Any other hourglass shaped woman?

I prefer something tight like a pencil skirt or the lbd in my pics0

Dresses with side panels look good on any shape.0

When I have a shape other than round (right now) I'm an hourglass too. A-line dresses always hide hips and booty or umpire waist dresses too but I personally think embrace your curves girl! Don't allow yourself to feel self-conscious or nervous about wearing something a little more form fitting. Most importantly don't listen to society that says we all need to be shaped like pencils and wear size 2. Woman were made to have curves and shape.♥ I hope you find the dress you're most comfortable in. Best of luck darling!0

The right accessories can be extremely flattering ~ earrings, a scarf, a pin. doesn't have to be expensive.
If you're self conscious about your body, why not draw people's attention to your pretty smile, face, lovely hair.
And don't forget ~ color is your friend !!0 -
I'm hourglass... work on that waist and embrace the shape hunny. The sexiest shape you can have with all the bumps and curves in all the right spots. Work it and love it!0

Am I the only hourglass who avoids a line for what it does to my hips, fitted pencils or full for me.
I don't think you are an apple I think it is the bra doing a disservice to you.
Look up measuring for a bra. Measure yourself underneath for your band size then ignore any other advise, measure your bust round the widest point with a bra on. If what you have does not hold them very well be prepared to go up a cup size. Then go try underwear on somewhere. Do not buy without trying on until you have an idea of what brands fit you well. I am an E cup in most brands but there are some where even a C is too big! Also, move around when you try on, bend over and the like jump up and down. If you have double boobs go up a cup. There are some brands I just can't buy as they do not fit me and are not comfortable.
Do not be persuaded or tempted to increase the band size to get in a smaller cup. The bra should support from the back not the shoulders. It should lie flat against your back and not lift when you wear it. Also whatever band you get needs to be a good fit on the longest hook fastening. That way as you wash and wear and it gets bigger you can make it smaller.0 -
Embrace your curves! Learn to love them ! I didn't realize what I had until an 87 year old woman - a patient where I work complemented me and said whoa!!!! Look at the curves on you! Looking good - we can't change our structure - go online to look up what type of clothes for hourglass woman - and just show them off and be proud! Good luck0

If you know where to buy, even at the Swap Meet, you can get body-shapers. Oriental girls go wild in there, as do the Latinas and they have being feminine down to a Science. They know how to up a cheap dress.

Anyways.... Hips are great but in some things they dont look flattering, i like watching the show what not to wear, good advice!
I like Rhonda Shears shape wear from HSN0 -
I agree with other posters - a baggy or flowy dress will always make you look bigger than you really are, esp. in the hip area. Form-fitting dresses are the way to go! I recently wore some flowy sundresses on a cruise I went on last month, and I felt "hippy" the whole time in them.
But yes - you should be proud of your hourglass shape! :drinker:0 -
A-line and empire waists are my best friends, and I found that if a dress has vertical lines in just the right spots it makes me look super slim0
-
I agree with the poster that said to try and embrace your body shape.
I love my shape so I like to accentuate my curves by wearing form-fitting (not tight!) dresses and pencil skirts. Anything flowy or even A-line dresses does not look right on me.
Last fall/winter while in weight loss mode I lived in sweater dresses, leggings and knee high boots/heels. I really like that look and doing the same this season...just in smaller sizes.0 -

It was intended as a fact on the ground (to economical scale ) ~ in turn, a compliment to Latinas and Oriental girls/women who know how to complement their lifestyles and earning power with bargain buys(knowing where to get deals), choosing feminine outfits supporting their own community manufacturers ~ and in this case@OP Latinas are more often than not ~ curvy and NOT fat ~ a normative genetic predisposition . Natural hourglass girls/women ~ fat distribution is focused on the bust and hips with defined waistlines. The suggestion was made to assist the OP whose budget is US$35.
Cute Femme Sportswear are available at these indoor Swap Meets too ... Cuter tees, shorts, sweat skirts than what is available at the Official Lakers or Dodgers Store ... The cutest running tops, shorts, yoga pants, and hoodies EVER ~ feminine and sexy yet practical. Even knock off versions of "Miss Me" Jeans and Frankie B Jeans can be found there ~ some are simply works of art accentuating the female form. Really ... The insult is NOT informing a woman on a budget about it ~ where deals can be found.

Have you ever watched the show What Not to Wear? I learned how to dress myself by watching that show. Also, you can try to find celebrities who have a similar body shape and try to recreate some of the outfits that they wear. I personally LOVE modcloth like someone else mentioned and now a days retro clothing is back in style and it looks great on curvy/hourglass shapes. I would say steer towards more structured dresses and away from things that hang and drape. Even if this isn't your style, this is something that I think would look good on you. I hope the link works!

ooh me! 33-22-34:) I used to hate my hips too, I felt that for having a small waist they made me look a lot heavier and shorter than I am. I agree totally with the posters who have encouraged you to embrace your body type. I've come to absolutely love bodycon dresses and empire waists for the sole reason that they highlight those curves. Trying to hide under baggy, formless dresses will not only be unflattering but a clear sign that you aren't confident in your figure. Fake it til ya make it:)0
-
You wanted to cry because you have hips?? That's what makes you a woman! You should watch the science of sex appeal. Men love those curvy hips!0
-
Pencil skirts that fit look absolutely bonkers, but they need to be of a stiff fabric - no clingy, yicky knits that give you pantyline and make you look fat. Fit and flares are also great. Hourglasses are the "perfect" body shape; be happy and celebrate that! Of course, clothes are now made on the "sexy tube" model instead of the "us" model, so think fifties. You don't need poodle skirts, but that was the last time clothes were really made for our shape.0
-
WHAT???? I think you have a beautiful figure!! and you look awesome !! Are you talking about the bumps at the hips?..light control top pantyhose for that..but your shape is beautiful..and the dress shows off your waist, and chest.0
-
I would say A-lined for sure, but I think you look wonderful and the dress looks nice as well. I SOOO understand how you feel I hate trying on new stuff Im VERY self critical, but from what I can see your lovely woman:)0
-
I've really struggled with this because I carry my weight primarily in my hips. Any dress, skirt, or top that flares out above and over your hips will be flattering.0
-
Wow, this is a great thread! Thanks for all the posts about where to find dresses ladies, it is really helpful. I've always had a large chest and a curvy backside and heard the term "statuesque" a lot growing up which I translated to "tall and overweight".0
-
good dress shapes for hourglasses are wrap and bias cut dresses. you can also do empire waists IF your waist isn't short. a-lines might work as well.
i second pencil skirts. also avoid tops with high neck
also there's nothing wrong with the dress you're wearing but honey you are wearing the wrong bra size which makes it look ill fitting plus you have it pinned at an unnatural point on the top that makes the chest area look even stranger0 -
Present!
ALWAYS emphasize the smallest part of your waist, either with clothing cuts or belting. Flowy bohemian tops tend to make hourglasses look blocky and heavy
Belted A-line, Fit & Flare dresses are my best friends. Pencil skirts work for hourglasses but I'm not a fan of thigh-clinging skirts on myself, personally.
For big busts stay away from high and tight necklines, they can make your top half look matronly and bloated. V-neck, boat neck, sweetheart necklines work best!
As hard as it can be to find clothes sometimes (I'm shopping for a winter parka and it is kind of a nightmare to find one that fits my hips, but isn't too big in the midsection/shoulders) I will never not enjoy my body shape.0 -
Am I the only hourglass who avoids a line for what it does to my hips, fitted pencils or full for me.
I find that sometimes with how A-line dresses and skirts are cut, the flare out starts too low and it can make the hips look kind of chunky. The skirt/dress should start flaring at or just below the narrowest part of the waist, in my opinion.0 -
I wear fitted clothing that shows my shape. Pencil skirts look best on me, but an a-line or flared skirt is another good option. The last thing I want to do is hide my waist. I'm more of a pear than an hourglass, and the widest part of my hips sits pretty low.0

Possible... I don't know! Just always assumed I was hourglass because I have large shoulders and pretty sizable breasts...
There's no store I can think of here that could fit me for a bra though, that's the problem I think... The department stores have non existent personnel and the only lingerie store is VS. I guess I could try a lot to see if I can find one that fits well...
Nope, that just means you aren't a pear, but you could be an apple too - your lower hips look much narrower than your shoulders.
NO do not go to VS, that will be a waste of your time. You're in NJ...I'm *sure* there are higher end department stores that can help, or if you're close to NYC there are a number of specialty lingerie boutiques there.
I think UrbanLotus knows what she is talking about on this.
It's worth the research and a trip to NYC.0 -
Looking at your picture, I'm starting to agree that you just need the right bra, with Spanx being optional. You look very pretty. Wacoal is a brand that is found in department stores that caters to larger busted women.0

It is all about balancing out your shape. Think of women like Marilyn Monroe...she was an hourglass. More vintage shapes like circle skirts and A-lines are going to flatter your shape more...things that flow away from your hips and balance you out. I would also agree on going for a bra fitting. When I worked in retail I was actually a certified bra fit specialist in our lingerie department and SO MANY WOMEN are wearing the wrong size, and the wrong type of bra for their body shape. If you have a Nordstrom or a specialty lingerie store near by call and make an appointment. You don't necessarily have to buy the actual bra from there...but they will be the best at letting you know what size and shape you actually need.
If you really aren't sure what your body shape is try entering your measurements on this website. It is set up for UK and will ask where you live...in the UK. I just put London.

(i) I hate my hips so much, but really there isn't much for me to lose there anymore (maybe one inch each side?)... it's just my genetics.
(ii) I guess it sounds a bit silly when you spend $35 on a dress. But something to keep in mind when I'm at my goal weight though.
(iv) What kind of spanx do you all use? I'm a bit confused with all the types out there!

I don't know if this makes me hourglass but I don't have a problem spit really as my measurements are 36-22.5-33.
My issues usually have to do with my skin or keeping my breasts perky. But I have no fat issues with shape and weight gain. My hips don't have weight gain on them ever and they"re very bony but prominent in comparison to my waistline. When I gain weight mainly goes to my bust then it'll go to my butt and thighs my waist has seemingly gotten thinner slimmer than before and well defined no weight gain added there. I don't gain in my arms I have slim shoulder that are really wide 38". My back doesn't get fat either. In the past I got a bigger waistline but most of my weight was still in my boobs butt and thighs and not my hips or waistline when I gain weight I look like a true inverted triangle but at 100 bmi 18.5 bmi I have bottom half curves but not as drastic as up top I'm like a top hourglass or something then. I have no problem areas so I find that to be my commonground.0 -
I got a dress today and looking at the picture (my profile) I just want to cry. I hate my hips so much, but really there isn't much for me to lose there anymore (maybe one inch each side?)... it's just my genetics.
For other hourglass shapes out there, what kind of dress do you wear that doesn't look too awful?
I love my hourglass figure. Thanks mom. Curves are sexy. The more you lose is the more you will appreciate those hips. By the way you look pretty good to me. Keep at it. Work on toning up. Men like curves not bones.0
