Pics or it didn't happen. I have never seen an overweight belly dancer, at least not that I can recall.

My cousin is an instructor...has traveled and done videos...last year went to Milan and did a belly dance video while pregnant...I suppose some might THINK she was obese if they didn't know as she was early on (though I know they mentioned it)

Yeah..NO, not obese. Though the culture is to have some sort of belly to MOVE and undulate with...soft and sensual, not hard as a board (though there are some SERIOUS muscles underneath!)

Both of my instructors are lean and beautiful.

ETA how many have you seen? I'm thinking of the Tribalfest instructors last year and overweight does not come to mind.

My ex SIL is an instructor and she is not fat. However, most of her students are on the larger side.

As a former competitive dancer, I am so much bigger than I was back in the day. But I could no doubt teach dance and can still do most of the moves, even though I am overweight. I would wager to guess the instructors you have seen do not entertain for a living anymore or do so less than they used to. I have seen belly dancers of all shapes though, as it is style of dance that really celebrates womanhood and all types of women's bodies.

Well, belly dancers are supposed to be overweight, don't they?
All Arabian dancers that I've seen in Egypt and Tunisia had bellies.

I could go on and on...the ones I have seen look even better in real life too. A lot of photos catch them on the "out" of the belly roll, which is not especially flattering in a photo but is gorgeous in real life.

Aren't they kind of required to have a high body fat percentage anyway?

Doesn't that make the belly rolling easier or something?

    No.

I'm ok with a belly dancer that is overweight. They can still make the dance look sexy.

I also saw women of all shapes, sizes, colors, ages, etc. doing *amazing* things and absolutely owning the stage. It's harder than it looks.

    Just an observation.

Seriously, this seems to defy odds. If they were a sample of average population, at least 1/3 of them would be normal weight.
And, it is an active job, and they work out all the time, yet, wow!

Or have your experience been different?

It's belly dancing...............not six pack dancing

I have no issue with most belly dancers :-)

I've seen some belly dancers that are a little chubby, beautiful, lovely dancers. I've seen all different sized belly dancers. I know many that have hourglass figures with tiny waists. I know a man that is a belly dancer, he is lean.

Must be completely different from the ones I've known. The one who taught where I last lived had a 6-pack and a squat booty. She could do some amazing things with those abs, though.
