Every belly dancing instructor I've seen is overweight.

Just an observation.

Seriously, this seems to defy odds. If they were a sample of average population, at least 1/3 of them would be normal weight.
And, it is an active job, and they work out all the time, yet, wow!

Or have your experience been different?

Aren't they kind of required to have a high body fat percentage anyway?

Doesn't that make the belly rolling easier or something?

My belly dancing teacher was very fat! But it wasn't her day job! If you search YouTube for proper belly dancers you will see some women with amazing abs!!

    Not me though unfortunately :(

The reason for that is that belly dancing is, and is promoted as, a way for ANYONE to practice some kind of movement and increase self-esteem through accomplishment, self-acceptance and peer encouragement. There is no rule that says a belly dancer has to be slim to be a dancer. And, the dance actually looks better when the dancer has a little softness to his/her belly. It accentuates the movements better. I have been overweight for years and if I waited to try this activity until I was thin, I'd probably never do it. So, I started going to classes and have been doing it ever since, 7 years now. It's therapy as well as a discipline for me. The instructor I started with was not overweight and the instructor I've been with for years now wasn't overweight when I started with her. She's gained since then, but that doesn't take away from her skill.

Okay, i do agree with the earlier posts about "every"... but I wasn't going to mention that.... ONce upon a couple of decades ago, a friend of mine did belly dancing, I asked her about the her robust waistline and she said that belly dancers do tend to have more of a middle to shake.

This is me, the overweight ballet instructor. While in class I am too busy correcting my students and making them look awesome to actually dance myself. I teach mainly teenagers so I work on vocabulary a lot instead of demonstrating everything for them. My dance kiddos on the other hand... they look AMAZING!

I was only being facetious of course, but that's another point most instructors dont really get a lot of time doing the actual exercise most of it is spent correcting form in the students.

My cousin is an instructor...has traveled and done videos...last year went to Milan and did a belly dance video while pregnant...I suppose some might THINK she was obese if they didn't know as she was early on (though I know they mentioned it)

Yeah..NO, not obese. Though the culture is to have some sort of belly to MOVE and undulate with...soft and sensual, not hard as a board (though there are some SERIOUS muscles underneath!)

As a former competitive dancer, I am so much bigger than I was back in the day. But I could no doubt teach dance and can still do most of the moves, even though I am overweight. I would wager to guess the instructors you have seen do not entertain for a living anymore or do so less than they used to. I have seen belly dancers of all shapes though, as it is style of dance that really celebrates womanhood and all types of women's bodies.

I could go on and on...the ones I have seen look even better in real life too. A lot of photos catch them on the "out" of the belly roll, which is not especially flattering in a photo but is gorgeous in real life.
