Hello

I'm looking to get back to being healthy. I've put off my needs for almost 10 years! Gained 40 lbs, and feel like I've lost all muscle. Physically drained doing basic tasks. I don't think this is normal for 46. 🤔 My mental health is suffering as well. I feel like it goes hand in hand. I really hope this community is as friendly as it seems. I'm looking forward to this journey. Feeling very inspired reading other posts. Thank you all for taking the time to read this. 😊

    Hello, and welcome!

Good for you - in many senses of that phrase - for focusing on yourself and your health in this way. That will benefit you big time, but also be a good model for others around you, plus improve the energy you have to devote to all parts of life, so it's not IMO a pure selfish move as some people worry it may be. The airline people have it right: We need to put on our own oxygen mask first, then help others, for everyone's benefit . . . metaphorically speaking.

One thing I'd say: I can understand getting weaker with time, but also remember that that extra 40 pounds is also sort of like a tax on daily energy and strength. Imagine spending every moment of every day carrying around 40 pounds of . . . I dunno . . . a big bag of birdseed, or kitty litter, roughly 9 standard-sized bricks, or something like that that you can relate to. Exhausting! Strength-draining!

I lost around 50 pounds 9+ years ago, and the difference in quality of life for me was huge, and very positive. I'd predict similar is possible for you.

If an unapologetically hedonistic aging hippie flake like me - someone with severely limited willpower, motivation or discipline - can do this, I think any more normal adult can do it, too.

I'm cheering for you to succeed: IME it's more than worth the effort!

I think most of us are in your situation. I definitely found it shocking when I found that lifting something that was just 20 pounds to be heavy. I need to be able to lift about 3 times that to be able to handle an electric wheel chair. Here's to getting healthier and building strength!
