My book lesson for today is to deliberately put extra food on my plate and not eat it. I will try that tomorrow at the restaurant. I generally overeat, to the point of feeling too full, at restaurants. I try to order food with less calories, but I seldom leave anything on my plate. Although I have been doing better with French fries lately. I stop when they get cold. Hmm. I could stand to practice that. I could get a burger and eat half of it. Or even the avocado chicken sandwich.

Has anyone tried the Nick's swedish lite ice cream? Instead of milk fat for creaminess, it uses a modified plant- based oil, whatever that is. I'm convincing myself not to try a strawberry milkshake in the restaurant because the portion size will be ridiculous and the calorie count astronomical. This sounds like a better choice, although rather highly processed.

We are planning to get some work done to the place before we move in: paint, floors, etc. We could move in with it as it is, but we'd like to make it more our own.
The area is better for cycling than our current area. There are several opportunities for us to cycle right from home, which we can't do now, and more within a short drive. That was one the things right at the top of our list.
But as for cycling to work ... it's 25 km each way so while it is possible, I think I'd want to be a bit fitter. Bicycle storage at the work end is also problematic.

Lisa in AR, at just past midnight on a Thursday morning
Mexican-ish food is one of my main comfort foods.
But during the time my husband was in hospital, I ate a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches, pasta with chorizo & pesto, and chocolate covered almonds.
Yum yum!
I like macaroni and cheese too. But I can't get my head around the fact that a few of you use macaroni and cheese for special holiday dinners. For me, macaroni and cheese is something I might whip up for a quick lunch, or something we'll heat up for a fast dinner, especially when we're not feeling brilliant. If we've had curry a couple days in a row, we'll have macaroni and cheese the next day to help settle the system.
That said, the best macaroni and cheese I have ever had was in Scotland ... a big bowl of the richest macaroni and cheese followed by a millionaire bar. I was in heaven!

Annie - Everyone deals with things differently. One restaurant habit that followed me from the decade after the gastric bypass was to go ahead and ask for a go box when the meal arrived, cut my entree and sides in half, and get them in the go box. I understand the psychology and discipline in training yourself to stop eating everything on the plate, but I always thought it made more sense to remove temptation than to risk mindless over-eating while enjoying conversation in a restaurant. Do what works for you!
Machka - I know you're aware of this, but the more you can do before you move in terms of painting and floors, the better! We bought this house in July of 2018 and didn't move in until October, so we could get things done, and I'm so glad we did. It's so much harder to fix or change things once you've moved in, or at least we've always found it so. Your views are just stunning, and I hope the new home is safer for Rowan. Falls are so scary. The interesting change for me that came with ownership is the ability to think in terms of the next season or the next year in the house, especially with the work outside. Watching the seasons turn over and over in the same place has brought great joy and a very different way of thinking. I found myself wanting a Bradford pear tree, but remembered that they only last about 15 years here, and felt that was too short a space of time... On comfort food, one of the things Corey taught me was to make grilled cheese with light mayonnaise instead of butter. It's soooo good that way, cuts out about a third of the calories, gets just as brown and crunchy and so much less oily.
Tracey - I hope you have an amazing time with your friend. Those friendships are just irreplaceable and so precious.
It's supposed to be warm enough for me to get out and work on the bricks today finally, and Corey brought me home four big 5-gallon buckets of sand--probably enough to get me to the finish line on getting this flower bed constructed. The weather critters are saying 60F (15C) by 11 am. That means I can get out and get the prep work done starting at 10, while that side of the house is still in full sun. Woot!
One thing that's really helped a lot with projects where I'm on my feet more than a few minutes is that I finally found compression socks that fit outsized calves. They've almost completely eliminated the ankle swelling. That enlargement can get a little unnerving when your ankles double in size, but the worst is the pain the swelling causes. Because I know someone will ask, the picture is also a link to the Amazon listing - I like them so much I've got another set of three coming in today. Not cheap at about $9 a pair, but totally worth it. I wear them all the time except when I'm sleeping now. I've never been able to wear regular compression socks, 'cause they cut off my circulation immediately. These are great.
About 9 am, if I haven't heard from them, I need to call the people who are supposed to deliver the roll-off dumpster and ask if they've forgotten about us. They just said it would be delivered "sometime this week." That kind of vagueness is not my favorite aspect of any relationship, business or otherwise.
Later, kidlins,
Love from Arkansas,

Lisa you are right. I resist the to-go box because I want to eat it all. I need to make peace with a smaller portion ahead of time.
I did twenty eight minutes on my bike and fourteen minutes walking! Yay!
Annie in Delaware3 -
Regarding serving sizes ...
Restaurants here usually offer two sizes for meals: Entree and Main. Entree is about 1/2 or 2/3 the size of the main. I always order the Entree and it's a fairly reasonable size for a meal ... maybe just slightly larger than what I would eat at home.
If I had to guess, the entree choice of pasta in the example below would likely be a bowl with about 500 grams of pasta and sauce. At home, I would eat 375 grams of pasta and sauce with another 100-150 grams of veggies. There wouldn't really be enough in the entree to box up half to take home without leaving me a little hungry.
But if I ordered the main, that would be above and beyond what I could eat!!
https://www.lamensahobart.com/menu
Regarding compression stocking ...
I have several pair and I think that $9 is an amazing price!! They run $30-$50 a pair in stores here.
I thought I was doing well when I got my husband and I each a pair for our flight to and from Canada for $20/pair!
I use mine for flights or after running, standing for a long period, long walks, etc.

We are planning to do just about all the work before officially moving in. There might be a bit we leave till later like the closet doors, for example.
The doors are "french doors" - they open out into the room which ends up using a lot of the room. You can't have a dresser or bookshelf next to the closet because the closet door wouldn't open properly. Although I can see some of the appeal - I think it is easier to get at everything in the closet with these "french doors", I'm not keen on them.
So we might change them out ... but we might do that down the road a bit.

Barbara: All hail the working Roomba! I get frustrated when mine doesn’t connect with the app right. First world problems, eh?
Good morning from Jacksonville, Florida! 58F and sunny here.
Michele NC: My grandson, Jack, is graduating pre-K next month. Not sure myself. He’d actually probably be thrilled with a bouquet of flowers. Kids these days at least 4 times before high school! Barbiecat mentioned books. That’s actually a really good idea! If your grandson doesn’t have it, Dear Boy is a great book for little guys. Jack loves it. It’s my little stash of book and he picks it frequently when he’s here. He also likes Make Way for Ducklings, and the Buster books by Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
Machka in Oz: WOW! Those views are stunning. Good on you even thinking about biking to work. I cycled a lot up until about 5 years ago. I had a fall and got a little scared to be out by myself. My poor bike has been collecting dust. I maybe need something sturdier than a road bike, but ‘Dotty’ is a limited-edition bike, 1 of 500, and I hate to give her up.
So, beating myself up a bit. After last week’s 2-pound weight loss after 4 days of being back on the wagon again, I was very disappointed with ZERO for the week. I know… there was Easter and a night out, but except for that night out I was under my calorie count. I exercised 4 days for about 40 minutes. Really felt the scale was going to move even a little bit. I know I shouldn’t give total credit to the scale, but it’s too early in the game for a measurement change or for my clothes to feel different. I look at the pictures from the other night and I see chubby cheeks and just feel fat. Got to keep moving forward. It’s too early to give up.
ENOUGH of the pity part. Jack is here for the weekend since Stevany has a drill weekend for the National Guard. Going to do some repotting tomorrow and hoping to get Jake, Jordyn, and Mason here for dinner Saturday night. Jack and Mason are quite the pair when they get together. (Including a picture of them when I took them shopping at Aldi) I’m taking him to see his first live musical, Sound of Music, at a local church on Sunday. He saw the movie a year or so ago and seemed to like it. Going to try and be good while he’s here, but we usually get into baking cookies or making ice cream. Hopefully, I can get in a workout or two.
Ya’ll make it a great day,
Linda

Beth bravo to your son for helping and foo on the staff. Grr.
Tracey his brother is the only one Joe speaks to, on the phone, perhaps once a month. The nephew is an adult. He may be hesitant as when his younger brother visited, Joe came out of the man cave, met the nephew’s bride, said “hi” and retreated back into the mancave. OR, the nephew may be rightly hesitant because of his criminal past. Even though these are NOT the nephews we fostered, Joe was so hurt by the experience he wants nothing to do with any of them. [sigh] I respect his wishes when it comes to him, but go my own way for me. Took the visiting nephew and his bride out to lunch. Keep in touch through FaceBook with the nephews we fostered. Not sure what all I’m willing to extend to this nephew. Almost makes me thankful for my small family and geographically distant cousins. “we were taught at the nursing home to let the residents fall. Apparently, it can cause more injury trying to catch them than not.” That is so very very very hard to believe!
Annie that “leave some food on the plate” would be a hard experiment for me. I do much better asking for a “to go” container and packing up half, like Lisa.
Machka so very very happy for you. the views. Would love to see pics of your current garden after all your plants/hardscape have been move to the new one.
Lisa “That kind of vagueness [sometime next week) is not my favorite aspect of any relationship. . .” Amen, sister amen! Here “sometime next week” could be between this morning (unlikely) and never (yeah really). What Machka said about the cost of compression socks, I wear Sockwells (~$30/pr). Renal doc said the diet I’m doing ‘fixed’ my kidney’s, they are ok, but the BP meds I’m taking have depleted my electrolytes. So, in contrast to my cardiologist, he changed one of my BP meds and stopped two others. Have to get bloodwork in 2 weeks, then in another 2 weeks, and check my BP twice a day. I asked him if he would be my new primary care doc. He laughed and said no. Said I was the first person to ask him that! 😁
Therapist said for me to continue what I am doing, stopping the Welbutrin and modifying the amount of sleeping meds as needed.. I will probably stop those too. I am tired of medicines!
I’m feeling pretty good right now and want to continue dealing with my moods through meditations, breathing, and research rather than pills. I have ‘fixed’ my type 2 diabetes to the point of not even being pre-diabetic any more, and took my kidneys from late stage 3 to early stage 2, simply by changing and watching my diet. I’m hoping I can control my moods too this way. Research and reading is good!!😊
I’m am happy about the results from the doctors. Now I’m looking for a new primary care. My current one is ok, but pushes supplements which contributed to the kidney issues along with the high protien/fat-low carb diet which I cannot do b/c of kidneys. I’m not sure about what to do about this yet. Just thinking….

Well I lost about a week, so I went back about 5 pages!
Heather: Great you have a date for the surgery!
Lisa: Glad you had no clots and sorry you had to go through that medical test!
Michele: Great job getting the stairmaster in and then water aerobics!
Rebecca: The shrimp in the picture looks delicious!
Sue: I t will be great when that tenant is gone!
Debbie: Great on the 15,000 steps!
Tracey: Hope you really enjoy your visit with your friend!
Machka: Congrats! on the house! I love the view. It will be exciting putting together a new garden! One level...very smart!
Linda: Sounds like a great night out! Dinner at a Cuban restaurant and the theatre!
PipCD: Good for you for getting to the cremation ceremony! Interesting about pulling the gold fillings out! You don't hear about that every day!
Well I lost a week! My shortness of breath continued and I went to the doctor and the NP ordered blood work and an x-ray. They said they would know more in 48 hours. But Monday evening I felt so bad I talked myself into going to the ER. I was told I had a low chance of having a pulmonary embolism and was put on a monitor for an hour. The doctor never came back to me. I was discharged after an hour. It was a waste of time.
I called back to the hospital to make sure my Covid test was negative and it was. Yesterday morning the doctor's office called and said my D-Dimer test was high....I looked on the portal it is .78 and my wbc is 12,000. The office nurse said D-Dimer tests were an indicator of inflammation but Google says they are also an indicator for a pulmonary embolism. The nurse said I needed a CT scan and this could wait until next week because they are closed the rest of the week. Well I am not sure that is the best idea...but my breathing is not as bad as Monday. It comes and goes. Hopefully I am over the worst of it and hopefully the CT will be negative!
Best,
Rosemarie from Georgia

Good afternoon
Just brought a few things to whole foods to return to Amazon.
Not much interesting going on.3 -
Rosemarie ~ Sure hope you don't have an embolism. That sounds dangerous and hope you get help soon.
Beth ~ Watched the Fox News regarding the earthquake in New York. Hope you are safe with no damage.
I have been doing a tiny bit of cleaning this week which included vacuuming all the carpet. My task to start today was cleaning the copper kettles on the fireplace. I tried the method using vinegar and salt on a large kettle. It didn't do anything so I sprayed it with a strong degreaser cleaner. That was an idiotic thing to do because the smell got to me so bad I had to leave the kitchen coughing my head off. If any of you have an idea on how to clean this stuff, please let me know. Out of desperation I ordered a cleaner from Amazon which should come Saturday.

My friends flight changed again this morning, I’m waiting to hear if there is another change. She should be arriving in Toronto for the layover soon.
I hope you get some rest today but not enough to cause insomnia again tonight.
My comfort food is any that takes me back to my grandmother’s. Corn soup, potato scallop, pancakes (when I can get them made like hers) and Doughnuts, but only hers.
I’m actually thinking of making a batch because Cheryle grew up with her doughnuts too.
Machka - Congratulations! What a view!
Beth - Those prices are insane! In NB the government used to take money from savings, my grandmother was worried about that so she put all of her money into an account with my brother and Mom’s names only. It was still her money for her use. The government just couldn’t touch it.
It’s a shame that all of your Dad’s savings are having to be spent that way.
Pip - I have no words.
Barbara - Do the brothers not speak to be able to work this out themselves? Or is the nephew old enough to call himself. I hate being put in the middle of those things, unfortunately I find myself there a lot.
Beth - we were taught at the nursing home to let the residents fall. Apparently, it can cause more injury trying to catch them than not. I’m glad I was never in the area when a resident fell, I don’t know that I couldn’t try to stop it.
They are talking about outlawing “for profit”nursing homes here in Canada. The differences in care that was brought to light during Covid really spoke volumes.
Rebecca - I am getting used to do dishes but I’m sure grumbling about it.
Michele - our local high school does hair and such too. It’s a great way for them to learn. I have never heard of a gift for a preschool graduation, but maybe a book about starting kindergarten would be a good gift.
Well after a few changes my friend’s flight is back to the original time of arrival. So almost midnight.
I am going to ceramics, I’ll come home, put the dishes away, watch a couple of shows, maybe have a bath and then it will be time to go get her. I live 5 minutes from the airport so I don’t have a long drive to get there.
Off to ceramics, I’ll probably check in later.

There's definitely a system! Knives with wood handles I like to set out on a dish rag. Plastic containers next, setting them on the grate type shelving in the bay window kinda window. Then I put cutlery in the water, and wash plates and bowls. Those in your the drying rack. Last is pots and pans. Either on the drying rack or shelf. I have a space to put the utensils in the rack, but its a huge space, they kinda get
lost in there. That's my bit of an OCD system in a nutshell. When I made soup the other day I used a lot of things, so of course I had to wash dishes before I made dinner. Pain in the butt!😂

The compression socks I buy are also about $9 a pair. I did have a $5 coupon for the last pair I ordered. Mine are light compression. I like them because they look like regular knee high socks and they have dogs on them
Voice is much better still a bit gravely. I am not sure if I will sing on Sunday and have to wait and see. I now drink a tsp of apple cider vinegar mixed into a small glass of water first thing in the morning and rinse my mouth out afterwards. Apple cider vinegar is very acidic and can be hard on your teeth. I use an organic one that also has probiotics. I am also continuing with the aloe to help heal any damage from the GERD. I still often feel I have to clear my throat (a side effect of GERD) and have some of the dry cough. I am gargling more and sometimes with salt water. Not eating grains helps too or too spicy of foods. Because I caught it early the home remedies are more effective. It is when you get repeated laryngitis or laryngitis last for more than a week it is harder to treat with just home remedies.
I did get my tooth powder (a mix of calcium and phosphorus) I put coconut oil on my toothbrush. Then dip it into the powder and baking soda mix (in a small flat dish). Thanks to Rebecca's reminder I brush my teeth like they are fine china for two minutes. I try to remember my tongue too.
I have a dental appointment next week so it will be too early to tell how effective the new powder is yet.

Carol ... Buffalo did not experience the earthquake today. We are west of New York City by about 300+ miles as the crow flies (thank goodness for multiple reasons)! We are supposedly on a fault line but it runs more towards Ohio? At the urging of an aggressive sales agent, I purchased earthquake insurance at one time. We dropped it last year because several insurance agent friends laughed out loud when I told them I had it. It was expensive, but lousy coverage ...
Barbie ... that's a great photo of you and Jake!
Rosemarie ... I know that the ER experience was a bust for you this time, but if you experience the shortness of breath again ... given the elevated tests that warrant a CT ... I would go back. The ER can perform a CT scan on the weekend. Better safe than sorry.
Got my pneumococcal vaccine yesterday (Prevnar 20) ... didn't expect to feel off today, but I am. So, Lisa, I just finished my lunch of Creamed Eggs on Toast!
Son's infusion settled the migraine down enough that he went to work today. So that's good, but he's worrying about his commute on Monday as Buffalo is in the path of totality for the eclipse and they're telling everyone to expect significant traffic delays. He'll have to figure that out.
Snow this morning!

Rosemarie - good to hear from you, I was getting a little concerned. Hope they can get you scheduled for the CT scan ASAP. Glad your breathing is better.
Barbie - very nice shirts and very nice photo.
Pip - why was there a limit as to how many could attend the service? Was it a teeny room? I'm trying to envision the set-up. I'd probably skip the gold teeth but that reminded me of when my DH had his teeth removed to get dentures - he had gold in some of them. I wondered if the dentist extracted the gold and made some $$ on the side.
Linda - cute grandkids. Also loved the photo of you and your gang at the SIX play. I enjoy hearing about your day and your activities.
Tracey - enjoy catching up with your friend.
Beth - snow! Hope traffic isn't too bad for your son on Monday. I haven't seen the weather reports, am wondering if clouds and rain will dampen some of the excitement. It will still get dark though.
Computer stuff:I managed to uninstall Windows 10S and get plain old Windows 10 installed, then downloaded LibreOffice on the new laptop. So far it looks good. Still using the Edge browser, taking my time to see if I want to use something different.
On this old laptop, I discovered that the scan feature on my Canon Pixma scanner/printer/copier doesn't work with Windows 11, Printer works just fine. Not sure if there's a fix for it, from what I found on Google lots of folks are having this problem. So it's not just me.
Which tells me I'm going to keep Windows 10 on the new machine for as long as I can, that scan works. I don't use the scan feature very often but sometimes it comes in handy - though I could go to the library and use theirs, so I have a plan B.
I'm waiting for Alex and the chain saws to pull in, he messaged me a little while ago they are running late but would get here. Turns out we actually have sunshine peeking through so weather might be better later on anyhow.

Hallo all!
The good news is that I have been given a date for the second hip. 26th July. That's 8 weeks after the first one.
That gives me 10 weeks until the October cruise. I will have to have a discussion with the insurance team about coverage for the risk. They may not take it, or charge too much. We will have to pay the balance for the cruise before the operation. I would be happy to cancel and put the deposit towards the second hip. But there is also John to consider.
I went to see the nurse for the brachial bp test. Nothing there. I asked her to enquire about the doctors report on my health for the insurance. It's been 10 days with no communication and I have asked 3 times. Things then started to move. They charge £45 for an insurance report, so I am waiting to see if Saga are satisfied with the documentation I have already supplied from the surgeon and the physio. I also asked for stronger painkillers for the night time, but nothing has come through. How useless can you be!
Well, at least things are moving!
Edie came over with Max this afternoon. They walked over on their own. Max attempted a 'Fauvist' picture.
He was not happy with the result, but I like it. At least he didn't give up!
Edie spent the time working out how to construct a 'Battleship ' board with John. Very complicated.
I had no idea what to do, but just started and ended up with this experiment.
We all pushed ourselves out of our comfort zone.
