Crowded gyms in a few days

Every new year, the gyms fill up with people who make resolutions. They eventually get back to normal around March. But it REALLY ticks me off -- which sounds awful. But I feel like I go so regularly all year, every year, and then suddenly I have to wait in line to get on a treadmill. And the treadmill time is limited to 20 minutes. Anyone else find they have to wait in a friggin line to get on equipment at the gym? Crazy! They even have employees who come around and turn your machine off at exactly 20 minutes!

I just joined a gym last month. I haven't run into wait times yet. I'm hoping because i go around 630a that i won't run into that problem!!

I guess I'm lucky, almost all of the time I workout during non-peak hours, and even when I have to go at a busy time, I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for the squat rack, and never at all for any cardio equipment. Besides, all those people help pay for the sweet equipment upgrades I've enjoyed this past year.

20 minutes is not enough. my old gym gave 30 minutes - old gym. And it is too darn cold to run outside, plus dark by the time I get home and as a female I am not going out alone after dark. If the gym does get crowded I am lucky enough I can just go later but not everyone has that luxury.

My gym gets crazy around the first, too, but I'm lucky because the staff cater to us regulars. We're patient with the resolutioners, and even help them out. In turn, the staff treat us well, and try their hardest to accommodate us wherever they can. My gym rocks. :-)

My boyfriend was jsut telling me this a few days ago, about how the local YMCA FILLS up with people from Jan-March and using any of the weights/etc is kind of a hit or miss as far as timeframes go. He said almost Everyone who starts (which is awesome that they start! but still..) they usually stop going around march. :/

We use the gym for strength training..Cardio and other things i pretty much use my living room and my neighborhood...so not an issue here.

I have that as well, although this year they upped the 20 minute limit to 30 minutes, but I try to manage when I go to the gym and remember that once upon I was new as well (although not in January!). I find it more frustrating in the free weights area, but only because people don't know the protocols. For experienced folks, remember that we all have to learn sometimes and kindly providing information on racking your weights, working in with others, etc. could be viewed as an act of kindness.

I have been a gym rat for 7 years now and unfortunately it happens every year this time. Instead of being irritated for having my routine disturbed I try helping people out a little. Educate them correct gym behavior and when I see them I think to myself there am I except for....

Because truth is these are people like you and I trying to do the same. Unfortunately for many of them they will make an excuse and leave. I don't want my boorish behavior to be their excuse (an yes I was boorish the first two times this happened until a professional weightlifter I know took time to educate me).

If all you're going to the gym for is the treadmill then why don't you just start running outside?...problem solved. While I started down my path to better health and good livin' in Sept of 2012, I didn't start hitting the gym and weight room until January 2013...I'm still there. Yeah, a lot of people fall by the way side, but a lot of people also stick around and/or join different gyms, etc. Stop being a gym snob.

This is actually more motivation for what I've been trying to work on - diversifying my cardio routine. I've been exercising consistently for a little over 3 months, and have been doing the recumbent bikes (one ankle is permanently limited in it's range of motion, and I'm still having occasional pain from a really bad ankle sprain last week). I can handle the elliptical for about 20 minutes until my legs start hurting, so I think I may try out some of the other stuff to see. If I can break up my preferred 45min-1hour cardio routines between a few different pieces of equipment, that may help me avoid the "standing in line" that y'all are talking about. Thankfully, at my gym, there is such a huge strength training area that I have never had to wait for something to open up - I can move from machines to free weights to cables easily, as long as I'm flexible on what I'm doing (and since I don't have a specific program, per se, that's easy).

Edited to add: Also, if I were an outdoor runner, I really wouldn't be this winter. The current temp outside is 0 degrees fahrenheit. I'd be so bundled up in layers that, were I to fall down, at least my body would be well padded!

My aren't you supportive. No wonder people are scared and feel awkward going to a gym, trying to change their lifestyle.

My gym is 24 hours...so it's pretty easy to find a time when no one is there. I have found between the hours of 9p.m. and 10p.m. it's pretty barren. I would freak if I had a time limit, because I use the treadmill at least 45 mins each time! A 20 minute limit would drive me insane!

If you want to ***** and complain about it, think of it this way: How many membersips are purchased at this time, and how many are used throughout the year? If only the people who used the gym year-round were the only ones ever in there, how much higher do you think your gym membership would be? The 'resolutioners' probably account for more than 75% of the gym's profits.

I have a hard time believing it's that bad in Trenton OH with a population under 12,000. I would agree if you said Detroit or even Toledo.

All those people that go for a couple months are usually paying for membership well beyond that.
Think of it this way, if they weren't there, it's unlikely your gym would be able to stay open or offer what they do.

So really, they are doing you a favor for the remainder of the year. You should thank them instead.

I just joined a gym in December. I'm there 5x a week. It is typically pretty crowded. I'm dreading January. I want people to better themselves, but I'm kind of selfish. I want to be able to run 60 min on a treadmill. It is -17 below (with the windchill) in Nebraska. I refuse to run outside.
