New to MFP

Just wanted to say "Hey y'all"! I'm new to MFP app and looking forward to a healthier, leaner looking me :)

Wanting to drop 50+ pounds, averaging 2lbs/week. 🤞🏻for a good start. Wish me luck and open to any good advise.

    Hello, and welcome!

Can I offer some maybe-unwanted advice, speaking as someone who did lose 50 pounds? Unless well over 200 pounds, relatively young, with good health history and an overall low-stress life, I'd encourage you to consider a slower but easier loss rate.

Fast loss has downsides. I accidentally lost too fast at first, not 2 pounds a week but close, because MFP materially underestimates my calorie needs (rare, but possible). I did great at first, good energy, not hungry . . . then suddenly hit a wall. I was weak and fatigued, took multiple weeks to recover back to normal strength/energy even though I adjusted my goals as soon as I realized. No one needs any of that.

In addition, slower loss is easier to stick with long enough to lose a meaningful total amount of weight - realistically, it's going to take many weeks to months, even if losing fast - plus helps put a focus on finding new, sustainable habits that can help maintain the healthy weight once we get there. (I'm in year 9 of maintaining now, so that's an experiential perspective.) Most people find maintenance more challenging than loss.

Sometimes a gradual loss rate can get a person to goal weight in less calendar time than a more aggressive approach that may cause bouts of deprivation-triggered overeating, breaks in the action, or giving up altogether.

I'm not trying to be mean here. Maybe think of me as a concerned but interfering internet auntie who'd truly like to help? Reaching and staying at a healthy weight has been a huge quality of life improvement for me, and I want that for everyone, including you.

Wishing you success, no matter what path you choose!
