Losing fat doesn't hurt. Losing belly fat also doesn't hurt. The fat doesn't scream either when it leaves your body. However, fasting does not lead to fat loss if you still eat too many calories.

You don't have to fast to lose weight. You have to burn more calories than you consume. You still need to fuel your body.

Hurt? no. It can be uncomfortable for some, if you're getting really hungry. It's also not neccesary.

Hurt as in discomfort, or hurt as in cause injury?

Probably mostly neither of those, but some people may be extra hungry during the fasting periods and find that uncomfortable (but some other people find it more satisfying to have one or two bigger meals daily rather than three or so smaller ones spread over more time, so may find intermittent fasting leads to less discomfort for them.)

Also, fasting - especially long fasts, like more than a day - might risk injury to people in certain circumstances or with certain health conditions. People not in those cases would probably be OK.

Eating too few calories, no matter how a person spreads those calories over time, can be uncomfortable, and potentially even injurious.

On the other hand, eating too many calories can be uncomfortable or injurious in some cases, too.

There's a sweet spot in their somewhere, though: Food timing and calorie level (plus reasonable nutrition, ideally) that is reasonably comfortable, non-injurious, even health promoting.

As others have said, if the goal is weight loss, fasting is completely optional.
