Lower back pain

Hi, I have hurt my lower back and aggravated an old injury. I need to lose weight and strengthen my core to add my recovery. I already do yoga, but any other ideas diet or exercise wise to help lower back pain?

Hello Robyn, I am MG. MFP does not want its' members to offer up medical advice etc even if this is our field. With this in mind, my first advice is to do just that, seek medical advice. Here is why: far too often people ignore their symptoms and look for other ways for relief.I truly can see why.In truth, the safer route for your total wellness is to get it checked out.I always say," It is always better to be over prepared( careful) than not be."

I will add there are tones of super delicious anti-inflammatory foods available.Again, it takes a team for wellness to happen.

One thing I know in my heart, whatever your wellness goals are dear. You got this!

I fractured 4 ribs & my spine in May 2023 in a car wreck. I saw a spine specialist & PT was prescribed. My PT was to strengthen my core. From there I built a workout routine from nothing to lifting weights 5 days a week. I'm 57 & in the best shape of my life. The best way to get a workout routine & heal is to seek the advice of a specialist. You need a personalized plan to get stronger & avoid injuring yourself. I can't tell you how awesome my PT were. I still do many of the exercises I was doing in PT, and then I built on them, over time, from there. See a doctor & listen to your body. If something hurts, tell your doctor. You want to build a strong body without exacerbated any injury.

You don’t say what the injury is, but ideally you need to see a specialist to diagnose which muscles / joints are injured, and then devise a programme from there. If it’s muscular, then a sports physio or S&C coach is a good bet.

The “core” covers a lot of your torso and there are tonnes of exercises you can do. But you need to be careful if you're injured and build up slowly: I have a weak right side and my right QL will get stressed if I don’t take care. I work on my back, sides and front to build up strength but I do it with the guidance of an S&C coach. Can you find a specialist in your area to help you?

Re yoga, bird dog and cobra may help. Also pallof press, which you can do at home with bands. Don't do anything if it brings acute pain or leads to aggravating though.

Going forwards, losing weight will help. Maybe you can walk more, and ofc diet.

Once you're well into recovery, progressive lifting may bring major benefits for strengthening the area to hopefully reduce future flare-ups.
