This is not actually a redesign... this was a private artist making a statement.

"Average Barbie, who has not been endorsed by Mattel, is modeled off body measurements of a normal 19-year-old American girl using data from the CDC. "
Still, I like it better.0 -
nothing against vegan ok!0 -
New Barbie has eerily similar body to mine... freaked out a little.0

Looks like she could birth an Eriksen baby.
Nah, too short!0 -
Shes adorable and has a bubble butt! Haha
Hey watch it, that's my butt0 -
I think it's terrible! Dolls aren't supposed to look like real people, they're toys. Her head is huge in comparison with her body because a huge head is doll-like. Her body is very long in comparison with her huge head because a long body is more fun to play with (you can get the clothes on easier, and all sorts of things like that).
The original designers of Barbie dolls, which no doubt included plenty of women on the design teams throughout the decades, weren't looking to design a doll in order to oppress women or make anyone feel bad about themselves - they were trying to make a doll that kids would want to play with! If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If someone develops self-esteem problems because of playing with Barbie dolls... well, they are probably too old to be playing with dolls to begin with. Self-esteem issues may be among the least of their problems.0 -
The "new/average" Barbie doesnt look the same. Her face is different...
And what is with the stupid thigh gap??????????????? That is not "average"0 -
This just in: Ken breaks up with new Barbie.
That "new Barbie" is not official and is not endorsed by Mattel. It's a creation by an artist who used data from the CDC for the average measurements of teenage girls and created a more realistic body shape to contrast with original Barbie.0 -
I wonder if they are going to make a fat Ken to go with her!0

Until Ken grows some genitalia, he can't complain.0

I will say that this 'artist's staement' version (apparently not the new barbie) has a rectangular figure as opposed to an hourglass, which is probably more common to the general population (the rectangle). But, the hourglass was 'ideal' in the 1950's when Barbie was created. More Marilyn and Grace Kelly. Twiggy look didn't become fad until after that.0 -
Barbie's waist changed in 2000... And I could swear that my Barbies in the 70's had much larger boobs. Maybe it just seemed like it due to the pre-2000's waist.0

She looks fat now.0

I'm not sure how I feel... obviously the original Barbie is way too skinny, but the new Barbie seems oddly proportioned to me. I think it will just take some getting used to!
This, except I think I like it much better! But agree with "oddly proportioned" since I'm so used to seeing her with the long skinny neck!0 -

No, I think you're right. I also think she used to have a bigger chest.0
