How to Fix a Sedentary Lifestyle
Modern advances make our lives easier, but they've led many of us to adopt a more sedentary lifestyle. Moving less and sitting more is linked to several health conditions and is believed to be a significant cause of the obesity epidemic.
Sitting for longer than four hours per day significantly increases your risk for cardiovascular disease (perhaps even more than smoking), diabetes, and several other obesity-related conditions.
The article provides 12 tips ...

Good morning beautiful ladies!
Allie I think that new haircut is cute but will need trimming often. Be careful of maintenance, it can take over your life!
Tracey my Dad hates shopping. I remember when I was little and we were in the grocery store, he was teaching me formal dances. I prefer to go alone because it takes me a lot of concentration even using a list. I have to remember where everything is, and whether we already have some. Quite the chore for us mildly challenged folks, but it's good for me to get out of the house.
I'm a little miffed with Dad today. He woke me up at five thirty slamming around looking for his walking stick. He has no idea how much noise he makes. Oh well, I have more than an hour before we leave, maybe I can nap a little.
Have a great day! May you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!

No I can't take a nap. It's a four bedroom house but he has got to come make his noise three feet away from me. Grrr.
Today's big challenge is to overcome my reluctance and invite his friends to his birthday party that I don't want to host. I am off to a bad start.

Exhausted!
I've spent 2 days driving a 3.5 tonne truck and cleaning out the basement.
Yesterday we loaded the truck and took most of the stuff to our storage unit and some to our house. A 3.5 tonne truck actually holds a lot of stuff!!
Today we half filled the truck and took the stuff to the tip. Then we filled it and took it to our storage unit. There are also 5 large garbage bags full of stuff we're throwing out sitting outside the basement/garage now.
So much walking, lifting and carrying.
1.2 km of actual walking (on the way home after dropping off the truck), but a whole lot of steps loading the truck!
We'll go back tomorrow afternoon with our own van, but I know I'm sleeping in first!!
Driving the truck was fun (once I got over feeling terrified in the beginning). I think it is the biggest truck we can drive on a normal driver's licence. It's the 3rd time I've driven a truck like that ... the immediately previous time was 20 years ago!
Digging stuff out of the thousands of mouse droppings was not so fun. We both had a shower when we got home!!

Annie, Does your grocery store offer a pick up option? We have been using that for several years. It allows us to browse, read labels, and add items to the grocery cart through the week before placing a final order and choosing a time to drive to the store and park in the curbside pick up spot and have someone bring our groceries to the car. At the height of the pandemic when my top priority was staying away from people, I decided that I could be happy with the groceries and sundries I bought from that one store, plan a week at a time, and order other obscure items from Amazon.
Allie, I, too, am concerned about you and hope you will continue to make caring for your health your number one priority.
Jake's multiple health problems cause him to be extremely fatigued. He says that the blessing is that it requires that he do a daily inventory of what's important so he can use his limited energy to do the things that are most important and ignore the rest.
Machka, Thank you for sharing the daily saga of your move. You are being so careful with everything and so aware of your husband's limitations. You'll will be happy you've done it this way.

Machka- I say good for you..get a good sleep in.
Flea- alot of factors for kidney transplant/ dialysis, first off..you have to have a matched donor.. my kids aren't interested
Then you have to have a clean environment. Which right now..is very hard for me to do..or even keep up..as I am exhausted all the time.then once the transplant is done I will need to be having to going down to the hospital 45 min away twice a week for 6 weeks and have to stay away from most everyone and everything because of immune system.
And I will be on so many pills I'll be rattling like a bean bag.
I would at least like to get through the next few months comfortably so I can enjoy my cruise and my new granddaughter. And then we shall see what happens..3 -

This weekend, I've pushed us both past our limits. I didn't want to have to do that, but time is getting on and we need to get it done! And there's a lot more to deal with than I anticipated!
But I have to say, it felt great to get rid of a load of stuff at the tip! It means that in 3 or 5 or 10 years when we have to move into the next place, I don't have to deal with them.

Tracey - I love how you are posing Patches in different scenes. Very clever! I think I discovered the sizing problem with my Oofos. The old ones were made in Korea, the new ones in Vietnam. So probably some machining differences in the 2 countries, and perhaps a difference in the composition. Crossing fingers you get a call on Monday.
I have an appointment to get my new orthotics tweaked on August 6th. He'll do the adjusting while I'm there.
Lisa - very happy you are catching up on your sleep. Makes a huge difference. With the days starting to get shorter, I'm up to 6 hours of sleep now with a tinkle break. Hopefully will be back up to at least 7 by the end of next month. I'm on the chicken schedule.
Kylia - great to see you popping in. Love the kitty updates! I noticed my kitty using her scratching post this morning. So grateful her paws are healing.
I am very glad to be back in my normal boring schedule after a couple weeks of disruption. Eating and exercise have been off the mark:Haven't been logging or recording my activity. I've been snacking more than usual after supper - having cleaned up the food I don't normally eat much of (lots of ham left over from my visitors last week) and carb heavy sandwiches for lunch two days in a row has had me heading for the munchies again. Plus, blueberries are in season. They are delicious and I'm eating a lot of them along with nuts after supper all week.
I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped on the scale yesterday - weight has not moved upward. Since I'm pretty full when I go to sleep at night, it's been easy for me to skip breakfast and go 15-16 hours on just black coffee and water until lunchtime. That's probably helping.
It was great lunching with old friends this past week. Some changes at the restaurants, though, since I was there last:One of them - now, it's half a sandwich at a dollar less than a whole sandwich used to be, and a whole sandwich is $3 more. Chips included. The place didn't seem very busy, I'm afraid the cost might be cutting people back. Sure hope she can stay afloat. I got the whole sandwich for $16 - enough for lunch and supper, so that was OK.
The other one - mainly just sandwiches, but food is fresh and the owner does creative things. However, she no longer posts prices!! I go in prepared with a $20. For a piece of ham on a bun and microgreens, $15. Without a tip. She wasn't very busy either.
Don't know if I'll be able to mow the dandelions today - temps are due to soar well up into the 90's (then cooling back into the 70's for the next ten days.) And I'm afraid many of them are going to seed. Can tell more when the sun comes up for a few hours.
Sending big hugs all around to you gals dealing with so many challenges.

I can relate to how Jake feels on some days. Has he read the theory of the spoons? I'll look for it, just in case, and you can share it with him.
So thankful his new meds are showing positive changes.

I understand all that for transplant, but is all that true for dialysis as well? My friend mentioned that she knows someone who does at home dialysis. I'd not heard of that.
We want you around and healthy for a good while to come.

My Lazy Susans are fabulous! I got two to fit side by side on the middle shelf. I had to climb up a mini step ladder to wash the shelf , and made sure I cleaned the bottom of the bottles. Nearly everything fitted on, apart from a tall bottle of Chinese cooking wine, but I have a spot for that in the utility room. Sooooo happy!
I know I'm a bit late to the party with these things, but I've always been a late adopter, as it takes me so long to spend money on anything, apart from actual food!
I'm going to get one for the top shelf of the fridge, which is even more crowded. I think I can fit one big one in there, but will measure carefully.
Knackered after that! Had a nap, then tackled prepping the halloumi curry. I used to dread frying the halloumi, but now I have it licked. All done apart from putting back the fried halloumi and two bags of baby spinach.
Then I hung up the laundry in the utility room.
So, a good day.
I chatted with my exhausted friend G, who is on her way north to rendezvous with her granddaughter at the other grandparents ' home. She is staying in a hotel nearby. She keeps going, but is beyond tired.
She blames having to reduce the steroids she is on, but I think she does far, far too much. She is 75, and her back is very painful, apart from her other troubles. She is forever on the move and on the go.
I can only be a listening ear.
I've told my elder son about his uncle. Now I will text my brother and tell him about all the love people are sending him.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxx5 -
I finally edited the first story I wrote with all your help! Came out great IMHO! I’ve finished writing my second story and need to edit that next. The third I am just beggining. I wrote the title and the theme down at least! LOL
Yesterday received new smart TV, but they sent 2!! DH has sold the extra so won’t have to worry about that. They wanted $67 to return! We only paid $110 for one! That shipping is just outrageous! So trying to sell the extra one for $100 - 42 inch smart TV.
Breakfast is still the muesli, 1/2 banana, 1/T craisins and a few raisins on Oikos Tripple zero yogurt. I had enough points for a free large frozen drink from Dunkin so got a large Tripple mocha to share with DH. We drank it and both had bad tummy reactions to it. It was really good though and we drank it all. Yes, I did share it but won’t get that again!
Dinner was pork loin, canned mixed veggies and tater tots with a couple pizza pockets and a nice salad. Lots of veggies of all kinds! Colorful! Supper was English muffin with butter and cream cheese and a fudgicle. Not the healthiest but filling. After supper we spent the evening putting up the new TV. Place was a disaster before, now even worse!
I thought I’d send a pic of our sunset last night. It was beautiful!

After work went and bought gas. $3.05/gallon. That’s a decent price.
Trying to buy Crocs at a decent price since I don’t need them immediately, I can afford to wait. Amazon has them at a decent price, only they don’t have them in my size. Guess I just have to keep checking back to see if they have them in stock.
Vince and I clipped all four kitties nails yesterday. Boy, as kittens they sure do grow fast! We need to put the extension on the water fountain. When we first got them, they were small enough that they didn’t need the extension. Now they do
Allie – add me to the list of people concerned about you
barbie – I like the way Jake is looking at his fatigue. He’s taking a negative and making a positive out of it
Flea – a friend of Jess’ was looking for a place down here and stayed with us. Her husband was on home dialysis. I’m pretty sure he had to do it every night but it gave him the freedom to be able to travel. He was in his 20’s or 30’s so not sure if Medicare covers it or not
Rita – that would be silly to return the TV. Make money on it, sounds good to me.
Think I’ll walk down to Food Lion. They have shrimp on sale (then again, it’s always on sale) but I should have some in my freezer.

Rita ~ That is a beautiful sunset!
Annie ~ You seem to worry so much about your Dad's upcoming birthday. Perhaps you could just ask his friends to meet at a nearby restaurant where each would be in charge of paying for their own meal. That way they can order what they wish and socialize with your dad.

Great article and worthwhile reading for everyone. I think Jake's point was that for most of his life, he wasted much too much time on things that weren't important and now he focuses on what is really important.

Gratitudes:
Yesterday: trip to P’s “deck party” over the pastures and into the redwoods. A family home/compound that looks like a rustic resort complete with indoor pool, hot tub, play structure and cabana.
Today: I misread next week’s forecast (80s and 90s!) by looking at the Winchuck instead of our place (max 73). Whew!
Between Zumba and dance party, 12,354 steps, most since May 2023 average. Boy was I bushed! This morning’s weigh in showed a GAIN of 1.1 lbs. :noway: Maybe too much salty food at the party ;}
Annie you are so right about having to work up to full Zumba participation, but it will be worth it. Do you ever shave parts of Teddy? The birthday party will be a gift to your Dad and bittersweet for his friends to see his decline. Perhaps some will offer to help? ((hugs))
Lisa “New! Easy! Just for you” ROTFLMAO  Thankful to hear no backlash, approaching regularity and healing power of sleep. That was me, thanks for the “whack-a-spammer”
Lanette thanks also for the mat trimming tips. Tumble is a mess and a new groomer just opened in town, need to make a call. I hear ya about lunch prices and don’t even go to a Mexican restaurant and have a margarita ($12) with your chili verde ($18).
Barbie that’s a popular recommendation. Our library only has the Libby ebook and there are 32 (now 33) people in line . . . Thankful to hear Jake’s new meds are doing what they should and the good attitude he’s cultivating about fatigue prompting prioritizing what’w really important. Maybe it’s time to teach Annie to dance? https://youtu.be/EbaeyljIHsM
Kylia best of show congratulations! Prayers for your friend’s DD and grands.
Heather champagne toast and wishing your brother well, excellent response to hard news. Had to google “claggy”
Kim delighted to see you pop in, you’ve been missed.
Allie while I hesitate to disagree with the expert, she might have a financial interest in her opinion. I think letting your natural grey shine forth will highlight your beautiful blue eyes. If you do feel pale, there’s always blush… The black hair is not my fave, but just imho. Holding good thoughts for the ekg, when do you get the results? ((hugs and prayers)) for the fatigue, the wait, your new GD to be, just everything.
Michele brava for doing that grant for your community kitchen. Fingers Xd. $3.10/gal IS a decent price. Last time Joe gassed up the Jeep he paid $4.359/gal.
Tracey what you said about sleeping to recover from stress. After caring (feeding, bathing, weekly church, duplicate bridge, dinner out) for wheelchair-bound Papa for 17 years, when he passed, Mama slept for an entire summer. She’d fired the first home health aide sent because it was too hard to get him up, bathed and ready before the aid arrived. Never occurred to her to let the aide actually do it.
Machka yes please share your FB tips!
Flea thank you from the bottom of my heart for the spoon theory story.
Rita, gorgeous, both the sunset and the salad
Carol, great suggestion to Annie about her dad’s birthday.
Been sitting way too long. Do I make/eat breakfast, body shower, or go into the hot tub first? You’ll notice that doing PT shoulder exercises didn’t even make the list . . .
Later, lighter, lovelies!
