Limitations for my physical activity - recommendations appreciated.

Hey all,

So it's a bit complex and I'm working with my doc and have been given the go ahead on this. I will take nothing as medical advice and will discuss with doc. before starting anything new.

Background: lots of autoimmune disease. I was on a walk and got heatstroke on 8/21. Since then, I've had migraines almost every day, and if I exert myself one is guaranteed. I talked to my doctor (both pcp and rheumatology) and they said I can expect symptoms to continue even in to spring (its the end of summer currently). I was also told I can exercise but I have to start very slow and build endurance slowly as well.

Yall I'm going crazy. I was taking daily walks of about three miles (thats how I got heatstroke) and I'm being told I can start at like half a mile.

I would greatly appreciate any recommendations or personal experience with chronic health issues and working out!

Well, I had chronic migraines for about 25 years. Exercise - or getting overheated in any way - definitely would trigger a migraine.

Through the years I tried all kinds of fixes, from diet/nutrition to stress reduction and lots of prescribed medications, both for prophylaxis and for stopping a migraine once it started.

I'm female and the thing that finally stopped them was menopause. I finally started living after menopause. Had I known I would have had a surgical menopause decades earlier.

I feel for you, and I'm hoping for you that yours is not a long-term chronic condition like mine was.

My thoughts are - this is a great time to work on flexibility and balance! I would ease into some yoga (indoors preferably unless it's cool outside) and slowly build it up. Also, there's lots of great info/videos on all kinds of stretching and balance exercises. This will build the small, control muscles that normally don't get worked but not overall tax your body too hard. Note: Yoga CAN get very challenging and even make you out of breath so definitely EASE into it and LISTEN to your body.
I spend most of my time around people in their 70's+ and am firmly convinced that yoga and mobility exercises are one of the primary keys to enjoying life as we age. GL!
