You do need to butn more than you eat, but you burn calories just by being alive, not just from exercise and activity. Just those 'being alive' calories are somewhere above 1000 calories depending on height, weight, sex, age (1400kcal for me for example, 42 years old, female, 5ft5, 140lbs).

As Lietchi says, your exercise calories burnt are on top of the calories that your body burns just existing. I'm 5'4, 199lbs, 45 and female and the calories burned by my body to keep me alive if I were in a coma are around 1540. Add to that my exercise cals of about 750 a day, and I need around 2290 to maintain. I eat around 1400 a day and lose at a very satisfying rate.

You need to eat a decent amount of calories to stay satisfied, to take in enough nutrients to stay healthy and keep adequately fueled.

Oh honey that's WAY too fast!! You need to eat more or you're going to crash and burn and make yourself sick!

Definitely start eating more. Eat what mfp suggests and see how you feel. You didn't gain the extra weight overnight. You aren't going to lose it overnight. And weight loss isn't a race. You will be taking care of yourself everyday for the rest of your life. You have time to do it safely.
