WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2025

Great photos everyone!
I have a big woman for as long as I can remember. And for the most part I have accepted that I am a reasonably healthy obese woman. Most days I am ok with that. But there are days when I feel I should "better myself" and lose the weight already. That's when I fast, or get uber serious about my meals and what not. It passes and then I loosen that mental grip and get back to feeling ok with things.
I literally have no slim photos! 2014
A Christmas probably 2009
Ok ok my one slim photo, but I was the unhappiest I have ever been. Stupid Jenny Craig.
Currently I am eating one major meal a day. Not necessarily intermittent fasting though. Sometimes I eat cereal before going to the gym. When I go my blood pressure is 123/80 and my pulse is 130. I am ok with that. Its been a year or so that I have kept my BP under 130 on a constant basis.
Hugs ladies!

I had a dye test once- found out the hard way that I am very allergic to the iodine they used as the dye. Now I make sure that is on my records. Topical doesn't seem to bother me but just in case, when they did my surgery, they made sure not to use it.
Oh wowsa that must've been kinda scary for you! They had to use that "vein finder" on my arm to get a deep vein, then they took pictures, had me go away for a couple hours (we went and had pizza, with my IV still attached) then they reconnected me and took more photos. Crazy day as you have to position your body on this flat panel, it was so uncomfortable! Glad the topical is ok for you.

I was at the Kaiser in Corte Madera. It was some of the infertility testing. I was ok until I started to drive home to Santa Rosa- Thankfully I had a friend that still lived on base at Hamilton(she was our neighbor when we lived there) and I hung out at her house for a few hours. Hives were terrible but they went away after a few hours.
They often need to use butterfly needles or what ever they are called to find my veins.
Getting IV's are usually the worst part of going in for surgeries for me.

After work stopped at the soup kitchen to give them some tomato boxes from BK. See, they are very sturdy, double walled, have handles, they stack.
Deb – I can’t drink any type of black tea. It just upsets my stomach too much. But I figure there are lots of other alternatives that that isn’t the worst. I like just about any other kind of tea. Had what I thought was the peach and orange today at work and it was really good. I think it had more orange than peach.
M – I hate to admit it, but every one of those “Middle Age in a Nutshell” statements fits me to a T
Lisa – great news about your BF’s dad
Beth – I’m sorry you have to go thru surgery but glad to hear that it isn’t cancer. My sinuses were acting up last night so I took a decongestant. Seem fine now
Terri – how I wish I had learned to crochet from my grandmother. But I was a know-it-all teen who wanted nothing to do with that “old lady” stuff. Now I regret it
Rita – as a kid my dessert was usually a piece of fruit. Had cake, etc only for special occasions. Never had a routine “dessert” (cake, pie, etc) until I met Vince. He still laughs at me because to me a nice juicy peach is a wonderful dessert! Jess is doing the aerogarden. I’m not because if I just look at a plant...it usually dies...or is in poor condition. Hope the plants I planted last year make it
barbie – you are so strong. I admire all you’re dealing with and how well you’re doing
Rebecca – you are so lovely in those pictures
Went to ceramics tonight. We used to go on Monday and Wed from 5-8. This was before the pandemic. Then after the pandemic they were only opened 6-8. Well, now they are open something like 3-8. I’ve talked to Vince about going 5-8 instead of 6-8. On Mondays he doesn’t want to get home from bowling and then an hour later have dinner. So how about a compromise? I suggested then we go Tuesdays from 5-8 and Mondays 6-8. I really felt rushed tonight, and this isn’t the first time. Whenever something happens, it’s always my fault. This time I’m not good at time management. Honestly, I think for the most part I am. But just being there for 2 hours/day 2 days/week I’m constantly feeling rushed, I don’t want people to have to stay late for me because Vince doesn’t want to go earlier. So I’m going to push to get there at 5 next Tuesday.

Yes IVs are not my friend! They always need to find that one nurse on the floor that is a pro. Once when I had toe surgery, they put the drugs thru the IV and I burst out crying, then of course passed out. Most drugs like after surgery always make me emotional. I was crying after my recent gallbladder surgery. I don't know why.😂🙄

Awe, you are sweet for saying so. I never wanted to be absent in photos just because I was/am a bigger woman. For me being an obese woman is just a describing word like lots others, it doesn't have any negative feelings for me. Once I kind of realized that Lee didn't care one way or another if I was slim or bigger, he loved me just the same, I relaxed somewhat in my self positivity.😁💖

So beautiful! We have a blanket that we Recd very early on in our marriage and its still in great shape. I have another that's kind of a rainbow of colors, yarns that my maternal grandmother was using up. I remember her knitting it, and then she gave it to me for our wedding gift. 💖

Michele - it is sad that the soup kitchen needs to be bigger. It’s a blessing they have the means to be able to though.
I would feel rushed with only two hours too. I go 6-9 on Thursday’s. If I go in on a Saturday it’s 12-4.
Debbie - our food banks are struggling to supply all of the needs.
I read an online article a couple of weeks ago that over 50% of people in Canada are $200 away from not being able to pay their bills. That’s scary. It’s also true. We are really struggling this year with Rodger not working this season.
I was quite thin until I hit 38. I remember that being the first time I thought I needed to do something about my weight and I was 160. I wish I was 160 now.
We grew up eating mostly farmer/country type meals; meat, potato, veg for supper every night. Homemade pizzas on Friday’s during Dukes of Hazard. We ate cereal and surprisingly ate out a lot, but it wasn’t fast food it was sit down restaurants. I always had pop, chips, chocolate and ice cream. If my parents didn’t buy it my grandparents did.
Machka - I hope your husband gets his surgery date soon.
Is your old house at risk of the fire?
Heather - I hope the organization reaches out to you.
Lisa - Love your latest afghan. What a change in your BF’s dad. Good for him and her.
Beth - I need to get into physical fitness too.
Good luck with your surgery.
Machka, Terri, Lisa, Rebecca - love the pictures.
Margaret - it’s great that your neighbour called to check on you, I agree on good neighbours they are good to have and hard to find.
Hope you heal fast
Rita - I don’t know if you can find it or not but today’s episode of Kelly Clarkson had a segment about a school in New York that is teaching the students how to plant and build indoor gardens. It’s helping the students with not only science and math, it’s also helping with food scarcity in their homes.
Just another day at work. No news on MIL I don’t know if she got home or not.

Hello, young ladies!
I missed you all so much. It took me a couple of days to catch up. It was a busy four nights. I had a 13-year-old who had terrible headaches. They found a large tumor. They had to resect it. We are waiting for the results of the biopsy. I am getting attached. His mom is an ICU nurse, and we worked together like a team to keep him comfortable. Dad works with us as well. The last time I got attached, my son also visited my patient. He was a kid then. My patient's mom would call me to attend his field trips. Mom wanted me as his nurse every time I worked. When he died, it broke my heart. I was on FMLA from a hysterectomy. They called me to come in, and I did. My son was heartbroken,n too. This boy was a great soccer player and had a 4.0 GPA. I still get teary-eyed when I remember him. He lived for a year after the cancer diagnosis. Now, I have another sweet boy; I hope the tumor is benign. Then I had a 2-year-old with the flu, Salmonella, and dehydration. I loved him, too, and the mom and I became fast friends. We worked on his fever and drawing blood cultures. Then I had a boy whose mom could not stay the night, so I gave him a good bath and shampoo, then changed his sheets. He played the star projector, so he has stars on the ceiling. I played Disney lullabies, but he cried, so I played the shhhh sound, and he went to sleep. I love my job, and I go home with my rings closed on my watch.
Lisa, you are hilarious. I talk about old ladies, too, like I am not old. I am not old, but I still feel that I am young. My hip says otherwise. I didn't know you were in the military. I thought your ex was, which is why you had the benefits. You have had many lives. Egg tickles me watching Cat videos.
Barbie, You never cease to amaze me. I would have procrastinated getting all the paperwork done. I need to go downtown to get my paperwork done for my mom's taxes. For the years that she didn't file.
Matchka, were you Valedictorian of your high school class? You are not selfish. You need to be on your bike and move your body for your mental health so you can care for DH. My prayers are with you and your DH.
Kylie, you are beautiful.
Michelle, the puzzle mat does not hold the pieces in place. Just out of curiosity, do you knit? I ask because the book I read is called Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid, which starts a series called Knitting for the City. These groups of women get together to knit and talk. This one doctor likes to knit caps for the preemies and babies. Maybe you can do that for your local hospital to decrease boredom. The book is good, too—just a thought. Did the cyst on your back have a lot of pus? Did they put you on antibiotics? The Tea that I love is Irish Breakfast, Earl Grey, Chai Tea, and Peppermint Tea.
Rebecca and Allie, you both are gorgeous with your haircuts. Rebecca, I love your pictures. Especially the one with the water in the background.
Terri, you and my family are in my prayers.
Heather, I can see the joy on Bea's face. You and John are very talented artists. I am so glad you passed the joy of art to your grandchildren.
Heidi, That Baby shower looked well thought-out and a lot of fun.
Rita, I love your hair, too; you look great. My son has been enjoying your books.
Pip, I chuckled when I saw all three dogs sharing one bed. Chispa is barely on there. I love your babies.
Vicki, I hope you do well in your interview. I also hope you do not have to drive a bus if you do not feel comfortable doing it.
Carol, I agree that no matter how much we ache and hurt, we must keep moving so our bodies don't stop moving on us. I constantly worry if I am going to have Alzheimer's. I will do all I can to keep going.
My DH asked when I would retire. I love my job, but after I retire on February 9, 2026, or May 1, 2026( So my son has my insurance.) I may switch to finding a job I can do from home, or I will go back to the University of Chicago Hospital and work for 5-7 more years. Then, I want to work from home. I remember when my dad's doctor told him to keep working cause it keeps him moving. Otherwise, he will die soon. So, my dad retired from the Post Office at 68 and died at 69. That haunts me as well.
Beth, I am so glad that the biopsy showed non-cancerous tissue. Take it easy on your healing. Just walk around the house.
Tracy, prayers for your MIL, and I hope she will be on the mend soon. I know Rodger is scared; maybe he should see his mom. I am sorry that you didn't have your date. Maybe when the dust settles. Michaela looks fabulous in her sunglasses.
Lanette, my repairman, told me to get a Speed Queen, but DH wanted a Whirlpool ( he used to be a rep for Whirlpool and believes in their products.
Barbara, that line dancing sounds fun. My friend Baby Suko loves it. You are moving and grooving.
Debbie, it's good for you to let DH deal with the dog and the house. You need to catch up with your rest, too. DH should take a break from visiting his mom so she will eat and not misbehave.
Dr. Katie, I hate when someone hacks into my account. The banks will let you know if everything should be changed. They should credit your account without a problem.
Carla, you and your family are in my prayers.
Well, I will post pics of my DS and me saying goodbye last weekend very soon—goodnight, young ladies.
XO,
MO in Mississippi

I wrote 600 words this morning. Mostly about trying out new things and keeping an open mind. I cited our watercolour classes on the cruise as an example. I know so many people who won't try new things because they say they are no good at them.
Does anyone on here follow Dawn, The Minimal Mom, on YouTube? Shocked this morning to see her new video, saying she had divorced her husband late last year. There was also a video by her husband. They are both obviously hugely struggling and trying very hard to remain good friends. They have four children. I know she had hinted before that she had had a very difficult year, but I hadn't suspected that!
Anyway, if you do know who she is, have a look.
Went out just now to buy lovely organic eggs for Edie's breakfast tomorrow. I will join her in her favourite avocado on toast with fried egg. Yum! My son will bring over Bea's Weetabix and goat's milk.
John and I are having Dim Sum for lunch today and Lamb Tagine tonight.
After that I'm having lunch with G at Petis Pois, in The Lanes, which is a 'French' restaurant. They do a reasonable set lunch for £20. G and I are going to be 'twinsies', wearing our identical dresses from M&S.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Today's walk ...
Worked from home all day and fortunately didn't have to go anywhere. Unfortunately, didn't get a call regarding surgeons either.
Our previous house is not in danger from the fire at this point, but I've been watching now and then, and it is spreading. A second fire has started up as well, probably from embers. However, there is a lot of smoke in that area. Where we are now, we can see the smoke but the air is fairly clear ... if we were there, we'd be choking on the smoke.
I've never been valedictorian. I was in second place for it in one of the college I attended but that's the closest I've come.
Terri - love the shoes!!

Mo - You are such an incredibly strong human being that it just staggers me sometimes. I have a hard time just being attached to Egg, because if the world works the way it's supposed to, I know she will die before me! Knowing that you give your heart without reservation to these kids, when the fact that you know them is only BECAUSE they are in the hospital at risk of death, just amazes me. And I'm glad I can make you laugh. Perhaps that's why I'm here. It's not the worst reason I've spent time somewhere. If I ever publish my autobiography, I'll send you a copy. It's been an interesting life. So far, anyway! 😏😉😂
Heather - OK, that's funny, that wrappers with stylized, distinctive patterns should come back into fashion just in time for me to find one at a thrift store. On second thought, though, they may well be rising back up from that particular fashion source. Thrifting is a really big thing in the US at this point, so it makes sense that vintage patterns and styles would be showing up in new clothes. I'm actually wearing mine right now. Really comfortable, warm enough without being heavy, and lets me wear my T-shirts all winter long!
Debbie - Granny squares are just double crochets in clusters of three on the sides, six at the corners. Tons of YouTube tutorial videos - granny squares are a big, big deal these days. That's how I found the join-as-you-go method for putting them together. After putting an entire double-crochet border around this big beastie last night, I am heartily sick of crochet at the moment! 😂😉😏 The Wikipedia page on granny squares is also really interesting. They grew up out of the crazy quilt craze from the 1880s - so they've been around for more than 140 years!
And... busy day ahead - waiting on the bathroom vanity to be delivered this morning (between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., so HOPEfully this morning). Once that's here, I need to go into town to pick up a couple things. The rain is supposed to start by 2, and then rain all the way into early Friday morning, and would just as soon be home!
Unfortunately, I have a headache like nobody's business, so this front is definitely coming through. Being a human barometer is not my idea of a good time. But... at least I know it will let up as soon as the rain rolls in.
Happy Wednesday, my chickens, whether past, present or future... it's going to be a good day.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR

Great job on BP. Is that 130 pulse a resting pulse? If it is have you discussed with your medical team why it is so high and what would help to lower it.
I would say today my leg pain is now 0 just an occasional minor twinge. Side is now 75% better than it was an hour after fall. I have noticed from other injuries in my life you don't feel the pain for about an hour after it happens then it hits. I did sleep better last night so that helps too! I will continue on my treatment and be more careful. If it does not continue to get better or suddenly gets worse I will go in for further treatment.6 -
My mother taught me to knit when I was nine years old but she didn't teach me to cast on or doing anything fancy. I learned more about knitting when I went to college in Minnesota with women who'd been knitting sweaters and afghans for the cold all their lives. I learned to crochet when I retired. There was a yarn store near me with all sorts of classes. I learned enough crochet to decide that I preferred knitting but I did several small blankets and one huge granny square one before I went back to knitting full time.
I grew up in a world with cooked from scratch meals. I remember my mother being excited to try some of the instant and processed foods that came out but she didn't change her cooking much. When I was a preteen taking ballet classes in Florida we took salt pills to combat the all the perspiration but our diets didn't have enough salt in them.
I woke up in the middle of the night and for some reason thought I hadn't seen the payment to Medicare taken out of my checking account on the 20th like usual. I got panicky and tried to access my bank account on my phone to check, but accessing from an unusual place required a code that I could only get by phoning the bank during business hours. When I got up I accessed the account on my computer and found that all was fine. I just have an active "panic manufacturer" in my brain.
On a cheerier note, I went to the website for the company that picks up our garbage and recycling and discovered that the account is in my name alone (who knows why) so I don't have to address getting Jake's name off the account and found a place to show appreciation for the driver so I was able to say how neat and thorough the pickup was.
One of the chores I haven't done at this house is disconnect the hoses, put them in the garage, and put covers on the faucets. The hoses are tightly connected and one of the faucets is an odd configuration. I didn't know what to do and I didn't want frozen pipes to happen. Then I remembered our handy neighbour (the one who built our fence and does a ton of other things). I texted him and said that I needed help and he texted back that he'd come over at 10 this morning. I realized how hard it is for me to ask for help even when people have said to call them if I need anything. My mother told me that the first sentence I spoke was "Do it self". I guess I haven't changed much.
You all give me such inspiration. I read what you are facing and accomplishing and it tells me that I can do what's required of me if you can do all the things you do.

This was also from the ice sculpture it is weighing work versus sleep. Unfortunately the scale tips toward work.
Since it is tax time another thing that crops us for we who have lost a spouse is we will have the year they pass to still file married file jointly. In the following years we will file single. This can make a difference in planning for taxes. Knowing this for the year 2024 the year my DH passed helped me make financial decisions I would not have made otherwise.
For any of you who inherit stock I also learned yes there is a step up but what it also means if you sell any of the stock it will be taxed at short term gain or loss from time of passing. You need to hold for a year to get long term gain. I say this because it can affect your taxes.6 -

When I was subbing at a local elementary school, the fourth grade teacher had a garden in the playground for her students. Each year, she also had them hatch chicken eggs. I was in the classroom next door so got to watch a couple of the chicks hatch. Had my class go in and watch too. Fun way to learn. I always loved hands on rather than memorization. I was never good at memorizing anything and am worse now! LOL

@Mo—- books?
When to doctor yesterday afternoon and he immediately said I needed a breathing treatment but couldn’t find the nurse, so checked me out, decided it was an asthma attack triggered by the virus I’m getting over. Ordered me a home nebulizer from a company that takes my insurance, sent me a script for prednisone, and for the nebulizer and yeast infection I have from the last round of antibiotics he said I should not have had. I wondered how he knew that when he is not the one who saw me at the worst. He also said I am not eating right and gave me “HIS” version of how I should be eating and said in his words, other doctors “are wrong and I am right”. That really turned me off. I’m glad his NP’s are not that adamant about his diet. I can’t eat eggs, coconut, or coffee, which are the staples of his diet. He also said, which I don’t believe that there “is no nutritional value in vegetables”… ?huh? He is obsessed with this diet thing. Glad I only see him when there is no one else. He is a great doctor except for his obsession with that weird diet. The breathing treatment worked and my coughing stopped before I left his office. Just have to pick up the script this afternoon after my therapy session.
My DMD texted me yesterday wanting pictures of her and her grandmother (the one that just died). I told her I might have some but have to look. She hadn’t talked to me since I didn’t go to her house on demand at Christmas. SMH
My DDS texted me this morning to see how I was feeling. He knew about me being sick. That text made me feel good.

The town I grew up in and mom still lives in is pretty small agricultural town(was a lot more than it is now) so many that come through the food program are workers in that industry. There are some elderly but not a lot. The county food bank supplies most of the food but they also get things from Safeway, McDonalds donates a little, Farm to Table and also the grocery store that Guy Fieri uses for his show Guy's Grocery Games. There are a few others that also donate.
Each Saturday they give out so much. Many times two banana size boxes full of frozen meats, canned goods, fresh fruits/veggies, milk/cheese/bread and desserts.
I love helping when I am up there- just hate getting up at 4 am to be in there at 5 to help set up. Doors open at 7:30-supposed to close at 9:30 but they stay open as long as people are in line. They don't turn any away. Most are grateful for what they get, quite a few are very picky about what they get and complain if we run out or limit the amount for each item. Some try and sneak an extra one or two. A few pretend to not speak English but we know they do. A few are escorted around through the line to keep it moving and make sure they take what they should, to make sure there is enough for everyone.
We grew up on a farm- 3 1/2 acres- one acre was garden plus we raised all of our own meats. Beef/pigs/sheep/goats/rabbits/ chickens.
We bought very few things at the store. We canned and froze a LOT-Had and mom still has, two commercial size freezers. We grew/raised enough for us and the extended family.
We didn't start eating out until I was in middle school I think and then it was just Sunday after church. Either the local burger place or the only Chinese place in town.
I too was thin until about 38-40.
I was 95lbs and 4'10" when I got married the first time. First hubby was/is 6'3".
I don't want to get back to that weight but would like to get back in the 130's. At 150.2 right now. Highest was 176.

Heather - Dawn "The Minimal Mom" came up in my feed this morning. I watched that video and then her husband's. I'm glad she and the kids are able to live with her parents.
Lisa - thank you for sharing the "before" and "after" photos. Amazing difference, you lost not only pounds but years as well I think, and your beauty shines through.
Rebecca - cute haircut, she did a great job. I think it will grow out beautifully. Very attractive style on you!
Terri - thank you for sharing your graduation photo, you looked great (and still do!). Love everyone sharing their pictures - seems like yesterday, doesn't it?
Margaret - sorry about the fall, glad you are OK. I just detest walking on ice or anything slippery, for that matter, and have my yak-traks ready for our upcoming snow, rain and below freezing nights. Also need to get the snow shovel and push broom ready today. Maybe if I'm prepared to the hilt the weatherman will change the forecast.
Rita - glad you got into the doctor and that breathing treatment helped. Hope you get over everything quickly!
Lunch with T and a former co-worker tomorrow, Pat. She's also retired and was one of my favorite people. Really looking forward to seeing her again.
Make it a great day!

Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
I have a crazy quilt on my couch that my great grandmother made(she made the top along with three others for my mom, my sisters and I) but never finished them so mom had a friend finish them. I love it. Mom recognized many of the fabric pieces in each of them. A dress from when she was little, her dad's shirt, etc.
One granny square blanket and one with the zig zag pattern were both wedding gifts from first marriage-one made by an aunt and one by my grandma(dad's mom)
I need to get some sewing started for my friends mom- going to see how MIL's machine works and use it over at her house(no cats to get in the way and a nice clear table to use) plus another friend wants to buy the machine(I have three and MIL has 2 but will never use hers again, hasn't for many years). Need to make sure it works well.
Hope the headache goes away soon.
Hoping we get some rain in the next few days. I have some plants that need water(peppers, tomato, dragon fruit, etc) and it would be nice to have them watered for me.
Dh is snoring in the recliner behind me- he worked a graveyard shift last night. Trying to be quiet plus keeping the lights off- he could sleep with them on but better with them off.
He set up a time to take MIL's dog over to see her at 2. He didn't want anything to do with her last time but that was when she was in rehab. Hopefully this time is better. I will have to go with him. Haven't been to see MIL since they moved her. Supposidly she was asking for me- doubt it. Just last week she was still trying to get dh to leave me, move in with her at her house and take care of her there.

Awe, thanks! That was taken when we lived in Hammond Oregon, and that was in Astoria. Great coastal cities! We had dressed up in 1940's type clothing because we were going to the Liberty Theater a beautiful venue!
We went to a "speak easy" vibe place afterwards, and I had a drinky-poo!
