What keeps you going?

Today, I was thinking.. I have to lose 25 lbs and it just felt overwhelming. How am I going to lose 25 lbs and be patient? Especially because that's just going to put me on the higher end of a healthy BMI for my height.

then I thought... I already lost 5 lbs, that's 16% of my goal.. I AM 16% to goal!!! That ain't bad in a matter of three weeks.. and another 3, I will be 30% to goal.

I think what helps me is instead of looking at the amount I have to lose/lost as a number is looking at it as a percentage to goal. What helps you stay motivated?

I find that using multiple progress metrics helps so that you have additional sources of positive feedback.
I find that using a method of training that you enjoy is very important so that you LIKE the exercise portion of your program. Having metrics here helps as well. For example, tracking your progress on your lifts can be very empowering.

I don't worry so much about the number on the scale, I track my progress in a few different ways.

    1. How is my health improving
    2. Can I bike longer and faster then last week, last month, etc.
    3. How is my lifting progressing

If all 3 of those are improving then I'm progressing, and if I continue to do those while keeping my food intake under control then the weight will drop as an added benefit.

for me it's mostly improved techniques in MMA (flexibility, able to train more), and since i joined MFP in September I am able to wear smaller sizes of clothes ^_^
  • is to know I can do it- and to look at a picture and not believe that use to be me-before I lost over 90 pounds-and when I go the gym being able to do cardio-weights and not wanting to go back where I was 5 years ago :)
  • I don't want to be fat and I'm not going to be fat anymore and that's why I don't want to give up. I tryed before and gained back it's not gonna happen this time I can't let it happen I would rather be dead than have trouble wiping my *kitten* or getting up stairs without my knees dying a little.

The will to make sure that tomorrow > today.
The will to prove the doubters and haters wrong.
The will to prove the worst and most vocal doubter/hater of them all i.e. myself wrong.
Knowing that I can improve constantly.
Knowing that I am constantly improving.

For me, my motivation is seeing my numbers go up in lifting, my run time improve and the substantial changes in the mirror and the way my clothes fit. My original goal was to a set scale number and even though that number still stands, I think I will be happy with anything as long as I'm happy with the mirror now.

Interim goals are a must. For example, I'm 180 lbs. but my goal is a very lean 175. The only way for me to get there is to gain weight and add muscle first. It's hard to add fat mass and gain weight when my eventual goal is the exact opposite. So, right now my goals are strength and size gains because it's a means to an end.

Motivation is the driving force for will and determination. You cannot be determined without a motive.
  • The thing that keeps me going is my weight itself.

I used to enjoy eating whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. I was underweight at 12 stone and 6 ft 4.
The doctor told me to pile on my weight as I was way underweight for my height.

So i went ahead and ate more...

Who guessed it? I actually became overweight. I am now 18 stone and 6 ft 5

    I have a BMI of 31.5

I'm trying to get down to about 13 stone.

As the doctor has now told me to lose weight.
And to be honest half my jeans don't fit me anymore lol

    (I'm a guy)

Refusal to let myself fall back into old bad habits and regain the weight. I have worked too hard and come too far to give up now!

All I have to do is look at old pictures or think about how unfit and unhealthy I was and that is motivation enough to keep at it.

Right now it's my wardrobe. Fitting into cloths that I didn't fit into 2 months ago and putting them away or giving them away or throwing them out depending on how they look.

Having the courage to buy things, well right now most is second hand but it's a step up from not going into stores at all and feeling ashamed when I had to get something new.

Sometimes trying to tackle the entire beast at once can be overwhelming. What I am doing is to set interim goals for myself. For example, I have about 4 lbs to lose until I hit my interim goal. Once there, I set another goal that eventually gets me to where I want to be.

I've lost over 80 lbs this way.

You go. You have a wonderful attitude!

What keeps me going is how wonderful I feel and look. I see myself in the mirror and I can't believe that person is me. I set out to lose 33 pounds because I'd gained back between 25-30 of previously lost 70 pounds. Today I am at the lowest weight I've been as an adult and I am much more toned and fit. Two more pounds to go!

I've set myself goals and told a small group of friends about what I'm trying to achieve.

Things are progressing slowly at the moment (HUGE month of events this month), I'm still trying to hit my first 5kgs lost mark, after 65 days on MFP.

Any other time, I'm fairly certain I would've given up by now due to the slow, small results. However because I've told people, I don't want to be the person who failed, or the person who gave up after a big night. I just get right back into it.
  • Motivated?

I need motivation to do my school work,

but motivation to workout?! motivation to eat healthier?!

    NEITHER

because I love doing both. I don't need motivation to do what I love to do, and so shouldn't you!

Can't speak for anyone else but I don't need motivation anymore - to eat or train - as it's become my way of life. I have a very good eating/gym routine.

The way your viewing it seems like it works for you and that's great! I just know if I keep doing what I'm doing ill be at GW eventually (I'm not obsessing over dates anymore) then I can up my calories a little for maintenance.

I intend to eat sensibly (For the most part :) ) and train for as long as my body is able.

    Good luck!

Myself. I have marital issues that were caused by drinking (that I accounted for in MFP's macros and then ate less to fit it in). Once the doctor told me my liver was heading for shot and my wife took a month hiatus from me, I focused on heavy lifting and some cardio. Now over 20 pounds under from when I started, I decided that the best thing overall was that I did it for myself. It's longer termed than had I said I did it to get my wife or for a new girlfriend. Myself hopefully includes my wife and, most importantly, my child. I don't want to be rolled up to her wedding in a hospital bed because I was selfish. So, yeah, myself...one of the most important people in my life which leads to importance in other lives.

With that all said, I do what I do for life. More life even. Drinking is fun and awesome, but I can now moderate myself and use lifting/cardio as stress killers where I was using alcohol. Will I win my wife back completely? Don't know, but I know I'm a better overall, more fit, and determined person than I was prior to taking my health seriously. I'm only 30 and admitting to all of this. It was/is tough everyday, but you have to do it for yourself. I learned this in counseling for alcohol. You are your most important person. After that, everyone benefits. Sigh, wow, feels good to get that off my back. Thanks for opening this topic.

Just keep doing that. Rinse and repeat. If things become so redundant, find something new to keep that heart rate going. I've found looking at life more preciously has helped me push harder. Leaving your bed is the hardest part of the day. You got up and out. Some people don't.

This and I don't ever want to go back to my self-conscious, negative self ever. Its only up from here.
