That has nothing to do with her being a woman.

Yes it does. Dislike of muscle definition on their body is a characteristic exclusive to women. I'm not saying that all women dislike muscle definition.

I've heard of lots of dudes that also dislike having muscle. I remember one dude (either on here or on bodybuilding.com, I can't remember) that said he wanted to look like the "no carbs after 6pm, trust me bro" guy.

Well now that we've gotten down to the important question in this thread, it can get rolling along.

thanks for all the responses and my apologies for using words like 'bulking' - thats what it looks like to me - overall inches lost but my legs certainly are bulkier.

I understand what you mean, they are looking more muscular because the fat is leaving and the muscle is beginning to show through, and as a woman you don't like muscle showing on your body. So what you need to do is keep your body fat % a little higher to avoid muscle definition showing through, and/or do lots of low resistance cardio workouts.

That doesn't make sense. She said she:

    1) Wants to tone legs
    2) Legs are losing inches
    3) Legs are getting bulky

These things cannot all possibly be true. If her legs are losing inches, they are getting smaller, which is the opposite of bulk so #3 is false. If she meant her legs are getting too defined despite getting smaller, then she isn't interested in muscle tone so #1 is false.

It's simply impossible to comprehend her complaint as outlined.

True she did not word things properly, but I understand what she wants because I understand women and what they want.
    1-Wants to tone legs-
Meaning, she doesn't want cellulite and flabby fat giggly legs. She wants them tight and firm, but without muscle definition lines showing through, except maybe a few of the most basic lines, such as the soleus differentiating from the tibealis anterior(calf cleavage) but without the peroneus longus and brevis showing through to create that third line on the side of the calf. She also does not want the gastrocnemius to differentiate from the soleus on the back of the calf muscle. As for thighs she wants a similar one line leg cleavage between the quads and hamstrings but only one.

    2-legs losing inches
meaning her legs are losing fat.

    3-legs are getting 'bulky'
This is where she made her most erroneous interpretation. What she means is her leg muscles are beginning to show through and have the appearance of sticking out and getting bulkier because the fat is vanishing from the insertion and origin points of the muscles near the joints, making the areas around the joints look smaller and the muscles appear bigger even though her legs are actually smaller in circumference. She may also be dissatisfied with the muscle definition that is showing through like I described above as she feels it makes her look too muscular.

So what she needs is to keep a large enough subcutaneous fat layer over her muscles to hide the lines that differentiate the individual muscles, but not so much fat that her legs become giggly. This may prove to be very difficult for her.

So she wants all the benefits of having legs without fat and jiggly skin but without actually being able to see any muscle.

Someone needs to explain to her how flesh works, because she doesn't get it.

BTW...... your use of muscle names in part 1 was more than a bit pretentious.

Assuming this isn't sarcastic, it is totally nonsensical, sexist, wrong, and offensive.

    Apology accepted.

I did not apologize. Your words were sexist and offensive. It's sad that grown adults think in these simplistic immature terms.

    that is absolutely 110% incorect.

it may be a TREND... but there are plenty of guys out there who have no interest in being shredded- merely "not fat"

Which seems to be the OP's case.

I concure. She is not bulking.

Bulking menas to get bigger- to increase in size. If she has lost inches- than she/he is not bulking.

merely losing fat and you can SEE the muscles under the fat.... I would actually put forward that your average woman in the gym doesn't ACTUALLY know what she wants. She THINKS she knows what she wants- meaning an idea shape magazine fed her- but what she thinks she wants and how to get there are 2 totally different things. One of the most typical goals of a gym go-er is "to lose weight" and "firm/tone" up.

That's actually almost all diet- and has little to do with weight lifting at all.

LMAO? Really, you have never heard a man say they didn't want to get too muscular? You live in a very small world then.

The reason I keep reading these forums is for the comedy gold. I'm not sure what is better, this comment or the other about how you know women.

Keep it coming. Love this stuff!

Yeah, I must live in a "small world" also.

Although his statement was a bit ridiculous, the attempts to discredit him aren't any better.

Just because it's easier for a man to gain LBM, it's still not something that happens accidentally. Why would a man complain about not wanting to get muscular (here's a tip: just don't live in the gym)?

Perhaps some men say such a thing to justify being small, but I've never heard it said.

Oh, and to the other poster that said many men don't want to be "shredded:"
The OP was complaining about seeing basic definition. I don't think being "shredded" was her issue.

Sadly, my already big legs seem to be bulking up even more - I am beginning to see a more defined look to my legs so clearly what I'm doing is having an effect but I can't afford to bulk up my legs in this way.

Notwithstanding what some people will tell you, weight training does tend to make body parts bigger, so if you are already concerned about being large in certain areas and are training primarily for aesthetics and basic strength, you might want to train those areas less intensely, or not at all. Definitely don't train to failure.

They don't get bigger while eating at a deficit.

Besides the OP already said her legs are getting smaller.

OP, you might be extrapolating results that won't come, and that's good for what you want. If your muscles are suddenly hard and seem bigger, that does happen but it doesn't keep on going in a linear fashion. It's just what happens at first from the muscle changes of beginning weight lifting.

Also, you might have muscles on your legs that build faster than others or started larger from daily life or genetics. Skip them in your weight training if you like. I work to build my inner thighs and don't really work on building my hams, for instance. No problem. Just don't do lifting exercises that use them all in large amounts. Do more isolated lifting moves if it makes you more comfortable about how your legs build. They're your legs :)
