parsley bucket which all kept over the winter and are starting new growth already! (Mums too!)

Did 20-40-60 workout today then walked on the treadmill. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Cathe DVD.
Heather – hug
barara – the guide also talked about this one bird who had a SNAKE in his mouth. Not for me, that’s for sure. About travel: Vince did a lot of traveling for work and I stayed home. My PLAN was that when he retired, since I was home all the time, we would travel and I’d be able to do some of the things he got to do. Nope...didn’t happen. I’d like to travel with my best friend so I wind up staying home.
Lisa – Corey called in sick???? What’s this world coming to? Congrats on the pound lost
Think I’ll walk to the post office and if it isn’t too windy lay out by the pool

Heather: I have 3 small table easels that we use when my son, DIL and I paint. We love the easels. I don't know what using a bigger one would be like! Your paintings are already so lovely. I wonder how using an easel will change your painting?

Machka - thank you for those exercises, very timely. I had forgotten about the piriformis stretch and how beneficial it was for me at one time. Do you perform these stretches every day? Probably wouldn't hurt to do them several times a day, right?
Debbie- your DH did a great job at that show. How neat that he enjoys making the figures and selling them, something to take his mind off his mother's abuse. And is it me or does MIL seem to calm down when he doesn't see her for a while? Does she get "revved up" when he stops in a lot? She's nicer and calmer when you stop in. Maybe she knows she's met her match.
Beth - winter isn't over yet, is it? Looks like you easterner's are in for some winter weather still. At least the bitter cold is over for this winter we hope. Starting Thursday, it looks like we're in for a week of sunshine and no rain - maybe 70's in the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday.
Barbie- Agree. It's so nice to be this age and not in a high-school competition to be like everyone else. We all have our strengths, likes, and goals. This group is so good in allowing us to support each other and our individual choices.
Friend Charlie stopped by yesterday afternoon and fired up the Kubota tractor and repositioned it in the shop so I have room to pull the mower in right in front of it. The shop door on the other side, where the mower used to sit, gets tricky and doesn't want to close. Probably needs to have the unit replaced but that's way down at the bottom of the list of repairs around here, so easier to use the other door.
This post has been sitting for hours, I should probably hit the "post" button. Let's see if it works.

Things are feeling easier! I can walk around the house.
Haven't heard anything from the doc about the X-rays, but I went into my portal and found I have raised CRP. That means inflammation. Apparently she then requested bone bloods, and it came back Abnormal, but I can’t see where. Everything is in the normal range. My B12 is within normal range but low, so flagged up.
She hasn't got back to me, so it can't be urgent. Can't imagine why I'm lowish on B12. My diet is super healthy.
Had sea bass tonight with curried bean sprouts and coconut, with slim fries.
The rest and heat seems helpful. Crossing fingers.
Will see how I'm feeling tomorrow about the Bea pick up. John painted her card today, while I attempted to paint without hingeing forward. Made it half-way through, then lost the will to live, after my sleepless night. But I've made a start.
John's card is great. She always eats butterfly pasta when she comes here, with pesto. And most of the rest of the time! Inside he has written all the wonderful about her beginning with B. We call her Bibi.
I will post it next from my phone.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx4 -
7 -
Heather - That's absolutely wonderful, the card. Glad things are easing up somewhat. I have an easy time advising others to be patient, but a hard time practicing it, so I'll hush.
Pleased with my 20 minutes of yoga and 12 minutes on the elliptical. Machka, I added a couple of your stretches in, and I can tell by how hard they were for me that I definitely need to do them more. Feeling even more virtuous because I did all these things with my husband sitting in the living room with me. He finally emerged for some coffee about 10 a.m. and ate a cup of ramen noodles for lunch. Now he's ensconced on the couch in sweatpants, reading under a blanket. I'm not on record as being overly sympathetic to self-inflicted illness, but I'm holding my tongue. He still looks a little pale and interesting.
Time to either clean floors or work on my mural. Or both. Mural first, I'm thinking. Still just doing one color at a time.
Later, y'all,
Lisa in AR

Rebecca--Glad you got your son off with no problems. What a great month of memories you have. Your youngest GS looks so happy. I agree 40 years is time to do somethings special. Ours will be in Nov.
Debbie and Machka--Happy B-lated Birthdays!
Tracey--Great mews on your 100%. So proud of you.
Rosemarie--Pray your trip goes well, sounds like a lot of fun. As for the friendship I hope they understand and give you the space you need.
Got a letter from the insurance company and they are raising everyone in Nebraska deductable to $2000 for any kind of wind or storm damage, do to all the wind and storms lately. Not happy about it, but what can you do as have to have insurance on the house.
I understand the feeling of doing things a lone we used to do as a couple. I am trying to come up with new things and it is not easy.
Ginny--What a great picture of you and the grandbabies. Glad the visit is going well.
Well it was interesting weekend. Saturday we went to breakfast with our geocaching friends and then went to Omaha to the big World of Wheels car show. Then on the way home about 70 miles from home we hit a deer. It was so strange as DH seen it and stopped it was standing on the side of the road and looked like going to head down into the ditch and last second turned around and jumped on the front of the car. It was a good size one and did a lot of damage. So DS and wife came and pickup us up. Left it at some friends house. Insurance sent tow truck to pick it up this morning. DH told them they needed to pickup key first. But they didn't tell the driver, so he calls once he is there. So he had to come back to town and get the key and go back. I do not have a good feeling about this.
Was late and I was upset when we got home Saturday night and with time change we skipped church. Then for lunch we met DS and wife and DGS and baby for lunch. As we are sitting there about 25 people from church come in for lunch. So much for that. Did have a nice lunch and fun with the little one.
Back at work today. Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE where the temps are 60-70 the next couple days.6 -
After exercise I noticed that because of the callous on the bottom of my foot, I’m walking weird and another callous is forming on the bottom of my foot. NOOOOO I won’t have this. So I went to WalMart and got some of those callous remover pads. Also bought gas since we’re going to see my cousin tomorrow, meeting for lunch. I’ve already looked at the menu and I’ll have the fish sandwich, asking them to substitute beans and rice or vegetables for the fries. I know I substituted last time we were there.
Laid out by the pool. Too breezy to go in the pool, tho. I have a feeling it’ll be nice tomorrow and I’ll miss going by the pool. Oh well…..
Tried to go bowling earlier and believe it or not the bowling alley down here not only opens at 11, but it’s closed on Mondays. I never thought it would be closed. So went to CVS to get a prescription and then home and I went by the pool. I signed up for the lady’s lunch Wed. Know that I’m going to have their salad since it looks like almost everything is deep fried. I also signed us up for the pot luck on Friday. I’d forgotten that you had to sign up for it
Heather – wonderful card! Like Lisa, I have a hard time practicing patience. Like I’m not patient to stretch my calve to have this callous go away. I just don’t want to wait 3 to 4 months. So I got the pads. Now to see if they help
Going to go work some more on Jess’ tree skirt. I’m now at the point at the bottom where it takes a long time to do one row.
One of the really nice things I like about FL is that there are a lot of sidewalks. Well, we are in the older part of the town. I can walk to the post office, a grocery store, hardware store, thrift store, dollar store, downtown, the park, the mall across the street for any of the restaurants and ice cream (yea!), another ice cream place, church, health food store, another restaurant where on wed. if you buy just one thing (even a glass of OJ), you get a free slice of pie. Not that I need pie, but it’s somewhat of an incentive for Vince to go walking. Speaking of which, he said that he did some walking on his own the other day. He took his headphones. I commented on how relaxing it can be to just listen to the music while you’re walking. Now hopefully he’ll keep it up. Should be easier now with the time change.
Vicki - deer can be so unpredictable. Glad you're all safe
