    Find the number of calories you're allowed to eat to lose weight. Don't exceed those calories. Exercise helps for fitness and to burn off some extra calories if added.

    Repeat daily, until you reach your goal.

    Logging is first and most important.
    As @ninerbuff said, figure out how many calories your body needs to lose weight at a reasonable rate. (MFP has an easy setup guide, or you can use an easy tdee calculator, like sailrabbit ).
    As you learn how to make substitutions and manage portion sizes, move closer to your goal calories.
    Can't get much simpler than that.

    Log all food and drinks without skipping anything.
    Weigh yourself regularly and record it. It's data-don't attach feelings to it.
    Find exercise you can stick to.

    When you fail at all of these, forgive yourself and start again.
