Calories are indeed all that matter for weight loss.

For health and body composition, you want to pay attention to nutrients. Get enough protein and enough fat, eat a few servings of veggies every day, and forget about the rest.

This is pretty much spot on.
Get to the gym and do some resistance exercise 3 times per week. Continue to do your walking. When you get lighter and feel up to it add some running if you like. Get a good nights sleep for rest and recovery. Go to the doc once a year for a physical and a blood draw to make sure everything under the hood is all good...

    Best of luck!

Don't worry about the MFP sugar limit, it's way too low. Focus more on your macros (but increase protein and reduce carbs).

And have a donut. Just make sure it's a really good one (haven't found many worth the calories except at Whole Foods and Wegmans here!).

i really wont spend my calories on a donut. whats the point? i'd be hungry in 20 mins anyways.

Because I have already met my Macros and am still under calorie goal... and I want a donut.

    Donuts are awesome.

But then again, I don't eat a silly low number of calories to lose weight.

    Perfect answer!

OP: Here's the problem: When you ask a few million people what the right answer is, you're going to get page after page of "Here's what you need to do…" Everybody will tell you what worked for THEM and try to convince you it will work for YOU too. It may. Or it may not. Some people are able to eat a donut or 2 every so often and stay in their calorie range. Others try to avoid those foods altogether. Me? I try to avoid them. There are lots of people who would crucify me for that, while others would tell me my diet isn't healthy enough.

Then you'll get all the arguments about what "healthy" actually is. Paleo, IIFYM, vegetarian, GF, unprocessed, organic, garbage in garbage out, you name it. Everybody's got an opinion. Some will tell you pop tarts are the devil while others will tell you those people are evil diet zombies.

In short, there is no consensus. And most of the time, on this site, there's not even civility.

Your job now that you've asked, is to figure out what's best for you. Do you WANT to give up donuts? If so then for pete's sake give them up. Do you WANT to have donuts every so often? Then have them every so often, as long as you find a way to make them fit in your health goals. So figure out what you want to do, then go for it. In my opinion, MFP is better at being supportive once you have a plan than it is helping you figure out your plan. If that makes sense.

    Good luck.

I am new to the site and just saw someone say he ate 800 calories in donuts. That would be way too much sugar, right? I go over sugar if I eat a few pieces of fruit.

I see a lot of people claiming to eat ice cream and cake and pizza and I just don't see how they can lose weight this way.

Also a friend on my list sent me a message and told me to make sure I "set my macros" right? What is right?

Should I not use what MFP gave me?

I don't even track sugar and have lost a few pounds... I eat pizza, ice cream, waffles with syrup for breakfast, chocolate in the afternoon, along with a host of lean meats, veggies, fruits, and grains... Point is if you are in a caloric deficit, you will lose weight...... I track fiber in place of sugar and watch my 3 macros........ Best of Luck

^^This...I WAS diabetic and after using MFP (while ignoring the sugar macro) I've lost 42lbs and I'm no longer diabetic. I find I feel full longer on lean meats, fruits, and veggies, but I love me some ice cream, beer , and shortbread cookies...so I make it work when I have a craving..either by eating less other stuff or exercising more.

Honestly though if you want to eat "clean" do it..whatever works for you...just don't set yourself up to fail by denying yourself all the stuff you love..I'm lest worried about a classified carcinogen in my food as I am about the second hand smoke I'm exposed to every time I leave work through the employee entrance, or the HazMat response I worked last week..

Do you WANT to give up donuts?

This question is IMO the whole argument boiled down to it's core. It's not do you want to give up donuts... it is WHY do you want to give up donuts or WHY do you feel you NEED to give up donuts. Do you want to give up donuts because you BELIEVE they are bad for you? Do you feel you NEED to give up donuts because you BELIEVE they are bad for you?

Hey man just wanted to give you some advice.

Go here to calculate your macros http://iifym.com/iifym-calculator/

It's pretty simply and self explanatory. Once you get your macro numbers you can put them in on this site. It's what I did and has been workin pretty well for me.

As long as you stick to those numbers you should be golden. Keep in mind, it's very beneficially to have a great hardcore strength training program as well. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

PS I eat donuts almost everyday :)

I make a point to eat doughnuts at least once a month, sometimes as often as once a week. They are too awesome to avoid completely.

What kind of doughnuts make you hungry 20 minutes later? Maybe the kind in the package at the grocery store? If they are real yeast doughnuts that have been fried, then there is no reason they should make you hungry 20 minutes later. I usually get a cinnamon twist, and then a cake doughnut with chocolate icing that's been dipped in chopped nuts. Those two plus two cups of coffee will have me going until lunch.

Yeah, that's one of them. She posted a day or two ago that I'm a plant from the "industry" or something  She'll try to scare you about "toxins" and tell you processed food is bad and all sorts of other total nonsense.

She has her own group, and asks people to PM her, because whenever she posts her nonsense on the public boards it gets ripped apart. I strongly urge you not to listen to her.

You know it is one thing to post an opinion--but just leave it at that!

Processed food --depending on what it is-- does contain a substantial amount of additives that prolong shelf life and make it look pretty yet add nothing to the nutritional value. Some of those additives are carcinogenic. Some of those additives contribute to a number of chronic diseases. What is nonsense about that? ( And yes--this question is rhetorical.)

Which additives are carcinogenic and moreover in what quantity do they become dangerous? If you're going to make a sweeping statement with claims of carcinogens and diseases it's important to refer to dose and context. X amount of a given item could be very harmful whereas X/100 of that same item may be perfectly fine.

Nutrient density of the diet as a whole is important. However, you can't pin that down on singular food items without paying respect to the entire diet.
  • I agree with some of you that its ok to indulge in your favorite foods sometimes, but just because you can lose weight eating junk food doesn't mean you should! and just cause you're losing the weight doesn't mean you're healthy...and isn't that what we ultimately want? to be healthy and live longer more fulfilling lives? its just about creating small changes in your diet little by little that will ultimately create better habits for you. if you want more information please add me as a friend I'd love to talk more about this subject. I also have a biggest loser challenge going on right now on FB and everyone in the group is feeling so much healthier just from eating a little bit better! if you're interested in joining for support motivation, tips or anything just add me as a friend!

To the OP: chances are you just want to do what is going to work to help you get healthy. Part of that getting healthy is losing weight. Part of that getting healthy is developing eating habits that will feed your body so that you can do the things you enjoy without your body breaking down. The long and short of it is this: choose food wisely--fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, a variety of grains and dairy. good fresh water. Have a donut when you feel like it once in a while.

I would advocate avoiding soda, fast food, processed food ( high calorie, low nutrient trade off). I prefer to eat from the "clean 15 list" and purchase organic for the "dirty dozen" ( you can google it). I also prefer to buy my meat, eggs and dairy local--farm/grass raised ( also happens to be organic).

Macros can be a bit tricky when you are first starting out....but a good rule of thumb is to focus more on the carbs, protein and fat. I do agree with the PP that your protein could stand to be increased.

What is your exercise plan looking like?

Yeah but that lady doesn't "leave it at that" when you join her group. If you say something she doesn't like that doesn't exactly match her "teachings" she deletes it. That's not really "leaving it at that" now is it? I would like it if when I comment in her group even if it seems to contradict her statement and bears investigation by the reader that regarding my comment, she would just "leave it at that". But she doesn't.

]OK, I will google the dirty dozen and read it.

Do you have any information on the thing about cancer and disease?

I have started walking and that's about it...I put some music on the Ipod and made a commitment to walk a few times a week.

The best source of information that you can find is really reading the label of the food. Do recognize and ingredient? Look it up--and see why it's in your food. One great example are flour tortillas. I used to feed them to my children several times a week. Then I looked at the ingredients: Hydrogenated oils, softening agents, mold inhibitors, flavor enhancers. If you research each ingredient--you will be able to follow the trail as to what adverse effects these ingredients can have on your health. YOU are your own best advocate! Small changes lead to sustainable changes! ETA: to add...I am a lover of doughnuts and donuts myself. I also eat ice cream and pizza, and beer. I just choose carefully...and certainly watch portion and frequency. HTH!

And walking? It is the best exercise for starting out! I commend you on your commitment! Keep up the good work!

:noway: How DARE you try to demonize tortillas?! Blasphemy. I hope you don't get smoted. Tortillas are pretty sacred.

    HeIsBorn.jpg

By the way the "flavor enhancers" could be salt and spices, no? And the "mold inhibitor" kinda sounds like a good idea? I don't really like my tortillas with mold. Maybe that's just me.

I don't even track my sugar because I know I go over on it daily, but probably double the limit. I've not had a problem losing 50 pounds this way, nor has it caused a problem for me to maintain my loss for nearly two years now. Sugar is not the devil. Promise. Unless you are diabetic. Then it is. The devil.

That's when that 2nd 3rd and 4th donut come in handy.

They sell them by the dozen for a reason!

and its also why we have so many fingers!
