All of the people on their high horse here. I am pretty sure at some point you were that new person at the gym. are you reading the same thread I'm reading?

    Apparently not.

    Resolutioners. They are officially here.

Yeah, my gym was more-than-usually crowded yesterday, after a month of being a ghost town. I needed to rearrange my lifting schedule this week to accomodate some other regular life things, so I needed to lift on a Monday, which is always a bad deal anyway at my gym.

I had planned to squat, even though I should know better than to try to do that on a Monday -- there are several regulars who monopolize the racks on Mondays. But I thought maybe I'd try to tough it out and bench while I waited... No benches. WTF?! there's *always* a free bench. But not last night!

I agree about post-holiday guilt, and hot-date-and-sexy-dress anticipation as being drivers generally. And in my gym, Mondays are by far the busiest day every week. But also, we are supposed to get very cold here for the next 5 days. I think that helped fuel the mania a little bit more, too. When the weather's bad, people stay home -- so everyone wanted to get a workout in before the storm hit.

This girl tonight was using a squat rack. To do squats. Except she was using 5 pounds dumbbells not the bar. While people were waiting around to use the rack. I could really feel the testosterone levels rising in there.

Why? Why? Why take up the squat rack for dumbbells, did she rest her dumbbells on the little pegs for the bar?

My gym is getting packed too. The owner put up a sign for free enrollment and first month off as a black friday promotion, and oh my God is it nuts now. I don't mind, it's a 24 hour gym so I can always go late at night if need be.

As far as someone saying something to a newbie if they're doing something dumb ... as a newbie that did lots of dumb stuff in the weight room due to lack of knowledge, yeah, I'd have been embarrassed, but I'd like to think I'd be thankful for someone giving me a heads up if I was doing something stupid or causing others to be inconvenienced as a result of my stupidity

i can get a little upset at the resolutionists, because i'm not in the gym all year round either. as a triathlete, i tend to go to the gym more in the off season, which starts in October and until February when i need to start putting in more milage on the road.

that being said, it gets packed, but it usually doesn't effect me as much, as i hit the gym at 530am when it opens up, and usually only the most dedicated are there at that time.

i've also noticed more runners out there, and you know, good for them. but if you're going to run out on the street, please wear some bright colors or something. almost hit two runners that were running side by side (so sticking out MORE into the street) because they were all in black and i didn't see them until i was almost on top of them. and then somehow, i'm the *kitten*-hole...

OMG - My gym is packed out now too. Worst part- they aren't even doing the workout. They just want to sit on the freakin machines/ weight benches and text or whatever. I mean between sets whatever, but you wanna take up things for 30 mins and I've only seen you do one set. c'mon really?!? get with it or get off it! sry - rant over.

Black Friday or Cyber Monday Deals could be some cause.
It will probably drop in a week or two as the holiday gets closer.
Then get crazy again after January 1st.
I just try to be patient and smile knowing it will go back to normal soon.

Noticed that yesterday too, it's mainly the stationary bikes/treadmills/ellipticals/rowing machines that get busy, nobody new seems to go near the weights. In my experience it's the regulars who sit on the benches texting and "resting" for ridiculous amounts of time between sets rather than new people

Lmao at this post, last night at my gym I was finishing my sets on the weight bench and when I turned around I had 3 people I had never seen waiting on me, the worst was they were sitting on machines others were waiting to use.

I wasn't a resolutioner, but I started this a year ago tomorrow. Even if 5% stick with bettering themselves, it's a win. My gym is always empty year-round anyway (5am roads).

We'll all get along fine if the new people re-rack their weights and wipe up their sweat

I guess it's simply tradition for a lot of people. To my memory I've never actually made new years resolutions, my resolutions come when they come. Early this November it was receiving a crumby blood test result that motivated me.

I suspect (pure personal opinion) that resolutions are probably more likely to stick if you have a specific concrete and personal reason to provoke you into action, rather than more arbitrary factors like it simply happening to be the new year.

The re-racking weighs part doesn't bother me as much. But i hate it when the re-rack them wrong. As in, they tjust put them all on one of those weight holders pin thingies and i need to take 2-3 45pounds plates off the rack to reach the 25 pounds ones then put the 45's back up.
There are signs saying where each plate goes!:grumble:

I expect the trigger for many today was "Thanksgiving Guilt".

This. I see it every year. The week of and the week after Thanksgiving trigger new faces to be at the gym, and old faces that you haven't seen since February as well. They want to preburn and then postburn their holiday meals. They will peter out, and then you will see them all again en masse in january.
