Moving

hi guys, I have not used this app for a long time but I’m back because I want and need to get another 20 pounds off and get motivated to move. I’m love the outdoors but most times I choose my cozy couch and I don’t want to get up and moving.

    Good news: Weight loss is possible with zero added exercise. Bad news: That means eating less than you have been. That's fewer calories, obviously, not less food volume, less nutrition, maybe not even less satiety (if you play your cards well).

    Exercise is great for a body, good to do for a lot of reasons. I'm a believer, personally. In fact, I was very active - working out pretty hard 6 days most weeks - while I stayed obese for a dozen years. For most of us, exercising only burns 5% or so of our total daily calorie burn, maybe up to 10-15% if we go at it really often and really hard . . . but it's still a small fraction.

    I didn't add any material amount of exercise to lose down to a healthy weight (and stay there for nearly 10 years since). I managed my calorie intake.

    For most of us, that's a more powerful tool than exercise. I can not-eat a candy bar in zero seconds. To work off a standard-sized candy bar's worth of calories, I need to work out pretty hard for the better part of an hour. (NB, I'm non-large. 😉) That doesn't mean I never eat candy bars, either: It means I know how to enjoy them in reasonable moderation now.

    You can do this. Sure, add some movement. It lets us eat a bit more - and possibly get better nutrition if we make good choices - while losing at the same sensible pace. But it's balancing calorie intake from food with our activity level, whatever our activity level, that's the direct driver of weight loss.
