Hey everyone, what do you all think about the news broadcast and so on now claiming that it is not necessary to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Anyone see Dr. Oz on Oprah, she was shocked when he said it was not beneficial for weight loss or for our skin.:noway: I swear the benefits for weight loss from drinking all that water is the exercise of all the trips to the little girls room.:embarassed: I swear I need to go sooooooo often. What do you think??

I don't know if it makes any sense but I actually find I'm addicted to water. I have water with me everywhere I go. It is always beside me watching TV, I bring some in the car with me when I going out or I buy a bottled water when shopping. I just get so thirsty for my water, maybe just habit now. I try and make sure I drink enough before 8 pm so I don't have to drag my butt out of bed in the middle of the night to go. :embarassed:

Just a PS, on Oprah today they were encouraging people to use refillable water bottles because of all of us drinking water on a regular basis the landfills are taking a beating with all the water bottles just thrown out instead of being recycled. Can you tell I enjoy Oprah.

I don't drink pop either, only my diet coke when it is spiked with a little bacardi rum in it.:embarassed:

I honestly believe water helps me lose weight. I don't care what those Doctors and Scientists say. I can lose double the weight with water than when I don't drink it.

I missed that episode when the doctor was on Oprah but I can sure say that in my case, gulping water does wonders for my skin. (not too sure about weight loss) If I don't drink enough water in a day, my face will break out but I've noticed as long as I keep the water intake going, my face stays clear so I guess it's just everyone's personal opinion as to whether or not gulping water is really the key but for me, it sure helps out a lot!:drinker:

Ya, I heard about that (the dangers of plastic bottles) they say to buy the stainless steel water bottles. Probably last longer too.

Water does help fill you up as would any liquid. it just happens to be calorie free and fat free. Cant beat that! I think that is the benefit that water lends to dieting the most. It keeps me from munching on things constantly all day long. If I was choosing a sugary pop or juice then I would be consuming calories. I would much rather save my calories for the food! An occasional Starbucks treat is great too!

I don't watch Oprah, but what I've read that you don't HAVE to drink 8 glasses. Drink what feels right for you. Don't over hydrate yourself for the sake of drinking 8 glasses of water, but don't dehydrate yourself either.

I've found for me that drinking water has made me lose weight, but I drank about 4 diet cokes a day. Now I'm drinking one, and about five glasses of water.

you can be mad at me if you want.. but do you think it might be another childish ploy to get us to stop drinking bottled water to save the land fills from Plastic... well it should be
    nawwww

Pepsi and Coke companies wouldn't allow it.. just craziness!

anyway... water helps my skin a huge deal... i don't know about weight but it flushes away all my toxins:tongue:

Everybody I talk to say drink your water. My husband is a big water pusher. At the gym, the spin class lady preaches water drinking.
I think that we should stick to the 8 glasses. I don't swell when I drink water, my skin is not as dry, I am not always wanting to eat, I am not parched and I think just because it is on Oprah, it doesn't mean we should do it.
There is something about that show.....if that woman says jump....a lot of people say HOW HIGH?

I agree... she does not give the best advice sometimes but everyone follows her like sheep... too many people just take what someone else says for fact without doing any research themselves... a friend of my bf has a word for people like this... sheeple...

Don't be sheeple... do the research...

I was gonna say if I was a doctor who wanted to appear on Oprah, what could I say that would be "shocking" :noway: enough to get me booked.

I've lost a lot of weight since increasing my water intake. My tp budget has tripled, but ya gotta take the good with the bad.

I think sometimes doctors or the so called experts just get on a kick, get a kickback in the pocketbook, to have journals printed up for the latest nad greatest fads... Just to see how people can't think for them selves and fall into the hype.

    Harsh?? Maybe. I've been there.....

And as for Opra? Well, that's a different story and I just won't open that can of worms....

I love water. I love how I feel when I drink it and I actually crave it, even though I drink about 8 16oz bottles a day. Plain or flavored!!!

So of course, do what is best for your body and do what feels right to you.....

I don't watch Oprah, but I have read multiple articles that state you do not need to drink 8 glasses of water a day. This is because you get water from food, juice, coffee, pop, etc. Although drinks with caffeine do have a slight dehydrating effect, that doesn't come near canceling out the amount of water in them. However, I could be slightly biased because I hate, hate, hate water!

As long as your "peeing" clear, your getting the right amount. I think its rather stupid to tell people that are exercising and sweating to drink less. That is almost asinine. I have tried doing rather high endurance things hydrated and dehydrated, and my body would last FAR FAR longer when it had the liquid in it to get rid of all the bad things. I have also never had cramps when the urine test was clear!

There are all of these studies saying that water isn't beneficial in losing weight, which may or may not be true. But what it does is it keeps a person from drinking sugary drinks instead of water when thirsty. Sugar is death to a person trying to drop pounds, so if water is there to keep me from drinking a coke or sweet tea- I consider it vital to my health and diet.

Water itself won't help you lose weight - BUT it will flush your system of harmful waste byproducts that enter your bloodstream as a result of living. Things like uric acid, proteins, etc. Also, drinking COLD water does cause you to lose weight out of the sheer fact that your body has to expend energy to heat it up to body temperature.

Think of it this way - if you drink ice cold water, you don't pee ice cold water. The energy to heat it up had to come from somewhere.

I used to force it down and keep a check list to make sure that I drank it all...now, I just drink when I am thirsty. Some days I may drink a ton and others much less. I can't tell a difference in the weight loss, my skin, or how I feel. I decided it was time to stop obsessing over it and just give my body what it tells me I need. I think that lots of people have lots of opinions and when it comes down to it, not one of them has "MY" body so until they live a day in "MY" body then their opinions are just that.

I eat when I am hungry. If I am lightheaded I know I have not had enough food regardless what the calorie count says.

I drink when I am thirsty.

When every inch of my body is screaming STOP while I am running, I push a few more feet and then I stop and walk.

Funny thing about our bodies...they are EXCELLENT at communicating what they need---the problem is that we are not always good listeners. It took me 35 years to realize this--if only I had listened sooner!!!! Listening to my body has made eating, drinking and exercising a pleasure instead of a burden and I am 46 pounds lighter than I was last year.

Put on your listening ears and see what your body has to say. Of course you can take into acct the opinions of Oz, Phil, Oprah, Bob, Jillian and even your trainer at the gym, but none of them know your body like you do!!!!!!!

Dr. Oz did talk about water on Oprah. He explained an experiment that they did with two healthy women. One drank 8 glasses of water a day while the other just continued to eat healthily. At the end of their experiment, there was no difference healthwise between the two. The key was that the girl who didn't drink as much water ate a lot of fruit and vegetables. So if you eat a lot of fruit and veggies, you really don't need to force yourself to drink a lot of water because those foods already have a lot of water in them. It doesn't hurt you to drink the water, it just isn't necessary unless you don't eat many fruits or vegetables.

sorry again i have to say im glad im in nz lol great water well better than some. and we reuse our bottles alot pretty good at recycling (ok im not but i do know i should be and i do when i think about it , mental note sort out recycling containers to do it).

i do know if you drink to much you can drown but you have to drink alot to do that. im writing this as i drink my 2nd ltr for the day im a bit behind actualy.

unless they give me a better reason to not dehydrate myself then they can go jump for all i care and i agree i think ophra (and i do like her) has a little to much influence over people research is a must on everything cause depending on the information and how it was collated it has an element of era

Aside from the fact that it has 0 calories and 0 fat and fills you up...

We use water to wash off our outsides, why not use it to wash out our insides too.

Although as far as the amount goes -
1st - Is the "recommended" eight CUPS or eight ???oz GLASSES? - Could make a big difference.
2nd -I have a friend who is about 4'9" and an aunt that's 6'4". I doubt they need the same amount.

Yep, reckon I'll keep chugging my water and pass the habit on to my kids. I can hear my seven year old son now, "I want some woodah (he pronounces it like his dad and grandma!) Its healthy for my body!"

Now I learned more about water then I thought I knew. With humans being 70% water, called 'Water Bags' by sone sc-fic movie alien, it would make sense to drink water especially when you are loosing too much at gym. I am myself culprit of drinking less water but the two rules of thumb are:

    Drink when thirsty
    Try to have clear pee

I just want to point out that Science, by defintion is mallable.

Its very rare that you can't 'prove' something to be true by focusing on the right data.

i would be vary wary of Doctors or Scientists who need to make money appearing on chat shows

for example, gravity is proven by things NOT floating in the air, not the fact that they are stuck to the floor. this is why we have to pick things up, to drop them, to prove gravity

sorry i am neither a scientist, nor a philospher and that may have made no sense whatsoever!
