pre log your days or workout some to lose more.

Then again, are you eating enough in the first place?

Yes i'm eating enough, I just hate to go over the 1200 calories.
Then no, you aren't. The 1200 is a goal. You should eat that much.
Took the words right outta my mouth. 1200 isn't really enough for most women. Are you at least eating back exercise cals? Goal means GOAL, not a mark to fall short of. Considering that 1200 is the bare minimum for women, going over by a hundred cals or more a couple days a week isn't going to hurt ya. Probably do ya some good!

I snack in the evening sometimes. Plain greek yogurt with fruit & honey is a good one, or a few squares of dark chocolate dipped in peanut butter. Or a scoop of ice cream with half a banana & some chocolate syrup! Budget it into your calories - or better yet, change your settings on MFP to get a higher daily goal - if you set your goal to lose 2lbs a week, change it to 1lb, which is a better target since you have less than 50lbs to lose (going by your ticker on your profile).

    Good luck!

No I don't add back my work out caleries. I'm so undisciplined i'm afraid if i am not strict I will fall. I have to be very strict or i royally mess up. It's all or nothing at all with me.

You're being strict, but wrong. You need to be strict, but to the right things. You're doing it the wrong way.

If I reach my calorie goal and It's too late to exercise but I still want to snack on something, I grab some fruit! I get a handful of blueberries or some dried fruit snack or apples.. yummy.

I have this problem too! I'm going to start brushing my teeth as soon as I hit my calorie limit. Seems to help!

No... you're not. You're a nurse (and on your feet a lot, I would assume), and eating only 1200? No wonder you're hungry. Have a snack.

I'm 56 and it's very hard for me to lose weight. I've been heavy most of my adult life. I work out and do the treadmill on my days off. If i eat the 1200 I will maintain but not lose. (I think) I've been on this plan since July 31 and only lost 13 pounds. Not alot. I don't get hungry all the time but sometimes I just want to snack.

13 lbs in 8 weeks is a lot of weight loss. That's at or near the absolute fastest you should be losing weight.

    You're not eating enough
  • I had this same issue. The way I got around it was to try to budget just a few calories for the night for a snack like some light popcorn, and to also try to eat most of my food earlier in the day.

I kind of realized that, for me, it wasn't usually that I was hungry at night, just that I was kind of bored and wanted something to do. If you're that kind of hungry, just load up a plate full of zero-calorie food like baby carrots, celery, baby spinach, etc. It will satisfy your "I want to eat something!" feeling without ruining your diet.

    Best of luck!

I try to plan on having 200-300 calories left for a snack at night, I am a lifelong late evening eater. Sometimes just a glass of milk and a banana, or a bowl of cereal, whole wheat bread with PB. Just a little something to keep me from going to bed feeling hungry.

good luck on disagreeing with all of the good advice... your problem is that you're not eating enough. I know that's not an easy thing to grasp our accept.. for whatever reason... but do what you want.

I can guarantee you that you'd be happier saving a few calories then having ice cream at night than you will by looking down at a plate full of celery and carrots.

I read your wall of text. You're still not eating enough. It doesn't matter how annoyed or frustrated you get.

  • I don't snack at night. I don't even after 5pm-ish (on weekdays). But if I do ever get hungry I chew gum. or a peppermint. ;p

I know I like to snack in the evenings, and chomp on snacks in movie theaters and at ball games. So I learned how to do all those things while still staying within my calorie allowance. This way, even when I stop dieting, I can take that skill with me to maintain my weight loss.

It may not sound ultra disciplined and strict, because I'm not denying myself anything, but it works. And that is all that matters.

    Yes.

I've tried not to admonish the OP here but honestly her attitude sounds like all the reasons eating lighter/healthier never worked for me. I just started to "believe" in the math of calories in/out and wow, lost 43 lb beyond what I thought I could lose....

I eat carrots. I figure if I'm hungry enough, they'll taste good. Only 30 calories for a large carrot.
  • Drink tea :) herbal tea at night, something with chamomile can relax you :)

    Ok whatever.

I thank you all who responded to my question. My question wasn't if I was eating enough. My question was low cal snacking food. But thanx anyway

This thread turned into a debate on my caloric intake.

People are just trying to help you by listening to your body. Something which, by all accounts, you should be doing.

Well you asked the wrong question.

You're doing something, and you're experiencing an unwanted effect. The proper way to address this is not to have some super-low calorie snacking.

You want to know how to satisfy the evening snacking urge? Give your body enough calories by eating some more at night.

You're in massive denial about what's actually going on, and you freely admit you're too scared to do it right. To me, you sound like you're on the verge of finally giving in and eating a pizza and pint of ice cream one night then never logging into MFP again. You need to do this the right way.

  • This thread turned into a debate on my caloric intake.

It is not a debate when everyone else is right but you......
  • Okay so:

    1. I'm scared to eat over 1200 calories. I've only lost 13 pounds in 2 months, oh noes!

    2. I'm not hungry . . . umm, err, I just want to, uhh, eat something? But it's not because I'm hungry! I just . . . want something more than water. . . but really not hungry

    3. I don't eat back my exercise calories because I'm scared I'll eat too much.

#3 please go have a talk with #2 - but you're NOT hungry, right?

Your problem is 1 and 3 and you're in denial about 2. Also, you have a poor relationship with food because you're afraid of it.

You are hungry. You need to plan your meals effectively and eat at least your BMR, and if other posters are correct, you have an active job as a nurse. So you're probably at least lightly active just from work, and then you exercise, too.

I'm not going to say the M word or the S word here, but I will say that you will be weak, tired, and more likely to get sick when you eat under 1200. When you eat at least your BMR every day, you'll still maintain a calorie deficit just due to moving around and not being in a coma, and you'll have more energy for your day to day life.

No I don't add back my work out caleries. I'm so undisciplined i'm afraid if i am not strict I will fall. I have to be very strict or i royally mess up. It's all or nothing at all with me.
I guess you're going with "nothing" then - this isn't how MFP works. This website is set up that you are supposed to eat back your exercise cals - ESPECIALLY important if you're set at the oh-so-common 1200 cals because you set your weekly weight loss goal to 2lbs a week.

Your daily goal has a deficit built in already. Meaning eat TO GOAL, all the cals, every day, and do zero exercise, and you'll lose weight. When you factor in the exercise, you're creating a ginormous deficit, way too big, and doing yourself more harm than good. Food is fuel! This is why the burned cals are added back into your daily goal, and your NET cals should be at goal each day.

Yes, I realized you asked about snacking at night, but that question is related to not eating enough during the day, leading you to be looking for something to eat at the end of the day with next to zero cals because you think you can't eat any more than 1200 cals, which is dead wrong.

If you're an "all or nothing" type of gal, you'd be doing yourself a huge favor to figure out the "all" part of how this website works, as well as how to properly fuel and nourish your body with the right amount of cals.

    Good luck.
