Why do you believe 1200 calories is a magic number to reach your goals?

Because the tooth fairy told me that when she divulged all her other magic secrets...

anyhoo- to respond to the people that actually attempted an answer to the question:

I jog about 5x per week (usually3-4 miles)
I do circuit weights every other day…although I didn't do so much last week (whomp-whomp)
    I am 26, 5'6…right now I'm at 121.4 lbs.

why do you need to lose more weight, your at a normal weight for your height and age, I suggest just to tone up from here on out

Protein, fat and fiber. If you can get most of your calories from these three sources, you'll feel less hungry than if it's mostly carbs. :)

You could probably also up your calorie limit a bit, since you're young. Try 1300 for awhile, and if you still lose weight over the course of a couple of weeks, try 1400, etc. It's a calibration process, learning what your body does with different calorie limits.

I really want the last few pounds to budge. I run and do weights…but this 1200 calories per day is making me into a cranky- insomniac *****. Any suggestions on how to make 1200 a bit less PTSD inducing? (I know to drink water BTW…thanks LOL)

Eat more.. seriously.. you don't have to starve yourself to lose weight. The average women I know is losing at 1700-2100. Whats your weight weight age and workout routine?
What I wouldn't give to be able to eat 1700-2100/day and LOSE. I'm 5'1" and 99 pounds, so that's just not gonna happen. My sedentary TDEE is 1365 - 1450 (depending on which calculator I use), so I would have to burn calories like a rock star to get to the point where I could lose at 1700 - 2100. Shoot, I can't even maintain at that level. And yes, I burn... I run and I rock climb several times a week. Not grousing, just saying that I guess I'm not your "average" woman. Ooooooh... does that make me a special snowflake???????? Too. Awesome. Rainbow unicorn poop mode engaged.

No you are not the average person.. especially since you are close to being under weight. You do have the ability to increase your TDEE and increase your metabolic rate. You could, with hard work, do a couple bulk/cut cycles to gain new lean body mass and increase your BMR. I can tell you, i know a lot of 5' girls eating 1700 calories and losing. The fact that your composition is low, is directly related to the amount of calories you burn. Heck, it's the reason my friend maintains at 4500 calories.

Below is a great thread, especially for women to see what others on this site are doing. It's over 500+ post of women who eat a lot of various ages and sizes.

  • Well, for one thing if you are exercising 1200 cals/day is not enough. It will make you hungry, cranky, and put your body into starvation mode.
  • Your hunger is your body's reaction to fat tissue loss.
Humans are built to save up fat in times of scarcity. When your body starts losing fat, it sends you a relentless message to search for food, and eat plenty.
many times, in nature, periods of short scarcity were followed by very long periods of scarcity.
This explains why we eat EVEN MORE than we would have if/when we break our fat loss diet.
In short, every time you are hungry, know your body is burning fat.
Keep it safe though, nobody likes a piece of cardboard as a chick.

I'll definitely check that out. I've considered a bulk/cut cycle. I'm around 20-21% BF now, so it would be reasonable for me to bulk at this point and attempt some eventual net lean mass gain (after the cut, of course). When I average it out, I'm maintaining at about 1500. I can't even imagine being able to maintain or lose at higher than that, but I would love to do just that. Thanks for the link!

I eat 1500 calories a day and I'm losing really wonderfully! I'm hardly ever hungry and I feel better vs eating 1200 calories which I was doing at one point. I was always hungry then.

Eating 1200 calories has become a game for me. It's fun to see how much food I can get out of 1200 calories. Sometimes I'm still hungry though... so I eat something. You can lose weight eating more. If you're hungry, eat up!

    From your profile...
Your highest was 137. Your ticker was set to lose 40 lbs. You stated to want a healthy mind set as your goal.

Even if at your highest is when you started your ticker, you set your goal to be at less than 100 lbs. Unless you're like, 4'8", this is not a healthy mindset. You are 5'6". You want a healthy mindset? Change your numeric goals to reflect real & healthy goals.

Is your goal to be in unhealthy double-digits, or is your goal to ACTUALLY BE HEALTHY?

I have a huge philiosophy that unless something is seriously medically wrong with you, you should eat when you are hungry & don't eat when you're not. You shouldn't be hungry. I tell all my clients this.

    Eat. Be healthy. And happy.

This. I've stopped with toast, bananas and cereal with milk for breakfasts. I eat bacon and eggs and I'm happy as a clam until 1 or 2pm.

The amount of fat-free anything needed to get you that level of satiation is obscene.

    [edit]

Just looked at your photos. I gotta agree with everyone else. Perhaps re-evaluate your goals?

Or maybe meth or heroin.. I hear that does wonders for getting one skinny.

Mine must be busted, then. I haven't been hungry while losing fat except when meal time rolls around.

Plan meals ahead. Makes them important (sit at the table and enjoy every bite instead of at the computer/tv where you could even forget you ate your meal). Don't forget MFP has low-calorie food blogs that can help with meal planning.. and they have calories already figured up for you! http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/category/food/meal-planning/

We have about the same body size - I'm 5'7" and at goal and maintainin aroudn 120 lbs. You dont' sound like you need to loose much more, but I did 1200 calories - NET. I logged all my exercise and ate back 100% of those calories. So I was actually consuming more like 1500-1600 calories a day and loosing. And I made sure to eat filling things with good nutrients - my favorite snack is peanut butter protein balls (peanut butter, honey, protein powder, dark choc chips, flax seed). And for those last few months I would go 2-3 weeks without the scale dropping then it would drop a few pounds. I saw the trend after a while and would just patiently persist. I've slowly raising my calories now to find the right balance for me - but I'm at 1500 NET and eating back all my exercise calories and maintaining fine (so more like 1800-1900 a day). I also look more at my weekly average than exactly my day to day totals.

Good luck! Don't try to go too low or you will get sick and feel tired. Just give it time. Maybe add some strength training (that's my next goal).

No, I don't want to lose at the moment. I was making a point about how many cals I would or wouldn't be able to either lose or maintain with.

Edited to delete snarky comment that would have just been reported anyway.

yep: make sure you eat more volume of food. add lots of vegies, see what you can do to cut your calories down in the foods you choose to eat like switching to only white breast chicken instead of dark meat. cut down your coffee calories by using splenda instead of suger and no cream or fat free cream at a reduced level. add in some real fruit instead of any processed fruit juices. preplan your meals to include some protein and vegies but cut out or try to reduce carbs that are in fact broken down to sugars and don't satisfy you. Add in some fiber with flax seed, oatmeal, and fruit and vegies... fiber keeps you feeling fuller longer. Now that is just some little nutrition advice on what to choose. Here is the how: try to make sure you eat at least every three hours or so.. then you wont feel so deprived for very long. Split your day into three small meals and on or two snacks. I aim for three to four hundded calorie meals and one hundred calorie snacks. You don't have to only eat 1200 calories as long as you add in some exercise. This will increase the amount you are allowed to eat and still lose. Exercise and weight lifting makes you hungry because your body needs fuel to function. Add in some protein after your workouts like an egg or can of tuna or greek yogurt.. All this helps me to not feel hungry. Hope I helped.
