WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR FEBRUARY 2025

Well, the ranger supervisor finally got around to meet with us and tell us we have until April 30 to leave for at least 2 weeks. Well, if we leave, we leave. Now for more definitive searching for a new place to live. New RV is out of the question as that will give us too many new bills. The search is on. I was expecting this and have been searching since January.
Very cold here for the desert. Didn’t go over 30 degrees (0C) yesterday and has been in the teens at night all week. I have really been spoiled with living here. This cold is why we moved from CT!

Lanette - you can use the watercolour brush pens in the same way as ordinary brushes and paint. It just means you avoid palettes, and messy tubes etc. Palettes are a nuisance to clean, so, if you wanted to 'paint' a quick card for a friend and not get everything out, they would be a great solution. The water reservoirs mean you can take them outside with you, but I just use my usual water container at the table. I like watery effects.
You could draw first, but I haven't done realistic pictures for a while now. John does, often copying a photo, or postcard. I'm more of the 'blobby' school!I'm working with acrylics more now, but I did a quick card with the watercolour brushes last Monday with the girls. I just start with a shape and see where it takes me. It took me under the sea! A feeding frenzy of fishes.
Lots of YouTube videos on techniques. I follow a couple of women on Instagram who do very basic techniques, really for children, but I save their lessons for the girls and often copy them myself. My Valentine card was from one of them.
Lisa - We've been saying for weeks that we need more yellow. Edie couldn't find any, but we raided a new set and there was one there. We've got through four yellows from the ship sets we were given, and two other separate ones I bought. This one is a bit larger.
Everything is from Amazon. Our local art shop around the corner is very expensive, though I have bought the occasional thing from them. John bought me acrylic pens from The Works for Christmas when they were hugely reduced. We also have permanent ink pens, which are great, but they bleed through the paper, even the 300 gm, so you always have to use a polythene backing sheet, and they are not suitable for cards as you can see the bleed. The colours are lovely though and don't fade.
I still haven't put together the IKEA trolley which I bought for supply overflow. I have more or less cleared the space where it will go, so I don't know why I am delaying. It's sitting in the hall in a great big box.
Love you all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx4 -
The slow cooker is busy making chicken thighs with mole, black beans, and onions. This is something that Jake made and I froze in jars, We already had the mole, chicken thighs, beans, chicken broth, and spices. I bought an onion. This will make 10-12 portions for me. There are still tortillas in the freezer. When the tortillas are gone, I'll serve it with white rice, and when the white rice is finally gone, I'll get brown rice (my favourite).
When we started our weight loss journey in 2009, we didn't eat bread, pasta, or white rice. Gradually Jake got bored with our simple eating and asked to have more variety. Now my job is to finish up all that stuff and go back to my simple eating plan.

Hi Gals,
It’s been just a bit over a year since I had to make the decision you are facing Lynn, it is not an easy decision, but we do the best we can with quality of life as the guiding principle. Making decisions from a place of love.
Barbie - I am so impressed with how you are walking through the changes in your life. Embracing certain things, making slow deliberate changes in other things, accepting the crazy hoops that have to be jumped through, and allowing yourself to grieve as you need to and celebrate the little things. You are my roll model!
This is late! But someone was dealing with a toilet with rings and discoloration, what I have found that doesn’t scratch is to turn the water off to the toilet, then flush witch will empty the tank and partially empty the bowl then take a couple of gallons of the cheapest vinegar you can find and fill the bowl to cover the discoloration. Let it sit for 5-6 hours then with your toilet brush the sides – let it sit a few more hours and brush again. It can take a few times then turn on the water and flush, if it is clean you are done, if not start at the turning off the water stage again. I have water that is “hard” lots of minerals and have to do this about once a year but it doesn't damage the ceramic/porcelain and is not as bad for the pipes and water system as some of the harsh chemicals are.
Eggs – (chicken eggs not Lisa’s cat 😊) so they are now not a part of daily life for us but a special treat. At our grocery outlet (one of the most discounted places around here) they are $8.99 a dozen and at the more traditional grocery they are limited quantity and $10-12 a dozen. But do you know that a great substitute in baking is the ”juice” from canned beans – garbanzo beans in particular simply because the color is closest to egg. But if you are doing something chocolate the juice from kidney or black beans works too. It is called Aquafaba and ¼ cup is a perfect substitute for 1 large egg. – warning however it does change the nutritional outcome, and if you use traditional beans there is salt in the aquafaba so you may want to lower the salt in the dish, if you use low sodium beans it seems to be fine. I drain all my beans and freeze it in ¼ cup measurement in small zippie bags so I can just pull out what I need when I am baking.
Money - food costs seem to continue to go up here, and while I am a pretty savvy shopper I have gone to making all our bread, yogurt, and to really work on changing up menus to stretch grocery money. And Car gas has gone from around $3.30 a gallon to just under $5 a gallon in 3 weeks. My house mate and I have agreed to lower our heat from a max of 67 to a max of 64 – working from home makes it a bit tough on me, but we have to save somewhere. As spring comes and it is warmer outside that will help with heating costs. And we do not have air conditioning so summer is always cheaper as fans are not as expensive as heat.

Busy time lately as I'm kind of living 2 people's lives again.
On Tuesday, my husband had his follow up with the surgeon, then saw the physiotherapist and got his moonboot. His recovery from the Achilles tendon surgery will be very gradual and will take a long time -- they figure it will be 9 months.
He's getting around with a walker (the stand up and limp kind) and a knee walker, but it is very difficult for him, so I'm taking on a lot of things he did. He's also a lot more tired that usual ... probably because he's healing.
I'm making about half the dinner meals. Usually he makes them all.
I'm loading and unloading the dishwasher - that's particularly difficult for him to do.
I've done his laundry as well as mine. Usually we each do our own laundry.
I'm taking the rubbish out. That's normally his job!
Today, I did something for the very first time in my entire life. Today, I mowed the front lawn. I have never ever mowed a lawn before.
Growing up, my parents mowed the lawn. Then my husbands mowed the lawn or I lived in places where it was taken care of. When my current husband has his brain injury accident, we were already using a lawn service, so that kept going. But we stopped that a few years ago.
I was hoping that the heat would kill off the grass and no one would have to mow the lawn in the near future, but this grass here is indestructible. It's not going to die off and the winter growing season will be upon us soon.
So I mowed.
But it also got my husband out of the house. He was very patient and told me what I needed to do ... and he got some fresh air as well.
I am trying to encourage him to keep doing whatever he can do because I think it's important, physically and mentally, to keep active.
In addition to mowing the heavily overgrown lawn, I also worked a full day (from home), took Rhody out for a couple walks, made dinner, went for a bicycle ride, did some more colouring, and read.
Bicycle ride ...
Machka in Oz
Great job with the mowing! Also big hugs in doing all the extra things that your husband used to do. There's a lot of stress in that. Just getting all those new things done correctly etc. Give yourself a hug. You really are doing amazing. And still get the bike ride in. You inspire!👍🏼💖🤗

Michelle, Avocados are very high in potassium. Regarding Zumba, my friends and I took a class and laughing severely hurt my stomach. It was fun, though.
Barbie, it's good for you to enjoy a good audiobook. I love them when I am driving, doing laundry, or knitting.

Yes, I think that is what dh called the machine. Hoping one of her insurances will cover it(she has 3). He has already talked to the owner of the care home about her using it for MIL if it is approved.
She needs to just stay in the care home. We can't take the chance of bringing her back to her home, hiring 24/7 care and have someone decide they don't want to or cant work for MIL and not show up to work. Then dh would have to do it again. Mentally and physically he can't anymore
I have a couple tank tops that say "Zumba is my happy hour"
It is so true. When my friend talked me into going quite a few years ago now, I was very skeptical. I had never done anything like it. I told the teacher the first day, I'm old, I am uncoordinated and have no rhythm. I was bad at first, very self conscience and still stay at the back of the class even after all these years. I go twice a week and rarely miss it. I missed a week when my asthma was really bad I think twice and missed two months after having skin cancer removed and reconstruction done-dr. orders-no class for 2 months. That was hard. I even chose to go to class on my birthday and also on my anniversary. I choose to be where I am happy and around those who really bring me joy.
I still have a bit of a hard time when she does new songs/routines but I get there and she is very patient with all of us. I have met some great friends there. I am closer to them than anyone else in this town and I have been here 32yrs. Been in class about 8 I think.

Did an incline interval workout today. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Hot Body DVD. After exercise went to Aldi for a few things. I wind up going to the store often when I’m here to try to have as little to take home when I need to leave. Anyway, after Aldi, brought the groceries in, had breakfast, then went to a Board meeting for the condo. Afterwards, went to a thrift store here. I thought it was a bit on the expensive side for a thrift store. But it’s better than store prices, that’s for sure! Anyway, while I was there the guy who I think we’ll go with for the remodel called (well, it was his wife) saying that he’ll get off early today and can come by to put in the toilet so I made sure I got home Update: got home and Vince was here so I just got dinner ready
Speaking of apples: at Aldi there was something called Snapdragon Apples. I’d never heard of them. So I bought them to try them. Not bad at all (but then again...I’m a fruit lover)
Beth – where does the time go? I thought it’d only been 2 years since you lost your son. 4 years!!! I’m still sorry that you did
After the Board meeting, Vince went to register the cats with a vet down here. On the way home he stopped at DD. I did have one of the vanilla iced donuts and almost died when I saw the calories. But I think I can regain myself
Tracey – we most likely won’t be here when all the work is being done. But...the guy is putting in the new toilet right now. Looks like we need a new hot water heater. We just found that it’s rusting (new this year). If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Hopefully, he can put it in before we leave. As far as the bathroom reno, well, that will just have to be done when we’re gone. Surprisingly, Vince accepts this. So glad you’ll go to your graduation. Will they be streaming it? I remember seeing M’s graduation and I know they streamed Jess’. If they do, be sure to give us the link
deb – we make a cold sandwich at the soup kitchen if needed just so the people have something to eat. Then again, if we have something extra (like extra pieces of pizza) sometimes we put it in a box and just give it to people
Mo – aren’t avocados high in potassium? Vince...exercise...he’s the person who is waiting for Vitamin E to be developed….lol I’m really not coordinated enough to get a workout from a zumba/dance DVD so I really don’t do them.
Lynn – congrats on the weight loss! I’m so sorry about Lynn. I know what you’re going thru. One of our cats, Lexi, had dementia. She would walk around the house with the “deer in the headlights” look, she lost control of her bowels, she’d forget where the litter box was, finally one day she was walking from the kitchen into the bedroom peeing, she didn’t even realize she was doing it. That’s when we knew that the dementia was getting worse.
Heidi – Jess texted us a pic of the snow by her. She can keep it as far as I’m concerned
Lynn – I just found the EggLife wraps down here (never saw them before), looked interesting, so I got some. Can’t wait to try them. Never heard of carbo nada pasta. Where do you get it? I’m getting to where I actually prefer shiataki noodles to regular pasta. When we had to have Clyde put down, how I cried!

Did Patrick Godeau’s Lean Hot Body DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do a pilates DVD. UNLESS I have time to walk to this place, Anytime Fitness. I see where you can get a free 14 day key fob. I want to make sure I can use it at any time, not just when someone is there. Is it for 14 consecutive days (I would think so)? I do like their stairstepper, I don’t like the kind at the Y. So I would go there probably on a Sat. just to use that.
We REALLY need to get the bathroom done. Right now the toilet paper dispenser is across the bathroom so you have to reach to get the tp. Personally, I hate that. Vince doesn’t want it next to the toilet, he doesn’t want to have to turn a bit to get the tp. I WILL NOT give in on this, I hate it so much. I suggested to him that we get a tp holder where you just slide the tp on it, he takes it off and holds it (or puts it on the counter), uses it, and puts it back. No, he doesn’t want to hold it. Then why not put it on the floor? “I’d put it on the counter”. That’s OK. Now he saw this thing on utube where there’s this thing you put the tp on but then it slides out. How far from the toilet will that be? I don’t want the tp rubbing up against you. So we shall see, but I won’t give in, I hate it that much.
Deb – I’m so sorry to hear about how fast MIL is going downhill
VERY VERY windy here today.
Tracey – Lauren was trying to help. Trying being the operative word. Bet she was proud of her “help”. But it gives you something else to remember and laugh
Mo – Vince was supposed to increase his potassium (I think for his heart). Little did he know but I made avacado brownies. He ate them all. See, he is the pickeest eater on the face of the earth. But little does he know the foods he eats. If he ever knew that I make tofu brownies for him, he wouldn’t eat them. So I “accidentally on purpose” forget to tell him they’re tofu brownies, I just tell him they’re brownies.
M – I really like mowing the lawn. This is “me” time. Plus, I get a lot of steps in. Congrats to you
After the Y went to WM for a few things. While I was there, Vince added some things to the shopping list, but I had already left WM. Since we went to Lowe’s to check out bathroom vanities and were right by WM, I suggested we stop and get the things Vince wanted. He doesn’t want to walk into my bathroom to use my toothpaste. So I’ll have to go and buy it. Well, I don’t want to make a special trip, especially since we were right there. I’ll get it when I get it. Also went to Home Depot to check out their vanities. Personally, I liked theirs better. Now we’re home, Vince wants to work out this tp thing. Well, I’m NOT budging.
Baking a banana bread right now. It’s a mix (don’t have a lot of baking things down here) but I used too much water. Guess I’ll just bake it longer.
Earlier we were just sitting here in the kitchen and heard something rumbling. There was a launch. There wasn’t anything in the paper or anything about it. So we didn’t know to go see it
Lanette – yea for the eggs. Just bought some. $6 a dozen. Yikes!
Kim – I absolutely have to try your way of cleaning the toilet when I get home. I’m excited

Good afternoon all - just popping in real quick, and will catch up on all the posts tomorrow morning.
Not a good day in the Buck house - we took Libby to help her to the rainbow bridge this morning. She woke me up at 3 to let her out, and then had an episode where she couldn't use her left legs. It was time. She had a wonderful life and we'll miss her terribly.
Please forgive my non-catching up today

(((Lynn))) Such sadness when you have to say Good Bye to your beloved pet!
Kim ~ Enjoyed reading how you and your housemate are cutting expenses!
MO ~ Hope you get the needed rest that your body is seeking.
Lisa ~ You sure do have a lot of projects going on! I can't even imagine!
Machka ~ I am sorry that you are having to work and do all the care taking at home. It seems like you are doing a good job and also finding some personal time as well.
I read that many of you are keeping your heat turned down in order to get through these very cold days. Must admit that I have been raising our thermostat up to 74. My husband is COLD all the time and we will manage the bill.
My debit card got hacked some how and I am so glad my credit union sends alerts for all transactions daily. I called and had the card cancelled and was able to secure a new one. Glad they were able to quickly get a new one issued because I never use cash and I don't use a credit card!

I keep my thermostat at 72 during the day and then low enough at night so it doesn't come on until time to get up. My heat is electric---furnace and heat pump. I economize in other ways. My wood stove is more for entertainment than heat.
Lynn what a tough time for you 🐾😢😿

Lynn - so sorry. Libby let you know it was time. Glad you were able to get her in quickly. I think I'm not the only of us here reaching for a hanky. Boxers are such neat dogs, loved that you'd had four of them!
Barbie - your crockpot meal with chicken thighs, black beans and mole sounds wonderful. Would you mind sharing the recipe?
Rita - good luck finding your next spot! Will you be looking for another campground? Hope your cold weather there is done for a long time!
Kim - I think it was me looking for tips for getting stains out of the toilet. I've dumped a lot of cheap white vinegar in there overnight but never used it full strength, I will have to give it a try and get the water out of the bowl first. Thank you!
I usually keep my place at 65, turn it down to 63 or 64 at night. As it is, my electric bills are way up there since I'm not using the woodstove very much.
Carol - glad you were able to get that debit card cancelled and reissued so quickly. What a world.
Keto Recipes - Ladies, I've been trying some "keto" recipes. I'm not doing keto, generally keep my carbs under 125 gm and protein around 100+ gm, and over 30 gm of fiber. But I'm always looking for high protein snacks.
Anyways, I made chaffles - 1 egg thoroughly mixed with 2 tablespoons almond flour and 1/2 c shredded cheddar cheese. Made 2 mini waffles and they were good! Cooked 5 minutes.
Also made Chicken patties/bites. 1 10 oz can chicken breast, drained, thoroughly mixed with 1/2 c shredded mozzarella cheese and 1 egg, plus a hefty sprinkle each of garlic and onion powder. I scooped out 5 mounds onto a lined cookie sheet (I used that quick release aluminum foil) and squished them down into patties. Baked at 350F for 10 minutes then flipped them and stuck them back in the oven for 7 or 8 minutes. They got nicely browned and sort of crispy on the edges. A winner!!
Cottage cheese wraps - I want to try making "wraps" from cottage cheese thinly spread out on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. I've seen several recipes. I can't recall right now if there are ingredients other than cottage cheese, but the bakers showed how they put meat and veggies on these "sheets" and rolled them up like a tortilla and they didn't appear to fall apart. Clever!
Missing Tina and Annie by the way. Hope Tina escaped the fire.
Time to check the hens. 2 eggs so far today.

The mass on Princess Tumble’s right front leg cae back and is bigger than it was when it popped at the vet’s last October. Was lucky enough to get her in on an emergency same day basis to our preferred vet. He removed it surgically and sent it and the margins off to the lab. Praying for that best of all words: “benign.” Meanwhile, I’ve been pushing spring. Transplanted a bunch of red romaine sprouts into a six pack, THEN realized the didn’t even yet have true leaves. Still anxious for spring, I finally cleared out 3 large pots and planted radishes, watermelon radishes, carrots and snow peas. The deluge (4”? 5”? more???) expected this weekend will water them in well.
Belated welcome @justawingnut1971 Lynn in NC! Week, 7, that’s great! :brokenheart: prayers said for you and your Libby at this difficult time. There’s a look in their eyes that tells you when they know it's time. ((hugs held extra long))
Lanette hooray for USB ports! Wish there was only one type of Universal Serial Bus connection instead of the nine different ones. What is it about the word “universal” the designers didn’t understand?
Cindy, yah, nope, not warm enough to grow them outside, even here in the “banana belt” tho’ I’ve seen banana trees surviving just not fruiting. Was hoping it was warm enough in the house . . . ;} Will check that link out and cross my fingers.
Only through pg 25 but the timer just chimed and dinner is ready.

Lanette, This is my variation of Jake's chicken mole.
*8.25 ounce jar Dona Maria mole (I bought this at QFC)
*about two cups of black beans soaked overnight--I didn't measure the beans, I just used what was left in a bag that Jake bought a long time ago.
*2 packets of boneless skinless chicken thighs (I used the ones I bought at Costco that come in three packets together0
*three heaping tablespoons of peanut butter
*two cups of low sodium chicken broth
* two tablespoons of garlic powder
* a heaping tablespoon of chili powder (less if you like less spice)
I cooked this in a slow cooker on low for about six hours.
Put everything but the chicken in the pot and stir together, then add the chicken and stir in with the sauce. No need to cut up the chicken because the long cooking will help it break up easily.
This made enough for seven pint jars to freeze. Each jar is two servings for me (so two meals) with tortillas or rice.Barbie

Wanted to check in as I am up to page 19. The weather has been terrible here. Over 11 inches of snow and temps below zero. Today it was almost 20 and to be in 30-40's next couple days. I have had to keep the driveway and sidewalks clear and this last time I hired someone. This weather has been having a real depressed effect on me. DH was to go back to work this last Monday, but his boss called Sunday night and said the big boss decided he can not come back until he can do full duty. So he goes back to the doctor on the 27th and will see. I am still looking for a job and had a couple interviews.
Also dealing with insurance over my diabetic meds. I have been on the trulicity shot for a couple years and my AC1 has been 5.2-5.4. Since I lost my insurance the shots will now cost almost $900 per month. Applied for several programs and no luck. So talked to doctor today and I will be going back on metformin.
Heather--Love the valentine cards you made each other. Sending hugs for DS and family over the loss of his friend and boss. We got a call Tuesday morning a friend had passed away during the night. They think a blood clot to his lung.
Beth--Great news, so happy for you.
Rita and Evelyn-- depression is so hard to understand. I know there are those that have worse things to deal with, but this last couple weeks the night panic attacks and spacing off just happens.
Tracey--What a great memory of you and your grandpa.
We have a problem with bread getting hard, but cheese seems to mold. It is wrapped in baggie with air out and in the drawer in refrigerator.

I haven't purchased eggs in a long, long time. I have trouble eating them, and my husband hasn't asked for them.
I found out recently that the juice from canned chickpeas can be whipped and used as a vegan, lactose-free whipped cream!
On temperature, I do best when the INSIDE temperature is between 18C (64.4F) and 20C (68F) during the day and 15C-16C (59 - 61F) at night.
But when I'm outside, it can be warmer than that.
Yes, my husband is not happy about not being able to do things. I've come up with several suggestions and he's thinking about them. And I push him to do things like make some meals. I think it was really good for him to be out there with me when I mowed.
He isn't one to disappear into a good novel or something, like I can.

Well, we signed the contract with the guy to do the bathroom and install a new hot water heater. One bad thing is that from my understanding, he doesn’t install the one-piece bathtubs, only tile. Not sure why. I really wanted the one piece, I just think they look so sleek. Maybe it’s because the one (or three, that would be my guess at the condo) is more difficult to get up the stairs. I do want to confirm this, tho.
Went to Lowe’s and Home Depot and looked at vanities. My absolute criteria is that the vanity has to have (to me) at least 2 drawers, but Vince thinks he’d like 3, which I can live with. The other absolute is that the vanity must be flush with the floor, not standing on feet. We have one with the feet at home and it can be such a pain to clean under. Also, things (like cat toys) get under it and they’re hard to get out. So that’s why I don’t want something with feet.
The banana bread that I put too much water in turned out horrible. I had to throw the whole thing away. Well, I walked to the dollar store to see if they carried any and they don’t. So I went to the food store near there (I also had to go to the bathroom at this point) and they were out. So I guess when I go to the store again, I’ll have to get it. But on the good side, I did get in over 13,000 steps today
Oh, for jollies I checked the price of eggs at this supermarket. Aldi and WM are both $6/doz. This store was $7/doz
Lynn – my heart breaks for you. But you gave Libby a good life and know that she is forever grateful to you for that. She loved you as much as you loved her. When we had to put down Sadie (one of the cats), I will swear to this day that he looked at me as if to say “thank you”. That has helped me
Vicki – sounds like you’re having a virtual heat wave. So sorry to hear about your friend
Well, guess it’s about time for bed.

Normally, I might have gone for a shorter ride, but I wanted to finish 200 km of cycling for the month of February today.

So glad it’s the weekend. Just a short trip to the local shops today, and Skype with family after lunch tomorrow.
I have a spreadsheet and short strength report to do this morning for my walking group. Prep for Monday painters and group accounts to do later.
🤗🤗🤗 and 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 for those who need them.

I had a rare bath this morning!
I managed to get in and out of the huge, high sided, bath without using a bath mat, though I had it ready, propped up, beside the bath to use if necessary. So, a great improvement! It used to be quite uncomfortable sitting on the rubber, with big holes in.
Still haven't washed my hair though. For some reason I don't like doing my body and my hair at the same time.I will wash it before the girls arrive for ceramic painting tomorrow. The parents are undertaking coach training for their cycling club. They are joint presidents this year. As if they haven't got enough to do!
Egg sandwiches for lunch, and halloumi curry for tonight.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx1
